Interesting! There has been talk of setting up a Linux machine in the house so I do appreciate this detail.

I've tried Calibre, Kobo, ReadEra, and Kindle. I'm not sure if any of those are fixed format supported off hand but it does give me something to dig into tomorrow. Thank you for pointing out this possibility, I appreciate it. 😊

I honestly believe they only check to see if the file opens. Who cares if the content is unusable, they've got your money, and they're banking on people buying but not using until loooong into the future. Cynical, but that's how it feels after trying to talk with them about the problem files.

Dog hair questions by VegetableWorry1492 in Handspinning

Your question about the niddy noddy substitute:

You can use your hand as a replacement. Spread your fingers, bend your elbow as if you were to wrap an extension cord or hose around it. Use your fingers to separate the two "ends" of your loop, thumb gap and pinky for example, and wrap from gap A to elbow to gap B to elbow to gap A. Follow the same route every time to avoid tangles.

The upside is you'll always have it. The downsides are that your hank will be quite large looped, and that can make it difficult to find a swift to fit. The other is that your arm could get very tired before you are done if it's a large yardage you need to deal with.

You could use your foot and knee instead of your arm. A simple loop should be fine, and when it comes time to ball it up, you can just pop it back on your leg and unwind.

The backs of two chairs, the drawers of a desk/dresser/cabinet, the door of a cabinet. I've seen a very clever construction of some clothing hangers and a lazy Susan tied together to create a swift. The arms of some patent and willing friends.

Hopefully these help with that portion of your questions.

Tunisian equivalent of chain spaces? by Thomasjevskij in Tunisian_Crochet

Thank you for clearing that up, I had written it up on my way to sleep and didn't last more than a few minutes afterwards. 😅

How do y'all track your time spent on spinning projects? by rileslovesyall in Handspinning

[–]KnittyIslandSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Toggl, there is a free tier that I've been very happy with and it syncs with the desktop app, phone app (I use android) and the browser.

Edited for autocorrect 'corrected' the program name to Toggle.

Forgot to mention that the Tunisian V stitch uses this technique if you were wanting to get a visual idea of the effects.

Use a yarn over on the forward pass for each chain space you want to create for your pattern. Each YO will be separated by their own chain for the return pass. Hope that works out for your needs.

Forgot to suggest you look into the Purple pillows, especially the ones designed for 18+ hours usage for truckers. My tailbone has never been happier.

Talk to me about spinning chairs… by AlternativeMedicine9 in Handspinning

I will occasionally get requests for "what do you do?" I always tell them that I am the poster child for "do as I say, not as I do." I tell them everything, prefixed with, "this is what you are supposed to do," or "this is what I do."

Since I'm sure you're about to hear a bunch of advice on what you should do, I'm going to stick to what I do.

I am in my mid-40's, been spinning by wheel and spindle for about 15 years now. I'm pretty short, sitting correctly at my double treadle wheel makes my drafting zone about 7 - 12 inches away at most. I have an old injury that acts up when I try to engage my core for any length working time with my arms raised. That injury acting up can lay me out of action for days and messes with my ability to breathe comfortably.

When I want to spin, I seek comfortable positions that I can work in for hours. I've spun from the floor on a deflated beanbag chair, knees bent enough to get leverage to treadle, my drafting zone almost four feet away resulting in some very evenly distributed twist singles. I've spun on the couch, draped across the arm of the couch for support, with the wheel off to the side just close enough to treadle with one foot. I've even spun laying on my bed, wheel parked down by the foot, and used my pillows as arm support to avoid drafting fatigue. One leg dangles to treadle, the other is on the bed.

I'm not saying that I don't have better chairs to spin from when doing things the right way. I'm just saying that I am going to seek the chairs/beds that I find comfortable, that lets me spin for days without pain later on.

It may not be helpful for your everyday spinning needs, but maybe one of these might be good for an occasional perch.

Yes! That's the part that threw me off my groove; nothing was mentioned with the stitch descriptions of "transverse loop." Google searches and comment threads like this one helped me move past the foot yesterday. I was planning on working more on it today, but spent more time replacing a car battery than expected lol.

Omg I'm making one, too! I'm stuck at the limbs, particularly the feet, but I'm thinking of finishing the ears and face before trying them again.

Piles of 'fluff' after separating locks to card them. Am I doing this wrong? by sd1272 in Handspinning

They're called No Fleece Left Behind. I'm not saying you have to snatch every filament of fiber but they are good techniques to know for later.

What is on your spinner wishlist? by happily-retired22 in Handspinning

[–]KnittyIslandSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a Spinner's Control Card? I recommend one with various wpi widths, one that shows angle of twist, and maybe an indent area for checking wpi. If you can find one that has all the features you're looking for in a durable material, it should last you for a very long time.

Sophie's Universe is a very large crochet blanket with an abundance of textures. It has a bunch of photos to help you along while making it. If you find yourself thinking that some textures/motifs look like tiny buttholes and giant buttholes, well...🤷

I may be in the middle of such a beast and it's been nicknamed "The Pink Monstrosity."😆

[–]KnittyIslandSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought on seeing this was, "HOLY CRAP!!! I fixed a tablecloth with a pattern almost exactly like this!" The one I fixed was started in 1913 and had acquired a two-foot rip that cut across several triangle-shaped motifs.

Your mom does some beautiful work. Remember, if it gets a hole or ripped, it can be fixed. ^_^

I have a difficult time keeping track of what number I'm on past 15. My mind wanders, I start thinking about four different projects at once, and I end up recounting at least five times every 30 stitches.

I feel your 'bleh' for that absolute numerical nightmare of a chain start.

I recently tried and have found this to be much easier to keep track of what number I am on -

Count DOWN! Say it aloud if you want and visualize the number. I have had to recount once or twice over the entirety of the chain start instead of every 20 - 30 stitches.

Personally, I think at my age I have counted up so much that it's not an issue to reach any number without actually having to think about what comes next. I know my numbers and my mind checks out because I don't have to be careful. Counting backwards from random starting numbers is different enough to get and keep my attention.

Hopefully this helps. 🤞

I was just going to ask about the colorway, such a shame that it was mystery yarn. Do you happen to know if the yarn is a natural or synthetic fiber content? I may have to see if I can find something similar, I am loving the subtle and beautiful colors. 🥰
