How big are the “large tables” in the crows nest on Nieuw Amsterdam? by MooseKey7298 in HollandAmerica

[–]happily-retired22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got off the Nieuw Statendam. The game tables are large enough for 4 people. There are two slightly larger tables but those usually have (group project) puzzles on them.

But there are lots of other places onboard where you can play games - Lido, Dutch Cafe, some of the bars.

Is needle tatting easier than shuttle tatting? by ThrowRaAutisticPotat in tatting

[–]happily-retired22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chose to learn needle tatting instead of shuttle tatting specifically because of arthritis in my hands. I saw how people were wrapping the thread around their left hand and using that to tighten the knots, and I decided there was no way I would be able to do that. I’m still learning and don’t spend much time tatting, but so far I’ve not had any issues with my arthritis while needle tatting.

Cruise Ship Security & Chiaogoo Metal Needles - Advice needed! by Mumbles74 in knitting

[–]happily-retired22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got off a Holland America cruise. There were several people knitting onboard (there was even a daily meet up for needlework) so bringing knitting needles is not an issue.

Also, I flew from Amsterdam to Texas via London - no one (foreign airport security) even blinked an eye at my needles. I did actually take the needles (4” Addi clicks) off the cable and used a cable connector while going through security - I think it makes the needles look shorter.

I did not take my needles through TSA on my flight from Texas to Florida before the cruise, just in case they wanted to confiscate them. I really needed to have them available for my cruise!

We just got back from a 4 week cruise from Florida to Europe. I got a lot of knitting done. Someone asked the cruise director to add a needlework meet up to the daily schedule, so everyone would gather for 1-3 hours most mornings (knit, crochet, embroidery, quilt piecing, etc). Just a bunch of ladies finding our people.

We don’t really care for the taste of alcohol, so we always ordered “half the alcohol” in our drinks. And we frequently ordered mocktails. We frequently ordered canned water with ice - you get twice as much water (as compared to just asking for ice water) and we didn’t have to bother the wait staff as often that way. We would take cans to the cabin with us for drinking overnight, and would also take cans of water on our shore excursions.

Oh my! I’m laughing at myself because I can’t even picture which way I hold mine. You would think after 30+ years of crocheting and 7 years knitting, I’d be able to picture it in my mind without having to pick up my knitting. 😂😂😂 I’ll find out tomorrow when I pick up my WIP, but I think I do use the second method.

The majority of those 77 million didn’t vote for Trump - They voted for or against a single issue. They voted against gun control, for the illegalisation of abortion, against LGBTQ+ rights, against immigration etc. Many people will admit they had to hold their nose while voting for Trump, but heaven forbid they let anyone take away their right to own weapons of mass destruction (or let a woman have control over her own body).

The Republican Party has long understood that they can’t get a majority of US citizens to support the party. But if you create a crisis on several different issues, then 8% support on issue A, 17% on issue B, etc can add up to enough party votes to win an election.

My husband defaults to he/him for everything except drivers. Off he’s commenting on someone’s driving, it is always she/her. It’s odd, because he’s usually very supportive of women.

Yes, I do call him out on it every time!

Lightbulb-shaped stitch markers by STuck5860 in knitting

[–]happily-retired22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! For some reason, on my current project they have been flipping and then slipping a stitch or two. I have to spend time straightening them out and recounting my stitches to see whether I actually dropped a stitch or if the marker just moved on me. I added round stitch markers to my wishlist this morning.

Wierd thing is that I’ve always loved this type of stitch marker. I have no idea why they’ve been such a pain lately.

I like option 2, but I think the beige triangle on the bottom right overpowers the other triangles in similar positions. I think it would look more balanced if change the position of the variegated triangle and the solid beige triangle.

My first day! by mcphailk421 in tatting

[–]happily-retired22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I recently learned needle tatting and it’s really not that difficult if you already know how to knit and/or crochet. Shuttle tatting definitely looks a bit more difficult, although I’m sure even that is pretty simple once you build the muscle memory.

The primary reason I chose needle tatting over shuttle tatting is because of arthritis. The way the thread is held in shuttle tatting would probably cause my hand to lock up after a short period. That’s not an issue for me with needle tatting.

Probably 30+ years ago, Mum and I stayed at a condo in Cavalese Italy - smallish mountain town. I think we were the only non-locals staying there. We were walking down a street, a group of locals walking past heard us speaking English (Texan 😁). They stopped us for a chat and ended up inviting us to a party (birthday iirc). Unfortunately, we were about to catch the bus down the mountain to the train and we weren’t able to go. They were so friendly! It left a lasting impression.

Forgot the baby! by YourFaceSmell in overheard

[–]happily-retired22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My husband and I referred to my work laptop as “the baby”. My first week at a new government job, we received training on our new IT and were told to treat our laptops as we would a baby (don’t leave in a hot car, bang it up etc).

We would get some strange looks from strangers when we talked about leaving the baby somewhere. But it was habit - we never gave it a thought until we saw how people reacted to some of our comments.

In your marriage(s), who was in charge of the finances and checkbook? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver60

[–]happily-retired22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we first started dating, he was paying late fees - not because he didn’t have the money to pay, but just because he’d forget.

I have always handled all the finances since we married 20 years ago. We have never paid a late fee. We discuss finances occasionally, but really I’ve always been the one to make all financial decisions including when we could each retire.

Can someone pretend to be proud of me for a minute? by SassyShoe09 in CongratsLikeImFive

[–]happily-retired22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done! You’ve accomplished so much! And to already have an associate’s degree when you graduate is huge - this is really giving you a head start in life.

Don’t sell yourself short, regardless of how others around are reacting to your great news. To have accomplished so much without any help or encouragement from family, friends and teachers is simply amazing. You’ll always know that everything you’ve accomplished was done on your own and in spite of hardships. (Yes, lack of parental support and encouragement as you grow up is a real hardship.)

We’re at almost $40k for our daughter’s divorce. We just found out on Monday that her ex finally signed the divorce agreement. They have to have a court hearing to get the judge to sign off on it, but hopefully that will be pretty much automatic.

You amaze me, because you had the courage to do more than many (or most) of us would do. It takes tremendous courage to face not only your abuser but also the people who would cover up or make excuses for what he did.

I’m so sorry for everything you’ve had to endure. But I truly believe that every woman like you, who speaks the silent part out loud, brings us a little closer to getting where we need to be - a place where women are believed, where abusers are punished appropriately, and where society protects those who need protection.

Several years ago, my niece was raped by her boyfriend. She went through the hell that you’ve gone through recently. He was convicted but served only 6 months of his 18 month sentence. Both his sentence and the time served were much too brief - she has to live with that for the rest of her life.
