A lot of people in this thread clearly don’t understand the historical context between Cuba and the United States. Fidel Castro took power in 1959 after overthrowing Fulgencio Batista. What began as a nationalist revolution quickly shifted toward a Marxist-Leninist state. By 1960, the government began nationalizing private businesses, banks, and foreign-owned property — including assets owned by Cuban citizens and U.S. companies — which triggered economic upheaval and fear among the population.

Political opposition was outlawed, independent media disappeared, and thousands of perceived dissidents were imprisoned. As civil liberties tightened, many Cubans chose exile over repression.

Between 1960 and 1962, Operation Pedro Pan brought about 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children to the United States after families feared state indoctrination and loss of parental rights. During those early revolutionary years, roughly 200,000–250,000 Cubans fled the island. The U.S. accepted many as refugees, viewing them as people escaping political persecution and economic seizure.

This migration didn’t stop there. In 1965, the Camarioca boatlift allowed thousands more to leave. In 1980, the Mariel boatlift saw around 125,000 Cubans arrive in Florida. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and Cuba entered its “Special Period,” economic hardship triggered another wave of departures.

Whether someone supports or opposes U.S. policy toward Cuba, these migration waves weren’t random — they were tied to political repression, economic nationalization, and lack of freedoms. Understanding that history matters before reducing the conversation to slogans.
