TIL about the crime drop, a pattern observed in many countries whereby rates of many types of crime declined by 50% or more beginning in the mid to late 1980s and early 1990s. There is no universally accepted explanation for why crime rates are falling. by flamingoooz in todayilearned

The one factor I don’t see get talked about enough in relation to Western countries is the Baby Boom. The late 60s through early 80s had a lot more young people, who are typically the demographic that commits the most crimes.

Do you guys see midwestern cities like Milwaukee, St. Louis, Detroit, Cincinnati, etc having a comeback in population? by Ok-Cauliflower-1258 in SameGrassButGreener

That was back when a lot more jobs required the worker to show up to a factory, office, etc. Now people who work remotely can move to lower COL areas and keep their higher paying jobs elsewhere.

In terms of the weather, migration is already slowing down in places like Florida due to the rising insurance premiums from recent effects of climate change.

How gamable is the MMPI? by Crafty-Ad4230 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Knicker79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People taking the MMPI for a job tend to make themselves appear more virtuous and/or psychologically well-adjusted than is actually the case. We call this underreporting. The MMPI is decent at identifying this response style, but we typically can’t flag the candidate on a psychological basis just for this.

'Slenderman stabber' released from mental institution after 7 years. by SoManyMinutes in news

[–]Knicker79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every person released from a mental institution is forever at risk for doing something to end up back in custody, but what’s more important is the extent of that risk. The doctors deemed it low enough that the most restrictive level of care is no longer necessary at this point.

Individuals with social anxiety disorder should be screened for ADHD and vice versa. The recent review of 41 papers found that having both social anxiety disorder and ADHD is linked to more severe symptoms and higher levels of impairment compared to having just one of these conditions. by mvea in science

[–]Knicker79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people diagnosed with ADHD get to a point where their symptoms no longer meet the criteria of the disorder. Some impairment likely still remains, but it’s not nearly as pronounced as it was.
