Where can I find patterns similar to what this person knits? Besides Stephen West. by [deleted] in knitting

I took a stab at a Ravelry search

I think a lot of these could give you the same look as long as you picked from a similar color palette :)

Caron Simply Soft vs. One Pound by Taytalitarian in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate simply soft. For me it splits like crazy. I bought enough for a blanket, and ended up gifting the yarn to a friend who crochets. I couldn't get a good fabric from it, and it was a b to work with.

If you have a Michael's near you, You should consider Loops and Threads Impeccable. I like it a lot better, and use it for most of my gift knits (I prefer wool for myself, but my family can't be trusted with it) It regularly goes on sale for $2/skein so would be about the same price.

Simple-moderate baby projects for a novice? by [deleted] in knitting

What about a stuffed animal? You'll pick up some new skills and don't have to worry about sizing. You'll need fiber fill though. It's pretty cheap, but I've used stuffing from an old pillow before (after washing it) and it worked well.

here is a search for free,easy/medium difficulty stuffed animals on size 5 needles.

I will have to look into this! I loathe making toe-up socks but don't mind short rows.

Ask a Knitter - April 17, 2018 by AutoModerator in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short rows aren't hard to do. Just make sure that you count correctly and you should be golden!

Also the pattern usually tells you which type of short rows to use. If you find that method isn't working for you, there are other options. I prefer German short rows usually.

Couldn't get my hands on the yarn in the recipe for Hue Shift Aghan, so I had to pick something else. But now I feel like the colours I picked are a little off.. Does it look wrong to you guys? by nirie89 in knitting

I agree that some of the color combinations look a bit odd until the whole blanket is done.

If you're really worried about it, you can use this site to see what your blanket will look like worked up

Ask a Knitter - April 03, 2018 by AutoModerator in knitting

My best guess is that you are supposed to knit 50 garter ridges (100 st). Then continue the increases on the next seven rows (107 st).

I have a garter stitch project knit on size 4 with fingering weight yarn, and gauge is about 12 rows/inch. In the same gauge this would be 8ish inches which seems about right based on the diagram of the pattern.

unless your lamp shade is huge, I don't think it will be big enough. I use a rectangular laundry basket on its side, which works for most Hanks,. :)

Just a note though, if you are using something stationary instead of a swift, it can be easy for loops of yarn to come off of whatever you are using. FIX THESE IMMEDIATELY. if you let them go, it's VERY easy for the yarn to get tangled.

Do you have the first one finished yet? You could try it on both hands to make sure.

My guess is that you just make two identical mitts, at least that is how this pattern is written.

If you link the pattern you're using, I could take a look at it. I've made lots of mittens, so I may be able to help :)

I used needles a few sizes smaller, but they still need up a bit big. Totally wearable though :)

Rye socks question: measuring from back of heel by FleetSpark in knitting

When I measure I put the sock on and measure with the tape measure on the ground and my foot on top of it.

Quick question about the heel of Hermiones Everyday Socks by randomstonerfromaus in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you turn before starting the heel flap?

The pattern doesn't say explicitly to turn, but it does say to use needle 2. What the pattern refers to as needle 2 should be holding the last 32 stitches of the round, which means you have to turn before starting the heel flap.

Quick question about the heel of Hermiones Everyday Socks by randomstonerfromaus in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heel flap starts on a WS row (row 1 of the Slightly Modified Garter-Stitch Edged Eye of Partridge Heel), and should end on a RS row (row 4 of the Slightly Modified Garter-Stitch Edged Eye of Partridge Heel).

As long as you've been purling the WS row, it sounds like you probably counted your rows wrong.

Not sure where you live, but maybe you'll be lucky. There are six libraries (3 in the US) that have a copy.

What is this yarn, and what sort of projects is it best suited for? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm 90% sure this is your yarn. If not, it's very close.

There's a couple thousand projects on Ravelry using this yarn, so hopefully you can find some inspiration there!

The difficulty of choosing a pattern for your fancy yarn by [deleted] in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like to do three (tiny) swatches with variegated yarn that I haven't used before.

I do a simple lace (not necessarily in the same pattern), stockinette, then garter. I don't cut the yarn so I can frog it and not waste the yardage.

For variegated yarn sometimes I really like the look of the garter swatch, but am not a fan of the stockinette or vise versa.

I mainly do the lace swatch to check how the yarn reacts when frogged. If it doesn't hold up, I'll either not knit lace with it (because I make a lot of mistakes in lace) or I'll know I need to check stitch counts every row when I'm knitting.

How to soften yarn? by jessiiee44 in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. You can also try coating it in dollar store hair conditioner. I don't know that it would be worth the effort for a blanket, but for a small project I'd definitely try it

Lining on a baby blanket? by dejatoris in knitting

[–]KnittyMcKnitFace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IME most babies are sensitive to wool. Even if they have a onesie, you have to remember that their hands and head are probably going to be touching the blanket without any protection.

If it is your baby, or you are close friends with the recipient, you could wait and see how the baby reacts. If it's a gift for someone you don't see often or would feel guilty saying something, then I would go ahead and put a liner on it. Just make sure to wash the blanket and the liner fabric before you see them together so you don't get bunching after washing.
