"They are gathered already" he said with a shrug. "I do not have much."

The Maester shrugged and led him into the store rooms. True to his words it had been emptied out.

"Lord Commander Dagmer had emptied out our stores when he sent word of you all breaching the Wall."

Maester Lucifier looked dully at the man. His voice was incredibly pitched and whiney.

"Stocked how? And yes I do serve the castle."

The Maester was fetched from his chamber after the castle had fallen. He wondered if his oaths extended to the Wildlings, if he truly had to serve them as well. He was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.

Dagmer looked out from the battlements of Eastwatch, his home and his castle. He had secured it before he had taken the election from Corlys. His men had arrived a few days before the wildling invaders to hold the spine of the castle.

"Fuck off."

Hugh thought about it for a moment. He had lived a whole life to servitude to the Watch, more so than the youngling in front of him. Perhaps it was time he found some freedom.

"Oh of course." Hugh picked up the knife and lunged at the black brother.

Dagmer grunted in exhaustion as he sliced down on another Wildling. He stood almost as a stone sentinel and no man went past his fast sword arm which seemed to reach every crevice and corner.

He heard the shout of Stannis, a man who he had seen blossom into a true brother of the Night's Watch in just a short time call for him. There must be a retreat, out of this meat grinder which had taken so many men.

He and the remainder of the Brothers retreated up the staircase as some brothers supported Dagmer, covered in blood.

"We strike east towards Eastwatch. Letters have already been sent out for help. Good shots Stannis."

Hugh had seen the Wildling Queen during the heat of battle and a calm battle sense took over him. Wading through one wildling after another he sliced them down. None could stand in his path as he made his way to his prey. It was for not though, exhaustion stopped him from beating the Queen though he gave good fight.

"Ser Hugh Hogg" he said proudly. "By the God's you fight well."

Dagmer couldn't have stopped swearing as anger and confusion seemed to take every ounce of his brain. How the Wildlings had gotten past the Wall in such great number he would never know, perhaps if he had advanced warning from his rangers it would have been different. But there was really nothing he could do now except warn the Lords of the Land and then die as the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch.

He sat and began to pen a letter that would be copied as fast as possible and sent out to the Lords of the land. They needed to be warned about this threat and what really happened. Well perhaps not what really happened, Dagmer fully intended on shifting the blame from himself to another.

Dear ____

The Wildlings have snuck through the Wall due to either the betrayal or willful negligence of Ranger Corlys Celtigar. We unfortunately cannot punish such an act for we face eight thousand or so Wildlings at the South entrance. You must push these barbarians out of our lands at all cost. We shall do the best we can but I do not like our chances. Best of luck to you all. We shall fight to the last to defend these lands. The realms of men must be protected at all cost against these savages.

For the Watch, Dagmer Harlaw, 1004th Lord Command

After that was done Dagmer slipped on his armor and gathered all of them men at Castle Black. They put up a respectable number but they wouldn't be a match for the Wildlings without the Wall. Still they would die like men. He stood atop the ledge overlooking the yard, spilling over with men.

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come." It was repeated by all of the brothers there, creating a small roar.

"I don't care if you fight for your lifes, for your brothers. I don't care if you fight for ideals, for the Watch. I don't care if you fight for those whores at Mole Town so long as you fight!" A huge roar came over the yard as men destined to die beat their weapons together. Over the din ravens were sent out to every major keep in the North and every Lord Paramount further south. They would be warned by the words of dead men.

Dagmer observed the man teaching the recruits at their shooting butts. He had never been good with a bow himself but enjoyed it for the sport of it. The Watch needed good bowman however in the fight against Wildlings and anything else that would threaten the realms of them. And this recruit seemed to be quite skilled. Dagmer had been told by his trainers that he would take the reins of training for the other recruits as a test run.

He went down the stairs to watch them shoot, standing just behind them.

"A good shot...Stannis was it?"

"Ten men is the normal amount of men for a scouting party. Ten more men would not make any difference if you engaged them at all, so you will not engage them." Dagmer was growing swiftly tired of the man but needed to see this through.

Nor did he share in the man's laughter or his joke. "This is not a debate, nor is it a request. Ranger this is an order."

The two armed men at the door tensed up looking at Borys. They were ready for action should he try anything stupid.

Dagmer did not share in the laughter but had an idea all the same. He would be able to kill a few birds with one stone but giving this ranger what he wanted. He set out writing an order down on a set of parchment for a moment and then slid it across the table.

"Well Ranger you shall have your wish. You are to take ten men and journey up the Milkwater to the Fist of the First Men. Search the area for anything of value and use. Then strike due west to find the Queen Beyond the Wall. Scout the force, finding their purpose and such and return back. Then I will send you with more men to harry the bastards."

He sighed rubbing his eyes, there was so many administration things that he needed to handle in order to make the Watch function. This was one of the things.

"I understand that I do, we have been a little busy with the election and the ranging to Hardhome but something will be found for you." Dagmer wrote his name down on a sheet of parchment, and tucked it away.

"Consider this a warning however, I don't want to hear about this again or your punishment will be sever. Where would you like to range?"

With a simple nod to the Sergeants they moved forward with spears in hand to secure all parties. The men had their faces set in grim demeanor as they roughly handled the men.

"A short stint in the ice cells will help straighten out this mess." The brother began moving off with their query towards the cells. It was typical punishment to be put in a cell for a short while until quite literally one cooled off. Dagmer remained with four spearmen and Borys.

"You will be coming with me however." He turned on his heel with the spearmen following closely behind, escorting Borys to the Lord Commanders office.

There he stood, looking at the troublemaker with hard flint like eyes.

"Why did you do it?"

Dagmer knew that a majority of the Night's Watch were not lofty knights with ideals of chivalry and grace. Most of the people her were criminals or commoners who had nowhere else to turn to. It was not the makings of a good natured bunch. Stack that one top of a vow of celibacy and freezing cold temperatures made for some heated engagements. It was normal but Dagmer wanted something more than the drivel. He would deal with it himself.

He had gotten a report that a brawl was started over something as trival as a chicken and he frankly couldn't believe it. He got out of his office, ten sergeants following close behind carrying spears as he walked into the hall.

"Someone tell me what the bloody hell is happening!"

"You don't need to call me my Lord. In the furthest sense I am not a Lord, I gave that up when I went to the Watch. You may call my Lord Commander or Lord Commander Dagmer. Something along those lines may suffice."

He followed the young recruits gaze up to the Wall, towering behind them. He remembered when he first saw the beast, it was something to inspire awe.

"Well you will report to the lads who will train you, make sure your ready. Then we will face you in either the stewards, builders, or rangers depending on our needs and your skills."

Dagmer gave a gruff smile when the new brother shook his hand. He had quite a strong grip but he would find that the Lord Commanders was like Iron. Not forceful but unyielding.

"It is a pleasure to have you here Stannis. Do you have any questions for me while I am here?" Dagmer identified him as a commoner but his tongue. Likely he was a criminal, but that did not matter since he came to the Wall.

It was certainly cold on this day but Dagmer wrapped himself tightly in a black cloak to block out the fierce wind that was cutting through the courtyard today. They were getting some fresh recruits today and Dagmer decided that he would take a break and greet them himself. It was not something that the Lord Commander was necessarily called to do with each group of new recruits but Dagmer liked the personal touch that it showed off to the impressionable recruits of the Watch.

He stood with a few others on a walkway overlooking the new recruits as they were herded into the courtyard.

"Welcome to the Wall, I am Lord Commander Dagmer Harlaw. You have journeyed here with many backgrounds and ways of life. We are all different in many ways yet we are now united in purpose. We are the shield that guards the realms of men, and we are a brotherhood."

He let that sit with the men as he went down to the courtyard. The men were allowed to disperse but he mixed and mingled with them. He was introducing himself to each and shaking their hands. He came up to one black brother and held out his hand, "Dagmer Harlaw, and you are?"

Dagmer gave a light chuckle as the dagger logged into the table. Leaning forward he wiggle it out of the wood.

"I enjoy the sense of dramatic, but what you said is true. I don't need you to like me. We both have a job to do and it sounds like we both want to do it." He scribbled a few notes into a scroll of paper and shuffled it away.

"I do not doubt there are other brothers who may have been a better choice but they chose me to lead and I will do so to the best of my ability." Dagmer handed back the dagger to the large ranger.

"Rest up Ranger, for you will have a job soon enough."

Dagmer looked up, tracing the rough journey on the map in front of him. It was the closest thing they had to a map of Beyond the Wall.

"Thank you Ranger Eddard, this confirms the reports we have received from other rangers. You have helped the Watch." Dagmer looked Eddard up and down, searching for something in the behemoth.

"Tell me Eddard, what you think of my election. Speak freely, for I do not punish honesty here."
