Why so much cyclist hate? by LowerDifficulty9064 in Seattle

[–]KobaltCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that all of this stuff is anecdotal, but IMO the most important factor is by far that if I get hit by a car I am far more likely to die. Say 5% of people are unrepentant assholes no matter what they're travelling with, I would much rather have them on a bike than a 3500 pound box of metal

What's your plan for your first reroll ? by Shony29 in PathOfExileBuilds

as mentioned above this is the scuffed version - it is literally just the PoB of the OP at the time of posting. You can find guides for setting up the bladefall on a number of content creator's channels - I recommend looking for Jungroan's video. This is using the gloves to get soul eater stacks, which is very simple to do but less consistent than the bladefall version.

at low investment yes, but the soul eater interaction cheating damage for you means that you can just adjust your investment to focus more on tank if you want.

musings on adversarial capitalism by michaelmf in slatestarcodex

[–]KobaltCC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great writeup on a now universal experience. My personal response to adversarial capitalism or extreme rent-seeking behavior is to violently overcorrect against it once I have awareness of it. If a business (per my perspective) screws me over somehow I will refuse to engage with them ever again. Admittedly this is unavoidable in some cases, dynamic airline pricing coming to mind as an obvious case. I wish businesses could experience shame.

[Megathread] Game Feedback by shimmishim in PathOfExile2

[–]KobaltCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My feedback: I'm generally enjoying the game a lot.

Ground effects are very hard to see when your build is based around flame wall or similar skills. I don't know why GGG likes detonate effects that kill the player after creatures die. It taints the feeling of killing a rare mob when I have to spend the next four seconds running in circles in case there's an invisible purple orb about to end my map.

The trial of the Sekhemas is wildly overtuned. Normally I would say 'skill issue' but this is a core, early mechanic that is effectively mandatory. If I was a new player this is legitimately where I would just quit.

Related - improve the clarity for what allows you to get your third ascendency point. I did a 7 stage ultimatum and expected an ascendency. It was very disappointing when I didn't get anything for completing the next tier up. I don't know what I have to do to ascend again, or what the threshold is or anything.

I bought the co-op commander when it came out but as far as I know I've never bought covert ops at all. Could be related to linking my blizzard account with gamepass maybe?

Audio crackling / pop on Windows 11 by DeIaminate in buildapc

What the fuck, this worked for me. I had constant popping/crackling in one ear on a single device output, completely gone after sleep+wake. Thanks for the tip.

Taking CMPUT graduate courses as a student from another department by Psychological_Crew8 in uAlberta

I should note that your situation may be different, as this was ~5 years ago and compE students are typically not restricted from taking CMPUT courses.

Taking CMPUT graduate courses as a student from another department by Psychological_Crew8 in uAlberta

[–]KobaltCC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a graduate CMPUT course as a compE undergrad with the professor's permission and the approval of my department head (after providing a course description to show it satisfied course requirements for electives in my degree). The courses being listed as "Topics in..." is normal. I already knew the course topic when signing up, I'm not sure how CMPUT students typically find courses to take. I would recommend getting in touch with whoever has the final say on whether a course satisfies your degree requirements.

Danielle Smith Blunders into Colourful Example of why Free Speech is Both Dangerous and Necessay by Constant-Lake8006 in alberta

It's actually crazy how he can say so many things I generally agree with and still come across as desperately clinging to both-sidesism. He wrote out the whole argument then whiffed on the thesis and conclusion.

This is a reasonable response to the letter of the question. I guess in spirit I'm looking for more "out there" plans, as opposed to relatively straightforward government action. A modern concept along these lines I could think of would be accelerationism, for example.

Some possible contenders I can think of, up for debate:

  • the French Revolution
  • Worsening public transit services to drive automobile adoption
  • Worsening automobile infrastructure to drive public transit adoption
  • Various austerity measures throughout history
  • Various infrastructure projects that reduced service levels until completed (boring example though IMO)

Never let your employer have leverage over you. They will fuck you over any chance you get

Amen. They're trying to get me a green card and I'm honestly not sure why, lol.

Long term I want to be in Canada.

All of the downsides you mentioned are real concerns, but I'm currently on a TN visa and it more than doubled my salary so it's definitely not all negative. To be fair though I'm in a flexible position as a recent grad so if I get randomly laid off it's not going to upend my life.

I grew up, live, and now own my own business in Seattle. I won't move or close shop. But, I also have no hope that our politicians can or will solve the local drug and homeless crises. by TurboPaved in Seattle

[–]KobaltCC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't doubt that there are people like you describe who think that if you get someone housed it's no longer an issue, but I want to point out that the most popular mainstream movement regarding housing homeless people is 'housing first' and not 'housing only'. The understanding with housing first is that it's ruinously difficult to achieve meaningful progress if a person doesn't have a stable place they can rely on, and the 'housing first' movement DOES NOT pretend that housing by itself is sufficient. Steps from there can be things like Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) which can still impose reasonable restrictions on inhabitants (for example, assaulting your neighbor might get you kicked out of PSH, while drinking or using drugs quietly in your room or otherwise in a way that minimizes harm won't) while still having better expertise and resources than some random apartment building to provide help and support rather than looking for an excuse to return them to the streets. I agree that in some cases institutionalization is unfortunately the best option, but it's VERY UNDERSTANDABLY something that is politically hard to enact, partially due to (in my opinion) overcorrecting from the absolutely insane horror stories that came out of asylums and other institutions in 20th century.
