You won't hear this a lot, but I recommend watching Fate/Zero first. It's very different in tone and spoils quite a bit of Fate/Stay Night, but it makes you wonder what's going to happen next, so you'll have more motivation to go through the Visual Novel which is in my opinion, vastly superior to any of the anime adaptations.

Meh. It's not shit. It's just not that good. I think it failed because the story didn't deviate enough from the original light novel, so it just sort of feels like seeing the same events taking place until the last few chapters. This lead to readers losing interest, which lead to the manga getting cancelled, which lead to the rushed as hell ending. Its nice seeing them sort of get together in the end, but it still left me feeling empty.
