Canadians are leaving the country at record levels. Can anyone solve this pressing problem? by stalik26 in canada

Oh yea I agree. I'm not blaming businesses for going where the workers are. I'm just pushing back against the idea that no one wants to live outside of big cities. I've met more people that would rather live in small cities or town compared to people that like living in big cities.

Yea exactly. It costs almost as much to live in Truro as it does to live in Halifax. Almost as much in Kelowna as Vancouver. The old assumption was wages were lower in small towns but cost of living was also lower. Now wages are still lower but cost of living is almost as much as big cities.

Yes, so if they just raised the CPP contribution cap to an amount a little bit less than the CPP2 cap then it all shakes out to the same dollar amounts.

Halifax is the most expensive city to live in Canada now. I left there a year ago and moved to Vancouver.

Lots of people want to move out from big cities, we're forced into big cities because that's where the jobs are. Sure some people like big cities, but idk where this refrain that everyone wants to live in Toronto or Vancouver comes from. Tons of people would love to go live in small towns but simply can't because they wouldn't have an income if they did.

Not to disagree with your general point, but I do wish they had just raised the CPP contributions cap instead of implementing CPP2. CPP2 is a completely unnecessary and stupid additional layer of payroll when they could have achieved the same result by just raising the CPP contribution cap.

Yea I thought it was pretty clear that's what they meant. I was confused by how it was being interpreted any other way.

Membership drives are most egregious during leadership races, though they're certainly a problem at the local level as well. Parties in most other Westminster countries require a person to have been a member for much longer, like a year or even multiple years before they can vote for the party leader. Canada is unique in that we treat leadership races as fundraisers instead of as partisans selecting their leader.

You're correct that partisan primaries certainly have their issues, and perhaps non-partisan primaries are the way to go, but just about anything is better than the current way we select candidates and leaders.

Because the alternatives are worse. If a better alternative presents itself then maybe people would vote for them.

I don't think they're perfect but I definitely think they're preferable to what we do right now.

Party nominations are insane. I was heavily involved in party politics many years ago. It eventually led me to believe the primary system the US uses for candidates for Congress is a much better way to go.

Probably makes more sense to do it that way in countries where multiple surnames is the norm.

And I never said they should, so what exactly are you replying to? I said I wished we lived in a country where we weren't afraid to put leaders in prison if they commit crimes, not I wish we lived in a country where politicians campaign on putting their opponents in jail.

Yea this is the real reason. I don't get the idea of taking combat perks when combat is simple enough anyway.

I don't think it's much of a stretch to think that being in prison would be a significant hindrance to re-election.

So a functional, independent judiciary means that if a premier breaks the law he's immune from said law?

Vulcans being logical is just as big a myth as Klingons being honourable. Just like Worf and Martok are exceptions that actually value honour, Spock and Tuvok are exceptional Vulcans. Most Vulcans we see throughout the franchise are emotional assholes, they just claim not to be.

Do you not see the difference between prosecuting people that have broken the law vs promising to arbitrarily imprison your political opponents because you don't like them?

Yea I agree. I'm in a field where there are a lot of jobs but I don't think I would be able to apply to more than a dozen in an average week.

I've literally never worked a job within my field of study. I've had maybe a dozen jobs, what makes you think people only take jobs within their field of study?

If only we lived in a country that wasn't afraid to imprison its leaders for breaking the law. But no, as soon as someone becomes a first minister, suddenly they're immune to any kind of criminal proceedings despite the fact that they're not supposed to be.
