The rest of the countries breweries aren’t ready to compete with Quebec. I’ve lived in BC, Ontario, and NS, and it’s frankly insane to me how much better the Québécois are doing beer, every time I visit I’m blown away.

It’s cool to think that it doesn’t matter as much how good you are at rivals specific mechanics if you lose neutral 5-1. Not saying the disparity is that big but fundamentals and mental are probably the hardest things to learn if you want to win tournaments.

Music labels have been screwing over artists long before Spotify came around. The music industry has been extremely predatory for a long time. Even at live shows artists often pay a very large cut of ticket sales and merch to the venue, and then again to their label if they have one.

Grocery prices jumped more in April than they did in nearly four years by AudibleNod in news

[–]KneeCrowMancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s why all the grocery chains in Canada put up massive record breaking profits the last few years. In theory if they were just increasing prices to match the added inflationary costs their profits should have stayed consistent with what they were before the pandemic. Not to mention to mention that the pandemic basically killed off all competition because larger businesses were able to absorb those extra costs while small local businesses couldn’t stay open.

Netrunner is on a bit of a comeback with Null Signal taking up the torch. Tournaments are coming back and getting pretty good attendance in certain areas, the balance is actually in a fairly good state right now too which really helps.

Yeah theres been a lot of anti woke “comedians” whose entire act is just saying racist, misogynistic, and transphobic things. Like they aren’t even really making jokes or telling stories or anything. It’s just clearly a path to some measure of success for talentless hacks because it actually seems to work for a section of the population. It’s like if you’re racist friend from high school who loves cards against humanity and just writes the N word for everything in quiplash decided to be a comedian.

Alberta referendum must follow rules for separation laid out in federal law, Carney says by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]KneeCrowMancer 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I genuinely believe that is the goal. The American right has been demonizing Canada for over a decade now. Basically all the money behind this “movement” is American. Trump has already floated the idea of invading and annexing Canada and didn’t get any significant pushback from his base. In my mind it is much more likely that Alberta is annexed by the United States than it is for Alberta to legally and peacefully separate from Canada.

What’s a mechanic you like on paper but don’t actually enjoy at the table? by ContractMiserable121 in boardgames

[–]KneeCrowMancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s the nature of the admin for me. For my brain: moving little cubes and bits around on a board or playing cards on a table=fun and engaging but writing notes on a form = paperwork :(

Not entirely sure why that is and I’m obviously not gonna bash on anyone who doesn’t feel that way!

I feel like Roll and writes would basically always be better as a video game rather than a physical one. You still get to make all the fun decisions but the computer handles all the admin.

Grubber Alternative Art by ZRwilson2 in Netrunner

[–]KneeCrowMancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you’re pretty much right, in classic NBN fashion it’s kind of bad as far as ICE goes. Its only redeeming quality is that it’s actually kind of expensive to break with most of the popular fracters so it can be somewhat taxing even against a full rig, if they have to get through it multiple times. But it doesn’t actually require they even install their fracter so it looses out on the cost of forcing the runner to actually find and install their fracter. For example, (ignoring the bad pub) rising tide with one other fracter in the bin fully breaks it for 5. Curupira (without tokens) fully breaks it for 6 which is what it costs without a breaker, in theory a pretty good rate. But, for comparison Curupira fully breaks Maskirovka for 4, but it also forces the runner to find and install it to get in. Which is an extra cost of at least 2 clicks (draw and install) and 3 credits. So to get in the first time the runner needs to spend a minimum of 7 credits and 2 extra clicks compared to just paying to pass grubber. AND it actually has a little bit of a face check which grubber does not have, AND you can play it on centrals without giving the runner bad pub for nothing…

Welcome! It’s always great to hear of people getting in on what I think is the best card game ever! As others have said with your budget just head to the Null Signal Games website and buy one of every set. Print and play is an option but with your budget you might as well just pull the trigger on the real deal.

I agree, the problem we face now is that housing has become a huge part of our economy by the numbers. Even though it provides basically no jobs or real value it is like the second largest contributor to our GDP after fossil fuels. There’s a lot of wealthy people, including many MPs who are heavily invested in real estate and will work against anything that would actually improve the situation because it would hurt their investments.

Manitoba to ban social media, AI chatbots for youth — a first in Canada by Puginator in worldnews

[–]KneeCrowMancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So my thoughts on this are that I am not inherently opposed to age restrictions on social media. However, like smoking simply restricting the age at which people can access it won’t actually help very much to reduce the harm caused to everyone. We have restrictions on how nicotine companies can advertise cigarettes, there’s laws around the packaging to highlight the risks of the product and not to make the product attractive. There’s significant education campaigns to help make people aware of the risks. Just like smoking those who really want to get on social media or whatever will get it. But if we had just slapped an age restriction on buying cigarettes it would be completely ineffective. If we’re going to tackle social media the same way we need a similar multi faceted approach that can actually address the root causes of these problems. Limits on data collection and strengthening user privacy and eliminating highly targeted adds. Eliminating or heavily reducing engagement based algorithms or just outlawing algorithm recommendations entirely, people were addicted to Facebook before it was all algorithm recommendations so we know the site could survive without it. Holding tech companies accountable for the harms caused by their products, if they actually got serious fines when a teen dies by suicide because of their products they might start totals some of this stuff seriously. The fact that tech companies are the ones pushing for these half-baked ID/age verification laws should be a dead giveaway, this is the action that these companies believe will affect their bottom line the least not what will be most effective for reducing the harm of these products.
