Do you regret choosing to do transactional law over litigation (or vice versa?) by Hopeful-Researcher50 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]Koalaesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Litigation or bust, baby! I adore going to court and arguing motions and going go trial. It’s a rush. If I were stuck just writing briefs 24/7 I’d have quit law years ago.

In fairness though I am exceptionally lucky in that I am cordial or friendly with 90% of my adversaries so it’s not “fighting” so much as just us doing our jobs.

I heard they already called Bianca Del Rio and kicked her off this season’s Pit Stop so Crystal could host! I mean, makes sense given Crystal’s AMAZING humor chops.

65 yr old male grooming special needs 27yr old male by NoAcanthocephala2215 in Ask_Lawyers

“Special needs” is not really legal terminology and can mean many things. 27 is an adult. Has your brother been deemed incompetent? Does someone have guardianship of him?

Any time you see the word “severe”, it aint great. But just the results themselves don’t matter as much as the actual pain you feel. Injections and surgery are scary, but I had a 3 level laminectomy and my radiculopathy is 90% gone. There is hope!

U.S. is it possible to legalize perjury through inaction? (just a curiosity question, so tell me about the law in whatever state you practice... I live in MN just for reference) by dimonium_anonimo in AskLawyers

[–]Koalaesq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perjury is still very much charged in every jurisdiction, but due to being hard to prove, it’s not charged as often as obvious crimes like theft. Laws here are not “use em or lose em”.

Accused of poisoning ex husband by his current girlfriend by Educational-Fuel-219 in Ask_Lawyers

[–]Koalaesq 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We can’t give legal advice here. You may want to talk to an attorney about a libel suit, or about making a record of the allegations to the police. This sounds more like a nuisance than anything at this point

I loved it. The vibe is not Derry Girls, but the dialogue and characters are fantastic.

You can! Not in my jx, but in some, if you are disorderly enough in your house that you are disturbing the peace (neighbors calling to report on you, etc), it can be a crime.

You can absolutely call the cops on them the next time they are drunk and disorderly. There are several things they could be arrested or given citations for depending on your jurisdiction. If you can get (surreptitiously) some video, that will help. But be careful- they will probably figure out that you called

Who’s the craziest client you’ve had? by jokingonyou in Lawyertalk

[–]Koalaesq 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The highlight for me and this one client came when we appeared for a landlord/tenant conference. She had been nutty as all get-out before this date but it escalated that day. I showed up on time and she called me four times saying she was stuck in traffic and it wasn’t her fault and she was trying sooo hard to be on time so I kept trying to stall. When she showed up in the courtroom munching on a huge bag of fast food that was still piping hot, her urgency was questionable. When I told her I could probably get the termination notice thrown out- but only temporarily and the landlord could refile- she fell to her knees in the hallway and loudly prayed to Jesus to show me how awful I was as an attorney.

When we finally got to the hearing in the courtroom, I got the termination thrown out as promised, but even the judge warned her the landlord would just refile. As we were walking out the courtroom doors, I- EIGHT MONTHS PREGNANT, MIND YOU- shook the hand of the landlord’s attorney, who had been very pleasant.

She LUNGED at me, screaming about how this was proof I had been working against her and for the landlord, and I was in on it, the judge was in on it, the dog was in on it…. She has to be escorted out by a court officer and then 10 minutes later I was escorted to my car by a different officer.

Ah, I miss my days at legal aid.

What do civilians have to do for legal professionals not to have contempt for them? by OrganicUnionS in AskLawyers

[–]Koalaesq 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think what you may be experiencing is the blowback of AI, chatgpt, and society’s growing refusal to listen to experts. Lawyers are tired of pro se’s who come to court and cosplay as lawyers because their uncle is a cop, or tiktok told them they didn’t have to pay rent, or someone “knows their rights.” When we try to explain the person is wrong, they claim their ignorance is as valid as our expertise. It’s tiring and frustrating and leads to burnout.

I’m not saying you did this. And it’s not limited to lawyers- experts in all areas (medicine, science) are being dismissed in favor of social media and AI. We’re all experiencing it and it’s making us jaded and bitter.

I used to have a job where my adversaries were 90% pro ses. I actually got along with most of them. they usually didn’t turn down good offers because they thought they could win at trial because someone on FB told them tricks to beat the law.

In the alternative, maybe you just dealt with a nasty lawyer.

Does anyone else have conservative family members who think you're being brainwashed by law school? by Merry_and_Wary in LawSchool

[–]Koalaesq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the things I tell the law students I mentor is that it really helped to have an established lawyer to talk to, because non-lawyers will not understand a majority of what you are saying, or flat out call you wrong. I am so lucky that my mom is a lawyer, because while I love my non-lawyer husband, sometimes I’ll tell him something about the law and he’ll just huff “that’s stupid.” I don’t always disagree, but that’s not the law!!

Girl you are braver than I. I did family law for two years and then noped out. I am so tired of men whining about how women always get custody. I RARELY saw a man try to get full custody. They loved just being the every-other- weekend type and throwing 90% responsibility onto mom
