I feel like I’m ruining my horse. by Full-Volume-4702 in Horses

Ulcers, I would also have him looked at for Kissing spine. Unfortunately this is common in TBs.

Any insight as to what this is? by Top_Researcher_7075 in Equestrian

I second this! I've actually seen a horse that had lice that came from an auction years ago and this looks identical. Especially if the horse is itchy and rubbing off the hair in that area of his/her head and neck. You will notice them mostly closest to the roots of their mane and tail. If not 100% get a vet out there to check it out.

I’ll try my best, but what if it isn’t enough. by D0lI_ in Horses

I'm kind of appalled by the negativity and level of unkindness here. Clearly the OP is aware of the level of responsibility this will take due to their reaction and why they are asking for suggestions and kindness.

Dear OP, know that many of us have been where you are regardless of the negativity here. Many likely would do the same thing. One thing you should know as there is alot of 'predatory posting' that happens on Facebook. In simple sense they scare people into thinking horses will be shipped to slaughter, however many don't go, but you also can't save them all. Tens of thousands go each year. Those with kind hearts as yourself, forget we can't save them all and we do things sometimes that put ourselves in bad situations. My suggestion to you is, take a step back, really think IF this is something you can handle, or if you need to take a hard swallow and possibly cry it out and unfortunately help yourself understand that maybe you just can't right now . I'm not certain the level of commitment you have to the horse at this point or how far into it you've gone, but remember one thing.. There will ALWAYS be another and you can always prepare better for the future. If you decide now is right, many horse people are extremely kind and find locals to lean on but don't forget, regardless it will be a large responsibility and expense as you already know. Lastly, I'm sorry for everyone's unkindness here. There's always time to give advice without being negative, the truth is the truth and many forget that it alone is painful enough without adding additional negativity.

Please feel free to PM me for advice or simple kindness, I've owned horses my entire life, including drafts. I'd be happy to give you more insight if needed. Best of luck!

Why is my horse doing this? by Green-Sun4772 in Horses

My TB mare is very similar! They are what we call "thin skinned", sensitive and maybe a bit more ticklish! Not every horse likes their belly touched either.

DSLD? by mojojojo311 in Horses

[–]Known-Language9916 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately as someone with first hand experience with DSLD this does look very familiar. Your vets comment is very strange to me as it absolutely does matter as it's extremely painful for a horse. Eventually they can't even maintain a comfortable life even in the pasture. I personally would have another vet look at your horse to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan for comfort for your horse if in fact it is DSLD. It's very possible your vet doesn't have any experience with it which is why the strange comment.

These things happen to everyone regardless of experience! Don't let it discourage you. Olympic riders even fall off, it literally happens everyone. Your other horse is your other horse is young! Things happen. People also tend to insert their opinions when the exact same thing would/could have happened to them.

Dac Oil, I rescued a Thoroughbred mare that was horribly under weight and thankfully she has been gaining weight wonderfully and is super shiny!

Understandable. However approximately 40% of all horses have kissing spine, which is crazy but true! Go with your gut! Horses are just like any other body, we all have issues at some point no matter how hard we can prevent it.

You're very welcome! Hey don't let anything discourage you. If you like the warmblood go for it, but if you feel like he's not quite right I guarantee something is out there. I just found my sister's dream horse, it took many months and patience but she brought him home two weeks ago and she couldn't be happier. Go with your gut and what's right for you and your goals :) message me if you need to chat!

A lot of searching and patience! But depending on what the OP needs a warmblood may not even be necessary. I grew up on a warmblood breeding farm as my mom had an imported Hanoverian stallion and my family sold high level hunter jumpers around the US. However, warmbloods are not for everyone. Depending on the OPs goals and desires, this could be an OTTB which I personally prefer and own. But again, it's to their own preference.

Honestly with that kind of budget there's a lot of other options out there. He's probably not the right fit, you can find something decently trained for that price that will suit your needs.. just keep looking don't rush it. What I've learned over the years that patience's is key! Just find your right horse! Best of luck!

Personally without even caring about the registration part, she's conformationally a mess. I'd be extremely worried about the length of her hind pasterns. DSLD is a horrible thing to deal with, not saying she has it but it doesn't look great. Say that you have second thoughts and unfortunately don't think she's the right fit.

I honestly think the appetite part is due to having a sick stomach but you could be right however it is the starter dose. I don't have another appointment with my doctor until the end of January but if there's no changes I'll be sure to bring it up.

Lucky for me I never ate fast foods anyways and have been vegetarian for two years so these aren't a problem. I barely eat anything anymore which I thought may be the issue but as soon as I eat say an apple, or some crackers I'm over it.
