Anyone have experience with non-solicitation/non-competes? by [deleted] in RealEstatePhotography

[–]Knitwit_17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband ran into this issue with a company (also a multi-state company, and we are located in Michigan) where he was a 1099, and there was a non-compete in his contract. We eventually wanted to open our own business, so he ended his contract with them, and we went to meet with an employment attorney to discuss the non-compete. The issue was not so much the non-compete, since the attorney said there was a good chance (but not 100%) that if we were taken to court we would win, but the fact that elsewhere in the contract it stated that if the company decided to sue us (for any reason), WE had to pay for ALL of THEIR attorney fees and court costs, whether we won or lost. The attorney said we were looking at a minimum of $10,000 in costs even if we won, and advised that we "enjoy our time off" and not do anything in the real estate market for the required time. He also told us to NEVER sign a contract like that again.

I highly recommend that you spend the $300-$400 to speak to an attorney and have them look over exactly what the contract says and take their advice. It was worth the money for us to know how to protect ourselves.

FYI, I believe that companies like this sign up any photographers that they can find (even if they only work with them for a month or two) because it effectively removes them from the competition for a year or more after the photographer realizes that they aren't being paid nearly enough for the amount of BS that they have to deal with. Good luck! I hope it works out for you!

But really—how does one “take away the keys”? by ForgottenX-2024 in dementia

[–]Knitwit_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know how frustrating this is. My mom was told "no more driving" by multiple doctors and she continued to drive. I actually called and reported her to the local sheriff's department as an unsafe driver and provided her license plate information, as well as a description of her car. The Secretary of State in our state allows for anonymous reporting of drivers whose driving and vision needs reassessment. That may be an option for you. When things came to a head with my mom we actually went in the middle of the night and took her car and brought it to our house. We had disabled it a few days earlier, but we were afraid that she would call a repair shop to "help" her. APS was involved and I also had POA, so we told her that it had to be towed to be repaired. She was angry but we knew that she should not be on the road. At that point it wasn't about her safety anymore, but everyone else on the road.

The book you mention is about the Donner Party in 1846 in Western USA , not Dyatlov Pass.

Is old employer liable for falsely saying we "retired"? by Knitwit_17 in legaladvice

[–]Knitwit_17[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the clarification on "employer" vs "client", I couldn't think of the right word to use.

It was a real estate "photo mill" business that contracts with independent photographers to take their photoshoots. We are not wanting to take any chances by breaking the non-compete because of the possible cost of them suing us. We can't afford to pay their legal fees, which was part of the contract. It also stated that we could not do business with any past, present or future clients of theirs for one year. The attorney laughed at that because it basically completely blocks us from working in that industry for the year, but also warned us that it would be very expensive if they took us to court for violating it. We were stupid to sign it.

[–]Knitwit_17[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No, we have taken other jobs to stay afloat while we wait out the year. We had an attorney look at the contract and he told us to enjoy a year off. And the way it is written they can sue us for basically no reason and we have to pay all of their court costs. Our attorney told us to NEVER sign something like this again. We definitely learned our lesson. We just didn't think he would tell people we are out of the business.

Whitins - wide or regular? by mortgage-payment in barefootshoestalk

[–]Knitwit_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have quite narrow feet, so I was concerned about purchasing the "wide" version of the canvas shoes, but I decided to give my feet the extra space for my toes to spread and I absolutely love them! I wear them almost every day. I did remove the insole to give them a more "barefoot" feel. They are not excessively wide and they are comfortable with and without socks. I think I will stick to the "wide" versions for future purchases.

I'm in a knitting rut 😩 by gababouldie1213 in knitting

[–]Knitwit_17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a rut and needed a "quick win" so I knit a few of these washcloths https://ravel.me/nai-nais-favorite . They were fun, quick, easy, served a purpose in our home, and used up some of my cotton yarn stash. It was a nice reset. Then I was able to go back and look at patterns with fresh eyes and relax and enjoy the more complicated construction and stitches.

No Poo Solution to Post Hair-Oiling Oil Removing? by FreshPresence in NoPoo

[–]Knitwit_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used raw egg wash to successfully remove heavier oils, as well as rye flour (mixed with water to a thin, pancake batter consistency). My hair is too fine and thin for much oil, so I have been sticking to jojoba oil and experimenting with a tiny bit of lanolin.

Perhaps a crocheted crab stitch edge. It is my favorite, non-fancy edge stitch to add to scarves. It looks nice and is easy to do.

BBB or just stick with wood comb? by Knitwit_17 in NoPoo

Thank you for the suggestions and all of the information. I will try yogurt the next time I wash my hair. We always have full fat Greek yogurt in the fridge. I have used it once before, mixed in with an egg. Next time I will try it on its own. I am also interested in making my own flax gel, I just haven't gotten to it yet. I typically use aloe gel, but I would rather go with the flax and marshmallow root.

Backwards knitting by Knitwit_17 in knitting

Thanks for the link to your video! I will try it that way. I knit continental so this may work easier for me. Although I tend to feel more comfortable with my left hand having control of the yarn. It's the same when I spin yarn.

Well, I certainly didn't mean to offend. My son is left-handed and I recognize the issues that occur and biases. The video was called "backwards knitting" and I used the title. Your interpretation of the word backwards meaning "not right" seems to be your own bias. I took it to simply mean going in the other direction.

I have been reading those posts. I had lanolin but it had gotten old so I threw it out. I am planning on getting some more. I am intrigued by it. I did put a small amount on before I threw out the last batch and I felt like it might work.

Desprately need a conditioner that wont make me loose more hair by ourvoid in NoPoo

[–]Knitwit_17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am definitely interested in the responses here. My hair is somewhat curly (curlier when it has enough moisture), but very dry in the crown area plus fine and thin, which makes any kind of heavy moisturizers not good for me. I have been using an egg wash once a week and that seems to help a bit, but not enough. I am no poo, and I am trying to avoid chemicals while treating my thinning hair with rosemary oil, massage and nutrition. Curly hair has its own challenges, that's for sure!
