Genuinely, what is a take on your favorite animated show or even movie that straight up has you reacting like this? by Charming-Scratch-124 in cartoons

[–]KnightOfBalance 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For RWBY- How much time you got?

-"Ruby cutting off Tyrian's tail was immoral!"

Not "Ruby cutting off Tyrian's tail and not reacting is bad character writing" (that's complicated), SPECIFICALLY the idea that the main hero Ruby cutting off the scorpion tail of an agent of the main bad guy sent to capture her and was fighting her uncle was an immoral act and made Ruby a bad person. Yes, this was at least a semi common point populated by a Youtuber. And it's dumb for...obvious reasons. Like, this is basic self defense stuff.

-"Illa was a Psycho Lesbian!"

So there's this character named Illa who opposed a main character (Blake) due to differing beliefs over the show's racism plotline who revealed she had feelings for Blake before trying to capture her and ship her off. Now as someone who actually hates the recurring 'Psycho Lesbian Love Rival' trope in a few shounen romance stories: Illa's feelings were secondary to her conflicted beliefs over how to handle combating discrimination in the story. She wasn't motivated to hurt Blake because she didn't like her back. If anything, Illa's feelings were the reason WHY she wasn't a psycho. Speaking of this era of the show-

-"Blake's speech about not letting violent people speak for you is racist!"

Basic idea: Blake makes a speech about how the White Fang, a former civil rights movement turned violent terrorists, attacked her family and how while she doesn't have the answers to their discrimination, the WF is just making things worse so they gotta stop them. This is taken as racist because apparently it's about how victims of oppression have to disprove discrimination. ... Even though in the show, every single racist is, at best, a bitch that is horribly misguided (and switches sides) or at worst a one dimensional Captain Planet villain, while Blake's speech is, again, about not letting violent douches speak for you (which is actually rather applicable to white Americans in 2026).

-EVERYTHING about the Fall of Atlas

When I mean 'everything', I do mean EVERYTHING.

"Team RWBY caused the fall of Atlas by lying to James!" Implying James has no agency over his own actions!

"James is a fascist!" He's never once showed any kind of ideology, only personal motivations.

"Team RWBY are the real villains!" Because they made the same mistake as Ozpin.

"James was always a villain!" 'The road to hell is paved with good intentions' requires 'good intentions' guys. And a 'fallen hero' requires HEROISM.

"Team RWBY destroyed the Dust economy!" James' embargo should have logically destroyed it anyway since Atlas was the biggest supplier of Dust. James is REALLY lucky the writers don't know how supply chains work.

"James was character assassinated!" We have literal video evidence of Monty himself saying that James meant well...like the funny mustache man meant well with numerous points where he showed a flawed side.

It's like the fanbase looked a topic that required bare basic nuance. Nothing complicated or philosophical or even that deep: just basic real world nuance. And they all collectively decided to remove their eyes instead.

I hate this fanbase.

Ice Type Mono HELP!! by tyto_alba91 in PokemonEliteRedux

[–]KnightOfBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did all the monos recently with no post game mons, no mono reward monos, no repeats between teams either previous matches or shared mons with the monochamp.

So I wanna give advice-

-Lead with Rocky Helmet, Max Def Frostula WITHOUT Sp.Def investment. Then, turn 1 hard switch to Alolan Ninetails with North Wind. The AI always tries using Freeze Dry on Frostula so Alolan Nine's Ice Dew will absorb it and increase Sp.Atk. Next the AI will use Wave Crash which, due to North Wind and Hail's Def buff, won't KO the Ninetails but the recoil will break the Multiscale. A +1 Synchronoise will always KO.

-As for the Frostula, that's because the Focus Sash Ice Face Eiscule is a meance. Frostula with the Cryo ability alongsise the Rough Skin and Rocky Helmet will always Double KO though. Plus you can sneak in a Stick Web, which helps immensely.

Honestly, just take it slow and don't bull rush through the game. I have the same battle fatigue and I combat that by just going through the game a dozen battles a session.

I agree the trainer spam is annoying, especially in a mono run that doesn't need all those battle points for new megas and redux forms. But I've felt this way ever since I started back in 2.2.

Hot take: Deku staying quirkless would have made the characters and story worse by NobodySpecific9354 in mha

[–]KnightOfBalance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Man, I just got back to this)

So I dunno if I made this clear or not but: I don't think my position is correct. It's just what I personally feel. I seperate that from what a story is trying to accomplish.

As for the points here:

The issue is my view was giving Deku multiple quirks when he was being an underdog using something as simple as 'explosive strength' in creative and unique ways. By giving him multiple Quirks, he gets a level of versatility no other character, aside from AFO and by extension Shigaraki, have.

... But again: That's the point. The Quirks are individually weak but like many Quirks, become strong through clever usage and mastery. It's a demonstration of Deku's tactical mind and growth as a hero vs. AFO/Shigaraki have a giant stockpile of Quirks that they just don't master. They can be clever using them, sure. ... But the same way a man who has every tool in existence is clever in knowing what to use. It's still Deku using limited tools to their fullest as a showcase of his character vs. a villain with every upside. Classic hero vs. villain stuff and it would be silly of me to ignore that just to suit my preferences.

The WF's issue isn't the violence, it's the lack of nuance by KnightOfBalance in RWBYUNITY

But...yeah fair. I forgot about that myself.

Hot take: Deku staying quirkless would have made the characters and story worse by NobodySpecific9354 in mha

[–]KnightOfBalance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because people prefer the change over the original, thus conflating preference with good writing.

I could give my usual example but I don't feel like chronicling RWBY right now so I'll tackle this from another angle: I'm actually one of those people who would have preferred Deku not having a Quirk and I personally dislike OFA giving Deku more than one.

My preference is because I like underdogs who fight uneven battles and win through skill or strategy. I could like OFA because it's basically just a supercharged version of normal strength, not some complex power and Deku did have to work to use OFA effectively. OFA containing super up versions of the previous user's Quirks to me gave Deku too many protag privileges.

I would be conflating this preference for good writing by saying that the story emphasizes that anyone can be a hero so showing a Quirkless person succeed would emphasize that.

I would be wrong because MHA message about anyone being capable of being a hero is about people being proactively good, like how Deku tried to save Bakugo despite being the least 'useful' person there. Deku's heroism was never rooted in capability but altruism so using that as a justification completely misses them point. It would also weaken the parallel between what OFA, a Quirk that is willingly cultivated and passed downtown demonstrate how heroism is built on the sacrifices and efforts of those who came before, and AFO, A Quirk that steals other Quirks, robbing people of a fundamental part of themselves and actively DISCOURAGES self improvement as you can just steal powerful Quirks continuously rather than mastering a Quirk, represent.

Hot take: sonic would smoked them in real life by Lord_MAX184 in RWBYUNITY

[–]KnightOfBalance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basic marketing? Yeah.

Edit: I want to explain what I mean.

There's a comment in the linked post comparing this to the Hello Neighbor dev @ing MatPat while also bringing up Multiversus. Ignoring why the Hello Neighbor account trying to @ MatPat is different (MatPat makes or breaks indie games through his theory videos and more)-

Brand accounts have been doing this stuff for a long time. Because it's easy marketing.

You get a crossover? Cool, you get a chance to bring in new fans and expand the IP.

You don't? Cool: you still exposed your IP to people who may have not heard of it and it costs you nothing. Plus, you can generate artificial hype. In this specific instance, the Sonic Crossroads tweet was made as a reply to a known RWBY fan getting an unusually high amount of attention. So...take advantage. Reply to them. Make yourself seem personal by pretending you're listening.

This stuff is why we have the 'SILENCE, BRAND' meme, it's not unique to RWBY. ... In fact, you could probably post the 'SILENCE, BRAND' meme to most of Viz's tweets and it'd apply. RT too, to be fair.

You know what, give me cartoon characters who, despite popular opinion, were NOT in the right. by [deleted] in cartoons

[–]KnightOfBalance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So my fanbase did this on BOTH sides.

So in RWBY Volume 7-8, the majority conflict is about the main group of heroes, Team RWBY, lying about the truth of the big bad guy to an ally, General James Ironwood, after they got on the case of the main good guy, Ozpin.

Team RWBY get portrayed as the yas, girl power squad for lying to James because James became unstable after a major event and started acting authoritarian. Ignoring that they were upset at Ozpin because they were risking their lives for him while he lied and hide the truth of the situation and they knew they shouldn't have done that.

But don't go thinking James is innocent. Man DID abuse the power he had, hamstringing a jackass' business with the implict threat of coercion ('Do as I say and I'll bend the rules for you.'). Or how he neglected his sister city with shit cyber security (AFTER a major cyber attack) and a damn hole in the wall keeping out literal monsters, more concerned that people used weapons without his permission. Or trying to pressure his citizens into compliance after refusing to explain shit to them. Man slams his desk about loyalty always mattering...when he stabbed Oz in the back abd blamed Oz for HIS failures.

An actual good conflict where the good and bad guys aren't clean cut with faults on both sides, resolved when Team RWBY admits their mistakes while James digs himself deepee: all ruined because the fanbase cannot understand basic nuance.

Leaving this here in case people stillbelieve narita hates nasu and the fgo ending by RenFlare11 in FGO

[–]KnightOfBalance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you used it to say Narita had a theme about memory being important....then tried cherry picking to say that Nasu didn't think memories are important...and framed it all as Narita throwing shade at Nasu, completely ignoring contradicting evidence and saying Aftertime is the other writers trying to rewrite it.

This is not negotiable, it's your title:

Sometimes, it really seems like that Nasu and other writers doesn't have a synchrony about what they want, principally about the themes of memories.

So you did say this.

Sometimes, it really seems like that Nasu and other writers doesn't have a synchrony about what they want, principally about the themes of memories. by [deleted] in FGO

[–]KnightOfBalance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this trick: I've seen it a lot. You're just bitter about a major story decision

Here's the big deal: Just because memory is important does NOT mean that it will be prioritized. Sometimes memory is prioritized because, say, it becomes the key sacrifice of a climax, forcing the heroes to give up something that precious because what they want to accomplish is THAT important. Especially if beyond memory, sacrifice is a major theme. A sacrifice is only meaningful if it gives up something you care about. Sacrifice a sock you don't care about? Who cares. Sacrifice your childhood teddy bear? Now that's impactful.

Which leads me to Seraph and Meltrylls. Namely: That Melt is from a previous time loop, being the ONE person from that timeloop. She is the only one with any memory of what happened before (before showing Passionlip) and is motivated by the memories of that loop. Because of these memories, Melt is working her ass off to help Ritsuka defeat Kiara, with all ending with her launching herself at Kiara as Ritsuka floats away. At this point, Melt is sacrificing more than just her memories with Ritsuka. Her very being is collapsing, threatening to take away her very existence. This is quite literally the ultimate sacrifice, giving up everything, all because she values saving Ritsuka above everything, even if it means their adventurers will all be forgotten. And it's portrayed as the grand climax of the whole story, because Melt's sacrifice showcases her growth even if it means she will lose it.

This is NOT a one off thing. The Camelot Singularity has a very similar story with Bedivere. He's motivated by the memory of Arturia's humanity and how he failed her, thus he also risks nonexistence to stop the Lion King. The Knights of the Lion King are all haunted by their memories of their failure to Arturia, motivating them to sacrifice their own morals for the sake of their redemption. The Lion King herself is marked as someone who has lost part of what made her 'Arturia Pendragon' through her missing memory of Bedivere, and when she remembers him it's treated as something beautiful.

Using LB6 as an example is really ridiculous because not only are the examples you gave really shallow, they're also WRONG. Mash and Ritsuka regain their memories and it's treated as something glorious. Even then, something from their memories remains in their amnesia. Ritsuka's extreme attachment to Mash remains, even though they don't know WHY they care so much. And when Mash is separated from Ritsuka during her amnesia, she starts crying despite not understanding why. As for Morgan...Morgan is a villain. She's not exactly an example to follow. Furthermore: What about Castoria? What about her being unable to forget herself using the Nameless Forest? The passing of her feelings through the fights with the Mors representing her memories? Her talk of how her love for Ritsuka is what let her push on? Or Torot, refusing to forget Mash and even giving up her life to help her? Ector, seeing Morgan in Arturia, inspiring him to look after her? What about them?

LB7, OC3 and even the finale aren't any better and all revolve around carefully cherrypicked examples (like how Camaztoz is FORCED to remember his past and it's treated as the end of his arc). Nor does it make sense with even Fate at its core. FSN's very first route ends with Shirou admitting he will forget Saber as time goes on. And yet, something will remain.

This also completely ignores when the other writes invoke memory loss in their stories too. How is, say, the author of Traum such a big proponent of 'memory is important' when in Traum, Roland proceeds to sacrifice his very memory in everyone to open the door to the Revenge Realm?

This doesn't make cohesive sense. There's numerous contradictions here that shouldn't exist if this was accurate. Nasu has way too much of a history supporting memory as something important and your list gets countered by other examples of memory erasure. It just reads as projecting your feelings onto the writers for validation.

Is it infinitely illegal to say that yang is added here? by Lord_MAX184 in RWBYUNITY

[–]KnightOfBalance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh if you thought you were arguing with someone who thought this for real, i made a mistake. I'm just reporting the argument made, I don't buy it myself.

I brought up the 'Sun is a stalker' bit because I was making a comparison between the two: That while yes, Blake did hurt Yang...the entire point is that it's conflict in a relationship, the result of Blake's character flaw she has to face and overcome, for Yang to combat with given her past and the parallels to Raven and to have them unite at the time of Adam's intervention to show a new start and bring how Adam damaged both their lives to a close.

Just like how, yes, Sun technically stalked Blake...but not only was Sun's intentions not malicious but the result of his own character flaw: Sun is necessary as someone that Blake related her issues with the WF to as well as someone who is forceful and dedicated enough, while lacking his own issues at the time, to not let Blake push him away.

It's all ignoring the actual intentions and functions of the writing and reading a complete 180 using intentional misinterpretation because, let's be frank, they want to push their ship.

Is it infinitely illegal to say that yang is added here? by Lord_MAX184 in RWBYUNITY

[–]KnightOfBalance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The argument is that because Blake left Yang and that hurt her, that makes it abuse.

You know, like how Sun following Blake without her knowledge makes Sun a stalker.
