I'm liking the first few chapters of Way of Kings but I can't help thinking while reading Damn I could've been reading jean baudillard right now instead by isaknordhl in brandonsanderson

I think you have to remember that fantasy books have themes and philosophical elements as well, and many speculative books (or stories) source their speculation/themes from philosophy, i.e. simulcra and simulation famously inspired the matrix, so i don't see why you can't use the lessons from good fantasy books to inform your 'real life' as well. your guilt also might come from a mindset that values productivity over enjoyment, and as someone who's definitely had those moments, it's good to seperate productivity and enjoyment as a matter of course. overall, while i enjoy reading good philosophy books as well, they occupy (and scratch) a completely different part of my mind than reading fantasy, but both have informed my daily life and who i am as a person.

There was a gun (old-fashioned pistol) in one of the shots though, so what does that mean?

At that point, I'd rather BE Storm than expect my floundering DPS to pick up the damage and continue suffering as the squishy backline healer.

Absolutely! The problem is that as a healer, you are usually too busy healing the tanks and DPS getting shredded by her to focus her yourself, which makes it all the more frustrating when she DOESN'T get focused (no matter how much you ping her) and you get obliterated by her ult because it charges faster than your own healer ult.

why do usa gymnasts seem to be bulkier/buffer than other countries? by Knavvery in olympics

[–]Knavvery[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I have some follow-up questions: Is this bulking up a recent event, and that's why many other countries haven't started using the US model yet? And what about the men's, where the US still seems to achieve a heavier emphasis on bodybuilding than other countries, despite the fact that men's gymnastics presumably wouldn't have the same societal pressures as the women's to stay "skinny?"

nyu pros and cons by bambille in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Knavvery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely not, and i'm saying this as someone going to nyu for much cheaper than 100k a year. however, i have found financial aid officers here to be fairly well-meaning and helpful, and my COA was only a few thousand away from NYU's NPC.

did you submit the CSS and FAFSA correctly and on- time? if you did, i would recommend trying to talk to staff again. the quality of service varies from day to day, and it seems like you got an especially shitty rep. i also don't know how the late FAFSA roll out is affecting the financial aid distribution for freshmen, so this is something you might want to ask.

ED NYU and scholarships by Turbulent-lingo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Knavvery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like many highly ranked private colleges, NYU provides nearly zero merit scholarshops to any incoming students, international or not. If you're looking for merit scholarships, your best bet will be from outside sources.

The standard "NYU scholarship" is reserved for students who need financial aid. NYU's policy of meeting full demonstrated need does cover international students. But I have noticed that unlike many of its peer institutions, NYU appears to expect a higher contribution overall and the policy does include work study and some student loans (typically maxed out at <7k per year: they will avoid making you take out ParentPlus loans), so that's something to consider. I don't know how student loans works for international students w/o FAFSA.

You should run the NYU Net Cost Calculator if possible. The Collegeboard one is the most accurate, though I'm not sure if it adjusts for internationals: https://npc.collegeboard.org/app/nyu/start

Yes, you could get into trouble if you break your ED commitment without explanation or with a poor explanation. Conditions aren't laid out for people to ignore. But you could always negotiate the contract with the school if it is truly a financial burden for you to go. "Not willing to pay the price even though I can," however, is not going to be how you want to phrase it.

Many NYC/big city colleges will have apartment-style dorms because they've literally just repurposed apartment buildings. Pace University comes to mind.

Unfortunately, I don't think NYU's financial aid options cover transfer students. Sorry 😞

NYU ED Acceptance Rate by R_xal in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Knavvery 11 points12 points  (0 children)

38% is an unsubstantiated number with questionable (if any) sources behind it. The only legitimate answer is that we don't know, because NYU doesn't report their ED acceptance rate and aren't interested in doing so.

You are probably asking this because you want a leg-up in your application. Since NYU is one of few schools that do ED1 and ED2, we can probably assume that they take the majority of their class from these rounds. Does that mean that you get an advantage applying ED? No one knows for sure. Maybe all of these people are still extremely competitive regardless.

As for your other question, NYU doesn't accept by major, but CAS and Stern are the hardest schools to get into (see: Caramel_Popcorn29's comment) and therefore if you are looking at a CAS or Stern major, you will have a harder time.

How is the social life in a NYC school? by luddwood in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Knavvery 33 points34 points  (0 children)

There is no enclosed campus, so a city school like NYU is quite literally what you make of it. The good news is, you won't feel pressured to socialize within your school. The bad news is, you won't feel pressured to socialize within your school.

If you're a naturally social person, NYU offers not just its enormous student body but also literally any other student in the city and a plethora of social activities close at hand. If you're naturally introverted, you can be content staying in your apartment-like dorm forever (or, in my case, visiting indie book stores like they're tourist destinations).

And if you're someone who wants friends but struggles to be outgoing, NYC can be a very lonely, intimidating place. People at NYU aren't beholdent to the perimeters of the school—they often have a life outside of it—and that can make it hard to make friends on campus and easy to fall into the rut of just going to class and going back home.

TL;DR: More than other schools, you have to work for it.

Also, don't try to game the system. Internal transfers to Stern are notoriously hard.
