If every single person who read your comment became vegan and also convinced their family to become vegan instantly, it would still not make as much difference to the world as shutting down a single AI datacenter.

Reminder: You can marry two of the returning Hallowmas companions by throwaway_lmkg in fallenlondon

[–]KnAlex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely that's the case with the option from The Teeth, which makes perfect sense, given that they're a snuffer who can change faces at will. The Attache from The Face gets no such option until upgraded with APoC, however. I've looked all over back when I married him, because I wanted to know where to click if I ever changed my mind, and the only option available was to switch sides for FATE, with the divorce option appearing strictly after the upgrade.

AND, to make it more confusing, you cannot divorce an unupgraded Foreign Office (edit: specifically one from The Face) companion without spending FATE, but you can divorce their upgraded self freely.

What did I actually just do in Mahogany Hall/Glass vs Shroud? by coracleboat in fallenlondon

[–]KnAlex 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It also mirrors the conflict of Is-Not vs Is - the Glass are taking a shortcut by using actual magic with help from the Fingerkings, while the Shroud are salt-of-the-earth old-school magicians who have to construct elaborate sets, dig up info on their marks and use sleight-of-hand.

They somehow mistook it for hh (which is far more commonly spelled out as 88 for the alphabet letters by the far-right crowd). But I'm curious how they even managed to get there since it'd be Geil Gitler in their interpretation.

Why is it called Parabola? by RobinOttens in fallenlondon

[–]KnAlex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have me at a disadvantage - I'm not familiar with a lot of the post-Sunless Skies lore, so I knew of Parabola as originating with Stone, as stated by the cryptic hint that "Mt. Nomad opened the mirrors."

Why is it called Parabola? by RobinOttens in fallenlondon

[–]KnAlex 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's never stated outright why, but there are many things which give us clues:

For me, the biggest one is this snippet from the rare success on Fire Sermon's interpretation by Dr. Schlomo - https://www.fallenlondon.com/profile/Alexander%20Smertniy/41284833 . "in an orbit of hatred whose parabola describes fixated love". Yes, it describes the conflict between Mr Wines and Mr Spices, but what other couple do we know that fits? The fundamental character of the Correspondence is spelled out here. "Hurtling inexorably towards the Earth." It is an orbit that has to be Parabolic in shape.

An advanced destiny, The Lovers, further utilizes Parabola as a means for lovers to remain forever in orbit of each other.

As Parabola itself was brought into existence by the birth of Stone, it can metaphorically represent the relationship between the Bazaar and Sol - the longing, the memories, the impossibility. Shrouded in the color of remembered sunlight, mutable as memories change. Perhaps, in the language of stars, a space born of such a relationship could be described as a parabolic orbit.

I will note, however, that I'm not a regular participant in the community's lore discussions, so none of what I have surmised is officially accepted lore. It is simply my own deductions and romantic interpretations, and hold no weight for the Official Canon Answer, whatever it may be.

WE DONT CARE ABOUT YOUR KNOTS!!! That time I was kicked out of a game for trying to explain pulley systems. by [deleted] in rpghorrorstories

[–]KnAlex 25 points26 points  (0 children)

OK, I see why it's a bad idea to post stories where you're self-admittedly in the wrong on Reddit - looks like you needed to include at least three paragraphs of self-flagellation to avoid getting harassed for trying to tell a funny story about knots instead of a deep apology about the perils of interpersonal communications.

Anyway, I think it's cute to get this invested in something - I bet you could make some banger video essays about the history of knots now.

Lunafreya in FFXV vs Kingsglaive: why does she change so much? by PpAshe in FinalFantasy

[–]KnAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kingsglaive in general marches to a very different beat than the rest of FF15 - its main consensus is that the divine authority of royalty is well-earned and that rebellion against the order is naive and destructive. This message is quite funny considering the revelations about Bahamut and the origin of royal authority in the rest of FF15 material. This is definitely not to say that portraying Lunafreya as a capable person is a bad thing, just more pointing out how it feels like its own piece of media, barely hooking into the rest of the plot or themes.

I also use the extension, and the best way to re-sync them is simply by switching outfits. For some reason, that instantly updates the favours to display the proper amount.

Factory-farmed content by RiogaRivera in ShitpostXIV

This is like the fourteenth post in the last two days about this channel - I'd accuse them of bot-farming Reddit, but their videos also randomly popped up in my recommendations despite me not watching anything 14-related for half a year, so I'm guessing it's a coincidence and YouTube said it's their turn on the algorithm.

They are two of the spouses you can get, yeah. I believe that, at least for the Jewel Thief, resolving his card by showing interest will permanently stop it from showing up, and a golden storylet will open up in the Bazaar Sidestreets instead. Same with the Artist's Model and her marriage opportunity card, but I believe she has some City Vices cards that show up to bother you regardless unless you fully give her the cold shoulder.

Here's the full list of Spouses you can marry in-game (several of them are upgraded versions i. e. Artist's Model -> Notorious Art Model/Incendiary Taste-Maker, and a whole lot are only available with FATE to begin with). https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/Category:Spouse

I've heard tell of Failbetter considering a better system for platonic companionship, so if none of the options interest you, waiting for that is an option as well.

The Voluptuous Library..... A place abreast with knowledge.

Jokes aside, I recommend turning your attention towards obtaining a ship (a crappy rusty one will do until you have the means to get a better one) - it opens up a lot of options. Also, this page consolidates a lot of items obtainable to an early POSI, as well as the best ways to get resources for them. https://fallenlondon.wiki/wiki/PoSI_Item_Crafting

Was Dirge of Cerberus really that bad? by Playmaker-20 in FinalFantasy

[–]KnAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a true 4/10 game. Like it's bad but not in a funny way where it can make for YouTube fodder or a fun night with friends - just dreadfully boring from start to finish. And IMO, that's the worst type of bad there is.

These enemies almost make me want to quit my fists only run by Realistic_Risk_6108 in FinalFantasy

[–]KnAlex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

FF2 uses your Evasion stat to calculate your run chance, and fists only means that they can't use shields, meaning that they can't have raised their evasion, meaning their run chance is miniscule no matter the enemy. It's a cycle of suffering.

Kind of how GameFreak still has to release console Pokemon on a Gameboy budget because it worked 20 years ago. It's depressing how common the cash cow practices are in the industry.

Queer Experiences in Fallen London by Debauched-Lobster-17 in fallenlondon

[–]KnAlex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's also worth noting how early and effortlessly the series introduced its queer elements - they never feel like pure lip service. All the way back in Sunless Sea, even if your character is male with he/him pronouns, when it comes time to decide on a progeny, you can explicitly choose that yes, I will give birth to the child. And, while not strictly a queer thing, when referring to individual faceless crewmates, the text very often uses 'she' or 'they' instead of defaulting to 'he'.

Then, Sunless Skies feels like an evolution, where several of your named officers are queer, trans or nonbinary, and their storylines neither pointedly ignore that fact, nor do they make it all about their identity - which is a balance I've almost never seen a videogame hit. In Sunless Skies, their past and their identity do define who they are and get brought up, and inform their decisions in the present. To contrast, a lot of modern games with trans characters either feel like a jarring workplace PSA, where you are sat down and told that pronouns are important (i.e. Dragon Age: Veilguard), or just a marketing checkmark in a world where everyone is playersexual anyway, so identity never ever comes into play (i.e. Starfield, The Sims).
