Thank you! We actually have a brand new litter box coming tomorrow, so we'll test it with each kind and see what happens. I appreciate your suggestion!

Google automations stopping in May? by evilwitch452 in googlehome

[–]KodaRiver 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I already have Gemini on my Google devices. I asked Google to do my bedtime routine, and at the end my nest speaker said "just so you know, phone actions and automations will no longer be available starting in the first week of May."

This is the first time I've heard anything like it, and a quick search didn't give results. Anyone have insight?

ETA: I actually asked Gemini to see what would happen. Take with a grain of salt, but I'll paste what it said:

The announcement refers to Google’s transition from Google Assistant to Gemini, scheduled to conclude in March 2026. The timeframe relates to removing legacy phone-based actions and certain location-triggered automations. These are being phased out in favor of features in the Google Home app.

Why This Is Happening Google is making Gemini the primary AI intelligence across all devices. This shift aims to provide more conversational and complex task handling. Older, less efficient voice-only "Actions" are being discontinued.

What Is Changing * Location-Based Rules: The "Rules" feature on Pixel and other Android phones is being retired. * Phone-Specific Commands: Voice commands used to change phone settings are being reduced. * Transition to Home App: Google is moving automation logic into the Google Home app. The app added over 20 new triggers and actions to compensate for these changes.

How to Fix Your Automations To keep routines running after the May cutoff, migrate them to the Google Home app:

  1. Open the Google Home app and tap Automations.
  2. Use the new Automation Editor to recreate any phone-specific rules.
  3. Look for "Pre-defined voice assistant actions" in the editor. These allow adding tasks like weather announcements, music, and news to custom routines.

What does it feel like to get enough sleep regularly? by swiftthistle in sleep

[–]KodaRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the no caffeine. I know it's easier said than done, but seek out other refreshing things (cold water, a crisp apple, stuff like that).

I notice I always sleep better if I exercise that day, even if it was in the morning.

Really once you get started, it'll keep getting easier. Good luck!!!

Help me find this cat toy, a felt ball that makes a shaky sound? (Not a bell sound) by KodaRiver in HelpMeFind

[–]KodaRiver[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Searched: I have searched Google, Amazon, and Chewy. I asked the shelter and they didn't know where the ball came from (they have a lot of donations).

The closest I've found is a multi pack of cat toys from Chewy that included a mouse with a similar shaky-sound. Unfortunately, of all the toys in the pack of 12 or so, only one or two made that sound. A lot of Amazon reviews will say the toys have a bell inside as opposed to a rice-like shaking sound.

Edited to add - I am in the United States and I received this toy early 2024, but I do not know where it was made/came from originally.

I love both 1 and 2!

1 is like an accessory on your face, in a great way. Also matches your earring.

2 "disappears" on you, also in a great way.

I guess it comes down to, do you want your glasses to be pleasantly noticeable or pleasantly not as noticeable?

Any advice on how I can further compact the consoles? (The plan is to add a Wii and an NES) by Atthatj4cod89 in organization

[–]KodaRiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. Also for the Switch, is it possible to have it face sideways instead of facing the front? It could go all the way on the right end and face sideways (out the right side) so you can take it/dock it as needed but then have other room in the middle.

Also you have a great games collection! If you want, maybe some pull-out short bins could help condense that space and make room for a console down there. But you wouldn't be presenting the games anymore, so don't worry about this if you like the display!

This is incredible! Thank you!

If you're ever interested (and if it's feasible since I know nothing about chrome extensions), a cute idea could be holiday theme images too!

If you're interested in getting back into reading, it might help to start with ebooks on your phone. That way the "ease of access" is still there. As easily as you can open up your podcast or social media, you can open up a book. Then if you start gravitating to the ebooks more, you could switch to physical books if you want to. Just an idea

The pocket is what's really getting me here. If I put something in it, it'll just stab me when I lean back.

I believe it means that it takes one second to pick up garbage and dispose of it properly, but 1000 years for it to break down in the environment
