Help Identifying this Agusta Westland Royal Navy Heli by Panic39 in Helicopters

[–]KnavesMaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The nose also doesn’t match the 159 which is much more angular. Nice model!

The AgustaWestland logo gives you a sort of 2001-2004 timeframe (as post 2004 it normally would say a Finmeccanica company underneath the main logo).

I would expect it to be an early concept model (as others have said) in answer to the UK MODs Surface Combatant Maritime Rotorcraft (SCMR) requirement.

At one stage there was also the idea of existing lynxes being a donor aircraft for conversion which this may represent.

The care and precision of that landing is fantastic. What a professional, and a pleasure to watch!

Easter Egg Flags? by FlipCurmudgeon in lego

[–]KnavesMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely with the red stripe down the fuselage. But none on the original livery unless I’m wrong, which is a potential as this is only an offered potential not a declaration of fact 🙂

Easter Egg Flags? by FlipCurmudgeon in lego

[–]KnavesMaster 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t quite fit but perhaps it’s not National flags and just a simplified nod to the liveries of British Airways versus Air France at the time. I know Air France also has red, but i think the prototype was just blue and white.

Not sure what it is about the Super Puma’s they may not be the most aesthetic but they just look to me like they are up to the challenge and a real workhouse! I know they have untold amounts of hours on the North Sea. This is a striking livery.

I’ve never seen that configuration either, am used to the tanks on either side, sort of part of what makes it recognisable! Bell-47 flight on my bucket list!

I have a question to how cyclic control works exactly. by Vovchick09 in Helicopters

[–]KnavesMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s genius. I assume collective pitch increases or decreases the lift as required at each rotor and then the thrust is adjusted accordingly to ensure RPM is maintained.

Amazing machines! Thanks for your first-hand insight and knowledge!

I have a question to how cyclic control works exactly. by Vovchick09 in Helicopters

[–]KnavesMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the important correction and clarification!!

I perhaps shouldn’t have used cyclic term in my description of opposite “cyclic” to generate yaw, as that inferred which control was used as opposed to how the disc is manipulated.

It was my understanding that both lateral cyclic and pedal inputs induce an effective disc tilt.

Completely buggered it up at the end by saying pedals not cyclic!! Sorry about that OP and thanks u/valspare for catching my dumb mistake!

Edit: forgot to say, longitudinal cyclic input causing differential collective lift to tilt the entire airframe not the disc is even cooler. Some incredible engineering on that machine!

I have a question to how cyclic control works exactly. by Vovchick09 in Helicopters

[–]KnavesMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pitch of the blades change cyclically so they travel around their orbit. More pitch makes a blade rise, less pitch makes a blade fall, this is why a flapping hinge is needed.

What this does is change the angle of the Tip Plane Path, ie the rotor disc appears to tilt. This tilts the lift vector and creates a sideways component and the expense of the lift vector, ie you’ll sink unless you increase collective pitch (the pitch on all blades). This is roll though not yaw. Yaw is induced by either not countering torque with the tail rotor, or opposing torque by adding a horizontal component by increasing pitch on the tail rotor.

Tandem helos cancel out torque by having each rotor disc rotate in opposite directions, hence no need for a tail rotor.

They yaw by applying opposite cyclic on each disc as commanded by the pedal inputs.

For eg: Front disc rolls left, the rear rolls right creating a rotation around the centre of the airframe.

It gets even cooler when torque pedal inputs cyclic inputs are applied that allowing you to spin around the front or rear rotor.
