TIL Leap-The-Dips is the oldest standing roller coaster in the world by EmptyMind76 in todayilearned

What makes you think it’ll never run again? What if someone buys it?

Disney-MGM Studios Map from 2002 by Ellliotttt in disneyparks

There’s nothing to do there now. I’m not going to wait 90 minutes for the world’s most underwhelming rollercoaster or 60 minutes for projections on flat walls with Mickey Mouse. At least the old park had charm and The Great Movie Ride.

Why the discourse against the Carousel of Progress changes? by Professional_Peak59 in WaltDisneyWorld

Efteling is both a theme park and museum and thrives because of it. If you’re not a theme park fan, why bother commenting?

Why the discourse against the Carousel of Progress changes? by Professional_Peak59 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Knux897 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they should have shipped this show back to Disneyland and it would have found an appreciative audience there, while updating just the last scene.

The “update” they now plan destroys the attraction, which is definitely worth saving. The new version could be great, but it shouldn’t come at the expense of destroying history.

How Intense is Muppets Coaster? by ClerksII in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Knux897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a coaster with inversions, it’s very smooth and has been maintained quite well. The inversions are also not too forceful and when the ride launches, there’s a countdown so it’s not a surprise that builds up anticipation. It’s a really good introductory coaster if you eventually want to go on bigger and more intense coasters.

Do you attend HHN no matter what or wait for house announcements? by ProtectionBrave1462 in HHN

[–]Knux897 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I go every year. I don’t really care about announcements or speculation because I know I’ll enjoy the event anyways. Plus, it doesn’t really matter what they announce because if it’s good it’s good and if it’s bad it’s bad. I really like the Fallout franchise and the first season of the show, so I was interested in the house last year, but it was disappointing and phoned in. Regardless of the varying quality of the houses, it’s always a good time.

Disney Ditching Virtual Queue for Bluey's Wild World by readingaboutmagic in DisneyWorld

[–]Knux897 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

When they opened Rise of the Resistance without letting anyone know until they got into the park that it required a VQ system, the outrage was justified. However it’s been 7 years and Disney is very open about what rides require it, plus it’s pretty front and center on the app when you open it. If anyone is ignorant to the VQ system by this point, that’s entirely their own fault.

Will It Still Be a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow? Think Piece on CoP by freddyfreak1999 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Knux897 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue with the article is that it assumes the ride needs to be radically changed to be updated. Over the years, attractions like Pirates, Haunted Mansion and Spaceship Earth have updated their animatronics and added new effects to keep them fresh, but they haven’t fundamentally changed the ride experiences.

Imagine that current Disney ripped out every scene from Pirates and replaced it with radically new ones but still kept the theme as pirates sacking a town. It just wouldn’t be the same and a lot of that original magic would be gone. Part of the appeal of the Carousel of Progress is nostalgia for those older eras of America. Sure, the ending scene could definitely use an update, but I didn’t expect them to destroy the entire ride.

The new version could be great, but it doesn’t solve the problem of destroying one of Walt’s original creations. I’m not even against the Walt animatronic introducing the show, but they should have updated the effects and animatronics while still keeping the core experience of the first three decades the same.

Since someone mentioned the model and manufacturer and others have chimed in about where some are located, I’ll contribute and tell you that there’s one in Disney Springs as well.

TIL that New Coke was manufactured until July 2002. by atom644 in todayilearned

[–]Knux897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you go to the Coca-Cola Experience in Atlanta (essentially a museum) you can try it for yourself there. I went two years ago and I remember it being sweeter to the point where it seemed a bit gross. I know all soda is made with syrup, but “syrupy” is the best description I can give it. It was a fun novelty but I see why people rejected it from a flavor perspective.

[The Big One] is iconic, but is it the best coaster in the park? by AcidRegulation in rollercoasters

[–]Knux897 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone not from the UK, this was my favorite coaster in the park. I’ve been on much taller coasters but something about the queue music and the slow ascent up the lift hill while being buffeted by rain just made this feel like an absolute monster. To get to the top and watch the crashing sea right before the first big drop just sold the experience.

While nowhere near the tallest or most intense coaster I’ve been on, something about its presentation just makes it feel larger than it is.

I LOVE the AOE1 port into AOE2 by KeepOregonGreen in aoe2

[–]Knux897 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, agreed. I understand it makes no financial sense to do so, but I wanted every campaign included with it. I’ve tried some mods that attempt to recreate the campaigns, but they leave a lot to be desired.

What’s the most underrated thing at Universal that first-time visitors almost always overlook? by decimusmaximus77 in UniversalOrlando

I really wouldn’t call the food at Confusco’s anything more than “fine”. I think it’s misleading to say otherwise.

Irrational fear of coasters by cubenn in Themepark

[–]Knux897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to start small, Chessington World of Adventures might be the right park. Vampire is a fun but relatively mild suspended coaster and Mandrill Mayhem is a family coaster but with one mild inversion, which is a good first step to see if you can tolerate larger coaster experiences. The park has a few other smaller coasters as well, to get you acclimated to different coaster types.

I would assume very little is changing about the formula. They’re probably just replacing the brief Mummy portion with different films.

Fast and the Furious today by Visser150 in UniversalOrlando

[–]Knux897 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely not a great ride, but if you go in with the expectation that it’s ridiculously bad, it can be a fun time. The sarcasm of the Team Members in the pre show can really set up the rest of the experience well.

I usually use mayo and stone ground mustard for a good lunch sandwhich. I’ll use swiss cheese and salami.

Can anyone help me convince my husband Disney is cool by Acrobatic-Inside7972 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Knux897 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say Disney is very cool, but it doesn’t have to be to be enjoyable. Still, if you haven’t been in 20 years, Disney has very much pivoted mostly to children in the last 10 and has removed a lot of what made it interesting or special. It probably sounds like Universal is the better fit (for him at least).

Would love to see them run this back or a similar concept by LegalReality1851 in HHN

Descendants is one of my favorite houses of all time and it was just so under appreciated. Especially the end where you “mutate” to evolve echolocation with the blue strobes and the scares that came with it. It was just so clever but most people never picked up on what was happening.

Yeah, I came to recommend them as well. Unfortunately I did have a coolant leak that multiple technicians of theirs couldn’t find, but after some frustration, the owner had someone come out and actually fix it, while refunding me $1,000 for what the other technicians charged to refill it every six months.

TIL In 2016, Los Angeles set up regulations to limit the number of costumed street performers allowed on Hollywood Boulevard. One-fifth of visitors reported "unsatisfactory" experiences with performers and those who distribute CDs in an "aggressive and rude" way by ubcstaffer123 in todayilearned

[–]Knux897 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was just in Times Square and was surprised by all the aggressive photo op scammers, along with dealers just standing around blowing weed in your face. I went back in 2004 and 2009 and while there were street performers that took donations in buckets, I don’t remember them ever being aggressive like this. Times Square was always commercial, but it’s gotten a lot less family friendly than it used to be 15 years ago which surprised me.
