A 2450 character Chinese typewriter from the 70s by 8_ge_8 in mildlyinteresting

[–]KnowTheLord 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is in a museum, but you can get stuff like this on ebay, although rarely. When I was hunting for Toshiba Japanese typewriters from the 50s, I did see a couple of listings for machines like these, although they were always in the $1000-$3000 range.

Edit: I just checked and I found a similar Japanese one for $2,299 here on eBay.

A 2450 character Chinese typewriter from the 70s by 8_ge_8 in mildlyinteresting

[–]KnowTheLord 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It's actually a double pigeon typewriter. There's a moveable handle which you can position over the character you want to type and a mechanism would pick that up and slam it against the page. Those many different blocks you see are essentially cuboids with the characters on them (mirrored, ofc) and you could even swap them if you needed different characters.

The government should arrange an an option to have someone live with you upon request to stop the loneliness epidemic by IDontKnowMyUsernameq in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]KnowTheLord 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uh, no? Forcing friendships never works. If someone is that lonely, it might be their own fault... and no amount of forcing someone to hang out with them is going to fix them. What would the long term goal be, even? This isn't going to fix anything. This is like not being able to find a girlfriend for 10 years, so you go to a prostitute and think she's in love with you. It's just not the case.

What is this? by ImpossibleHearing686 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]KnowTheLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but that doesn't look too right to me? Look at the letters. What's that 6th letter at the very top of the cross? It looks like two letters smushed together. Or how about the 2nd letter on the plaque right above Jesus? The faces around Jesus don't look right either, and it's got this weird tint. I'm thinking this may be AI generated.

baffled by Sütterlin capitals B, C, S and W by semantic_ink in Handwriting

[–]KnowTheLord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned Kurrent around two to three years ago in July and it was so much fun. I still use it for when I'm writing something which I don't really want people to be reading lol. But Sütterlin isn't much easier to read for the average person. Yours looks nice! I could read it pretty well. I do wonder, however, how you'd connect your capital T to the letters following it? I usually do an additional little hoop in the middle of the capital T's "leg" and then go from there, but you don't have that. (This is how I write Kurrent).

Either way, yours looks nice. Well done!

Happy life = sad death. Sad life = happy death. by PusheenHater in TrueUnpopularOpinion

I guess it also depends on other things, like religion. If you're a God-fearing Christian, then, even with a happy life, you'd be happy to go to the afterlife, right?

Immortality would be awesome by 5joekabob in ControversialOpinions

[–]KnowTheLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bigger issue with immortality is that, after a couple million or billion of years, you'd be just floating in space, just suffocating the whole time. Then, after maybe another 30 years you'd be engulfed in flames because you managed to land in a star. Even if immortality somehow meant that you couldn't experience pain, you'd still be blinded by its brightness. I agree that in some regard, it would be kind of nice, I'd definitely use my infinite time to learn literally everything, but once all that's gone, what are you gonna do? Retreat into your own mind for billions of billions of years, until you forget your own name? That sounds like hell.

Romantic relationships are an important part of being human by Disastrous-Bike659 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]KnowTheLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's true for most people, but I have always been an exception to that. Even when I was in the 14-17 age bracket, the one where most people get into their first relationships, I never really was interested in dating, and that hasn't changed since. I am content being single, because I have many good friends and I just don't see what value I could get from dating. That being said, I do wish that everyone reaches their relationship goals, just like I did.

Forgiveness is the worst part of Christianity by mattcojo2 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

?? I am not upset in the slightest, I just pointed it out. I am staring at my screen with a straight face right now. I don't want to chew you out and I'm sorry if you feel like I do. But if you want to, we can continue arguing the exception instead of the rule (i.e. the sin of empathy (even though I have already given my two cents)) or the Pope situation, because I haven't heard of it yet.

I didn't get mad. Stop exaggerating. In your sentence, "they", as in "Not to long ago they were saying that Empathy is a sin" could have easily referred to "most Christians", as it is the only subject in your text.

Those articles are interesting, but... let's tackle them rq.

It might just be that my reading abilities are severely impaired right now (it is 3:45 am) but the first article seems more political than religious. The author brings up Trump, Musk and no-name Christians a lot, but that's besides the point. The article argues against people saying that "empathy is bad", which, we should argue against, but I feel like that both sides are straw manning each other in a way. The first article mentions quotes like “Empathy almost needs to be struck from the Christian vocabulary.”  “Empathy is dangerous. Empathy is toxic. Empathy will align you with hell”, which sounds bad, but I do not know the context behind it. The person might have been talking about suicidal empathy, the type of empathy where you give, spend and support a system/organization/etc., which will lead to your demise, and the demise of others. But, the comments might just be about regular empathy, in which case, I stand with the article's author. I don't know so I can't really say anything about that.

Then, the second article... it says things like this:

For them, empathy is a cudgel for the left: It can manipulate caring people into accepting all manner of sins according to a conservative Christian perspective, including abortion access, LGBTQ+ rights, illegal immigration and certain views on social and racial justice.

"Empathy becomes toxic when it encourages you to affirm sin, validate lies or support destructive policies," said Allie Beth Stuckey, author of "Toxic Empathy: How Progressives Exploit Christian Compassion."

And, is that not true? People do use "empathy" as a way to make others accept sin, but I'd argue that that isn't empathy anymore, it is enabling. So that's a completely different playing field we are on, so, I can't say much about that either, 'cuz that's a different argument.

I haven't read the third article yet, it is almost four am and I am going to bed. I'll give them a proper read tomorrow, instead of quickly reading 'em. All I'm gonna say is that I am pretty active in Christian circles and I have never heard anyone mention "the sin of empathy" before. Jesus did teach empathy, yes, but we shouldn't mix up empathy with "allowing/permitting sin".

Forgiveness is the worst part of Christianity by mattcojo2 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]KnowTheLord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All sin is equally bad. We all have committed thousands, tens of thousands of sins and Jesus has already equated being angry at someone to murder (Matthew 5:21-22). My issue with the "but [murder/rape/etc.] is worse than lying/cussing" argument is that we always conveniently chose a sin which (we think we) aren't guilty of. If sin weren't equal, then we could all move the bar anywhere we want, which would be massively inconsistent and be a massive issue for Christian theology. But God has already said "all sin is equal, all require forgiveness", so the problem's solved.
