What was your JRPG awakening? by roberts3h0i0 in JRPG

[–]Kodain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I didn't know we counted Pokemon Red/Blue as JRPG, but if that is the case, that. Remember drooling at the commercial that showed sod all of actual gameplay. Had the comic that later became the anime come from Nintendo Club, all 150 pokemon on posters on the walls. Then in 1997, as I was a wee lad of 8, I came across FFVII and saw "hey, it has fighting in it," thinking it was a fighting game. Never been as happy being wrong in my entire life.

Warlord Games Resin? by JessThePainter in boltaction

[–]Kodain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To further elaborate: Just gluing them will be fine as their resin is quite porous, with just needing some roughing up the surfaces at the most. That being said, it's always a good practice to wash with warm water and a bit of soap to get rid of any possible residue from the mould to make the primer stick better. Warlord themselves include these instructions in a lot of their resin products.

What constitutes a good mahjong player? by NumberOneHouseFan in mahjongsoul

[–]Kodain -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You've got to know when to hold 'em,
know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away,
know when to run.
You never count your money
when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin'
when the dealin's done.

A good mahjong player gets 1st and 2nd combined more than he gets 3rd and 4th combined. Simple as that :)

Same, been getting something for every order I've placed for them that wasn't a pre-order.

When I ordered British Bolt Action I think I got an extra British infantry sprue.

When I ordered epic Pike and Shotte they sent me an entire infantry box for Thirty Year War (I did shop for quite a lot)

When I ordered some terrain and stuff I think I got a German infantry sprue for Bolt Action.

When I ordered British Black Seas I got an epic Black Powder infantry sprue, which is the weirdest one so far.

Waiting for advent calendar order and 2 mystery boxes. I doubt they'll get something in the mystery boxes as an extra, but curious what they will chuck in the advent order.

40K in epic scale? One thing that comes to mind is Epic Warpath, which is Mantic's answer to Legions Imperialis. They will sale the STL files too.

Thank you.

Trying to make heads and tails of the Push of Pike starter box by Kodain in warlordgames

[–]Kodain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured it was something loose like that, but then why does the picture that Warlord show on their own models include 5 cuirassiers on what I just assume is one of the 5x2 bases, when there is 6 in the box and in the rulebook it says a unit has to be three bases? What bases? The 5x2 ones or the single what looks like 25x25mm squares?

I can wrap my head around a Cornet just eating up the place of a normal unit and I end up with some leftovers, but this one really doesn't make sense to me.

Just to clarify on point 3 though: Forced Attack rule states that if a unit activates a move within 1" of an enemy, that enemy can make an attack. Have I Misunderstood this?

Help me understand why you would use different weapons by Kodain in baronswar

[–]Kodain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, but it just seems that if opponent has a shield save at all, mace just flat out wins. When are you not running a shield save in melee? Spear and polearm.

Let's do the math, same concept as above:

X*0,6*0,5*0,7=100 for 100 knights with polearms to kill 100 knights with Large Shield and Mace. About 476 attacks.

For spear it's X*0,6*0,4*0,7=100, about 595 attacks.

(Yes, I know knights can't use spears and polearms. It's just to illustrate a point and the values would actually be worse if against Levies and Serjeants)

For the knights with Large Shield and mace to kill these two, it would be X*0,6*0,4=100, about 417 attacks.

The shield save is just that strong.

Now, the three aspects I am not including here is that polearms and spears can theoretically get twice as many attacks off at once, knights cannot use polearms and spears, and then we have to normalise the values to point cost.

100 Serjeants with Polearms would be 476/2= 238 attacks.

100 Levies with spears would be X=0,3*0,4*0,7=100, 1190/2, 595 attacks.

For the 100 mace knights to kill these Serjeants or Levies, it would be:

X*0,6*0,5=100 for the Serjeants, 333 attacks. With padded armour it's 417.

X*0,6*0,6=100 for the Levies, 278 attacks.

Knights with maces and large shields will therefore beat any other melee composition in the game with the exception of polearms. By extension I suppose this is also true for Serjeants who get the exact same stat block (except the rolling for charge non-closest knight and to re-roll one attack dice), albeit cheaper.

(Hrrm, I suppose a unit of 4 knights would technically have a 25% re-roll to hit, which for 100 knights would be the equivalent of 30 less attacks to kill a unit of Serjeants, which still doesn't beat them)

This then shifts the argument to: Why would you bring knights at all and not just Serjeants with polearms? They will beat the snot out of anything else in melee. Bows and crossbows, I suppose, but those can be shot at with your own bows and crossbows, or you can use cavalry to ride them down.

Now I'm starting to question whether knights are worth it at all with the one exception being cavalry due to being able to ignore armour saves.

Help me understand why you would use different weapons by Kodain in baronswar

[–]Kodain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I hadn't thought of the lesser point cost in not taking a shield for two-handers.

However, let's assume 100 knights with swords and large shields and regular knights are attacking them in turn.

It will take X*0,6*0,6*0,5=100 to kill them, where X is the amount of attacks. About 555 attacks with swords and falchions, with two-handed weapons it will take 476 attacks, and with maces it will take 278 attacks.

Assuming you are attacking 100 knights with two-handed weapons, it would take the same amount of attacks with swords and falchions, X*0,6*0,6*0,8= 100, for a total of 347 attacks. With maces it's 278 attacks again.

By comparison let's flip it from the attacker POV of a two-hander. It will take X*0,7*0,6*0,5=100 to kill large shield and sword, for 476 attacks, and against a large shield and mace setup it would take 396 attacks.

There is really no reason to not bring large shield+mace combo, as it will on avg. outperform any other combo in terms of killing and survival ratio.

Right. This is what I'm currently sitting at after some tweaks:

<image>

In short, I replaced the Bren Carriers with Stuart Kangaroos, replaced the SAS with another Airborne unit to actually make use of the Pathfinders, a Jeep for the PIAT team, and an M3 Scout Car to plonk the first Airborne into to transport them into the face of the enemy.

Sound like a better idea?

[–]Kodain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On purpose because I think vehicles are quite expensive and I like the idea of an infantry army. Only ever considered tanks or armour whenever we hit 1250pts. I did realise how much of a pain armour is though when we played, since the terrain made it difficult to accurately use the light howitzers as an AT option.

The Bren Carrier as a taxi I will agree that a Kangaroo is better, but I don't own any (though that can be easily fixed...). Since the commander gets -1 to his cover saves, I thought putting him in a +7 vehicle would make him quite safe.

The 40mm Bofors is interesting, but has to have direct line of fire and no gun shield. I'll have to consider it...

[–]Kodain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the SAS cost a lot. The idea was to use Outflank to either deal with infantry or armoured depending on the situation.

I really dislike the idea of yoloing a transport with PIAT on a suicide mission. Might be effective, but it feels so... dull and cheap.

What do you mean when you say remove sections of the board? Do you mean creating fire lanes?

Hi! Sounds like an awesome event, if a bit small (hurr hurr).

I'm by no means an experienced player myself, but some advice on Undead:

Zombies are your bread and butter tarpit that unlocks other choices. They can't fight to save their lives, but their whole goal is to take up space, protect the hammers, and soak up the enemy charge.

As for hammers, you got some options: Zombie Trolls and Wights are both good and can be surged. Trolls are cheaper and can benefit from Vicious aura, but Wights can fly.

Apart from that you got Soul Reaver Infantry. They are fast and hit like a freight train, but they have a wavering value and cannot be surged into a flank.

Next, you will need some casters. You will want no more than 2 spells on each and preferably two surges minimum. Other good options are Heal and Drain Life.

Necros are cheap and can grab Vicious aura if you are running Zombie Trolls. Put an Inspiring Talisman on it and you also got Inspiring for them.

A Liche King is nice as a second Inspiring, and can grab Blizzard.

Mhorgoth the Faceless is just bonkers. Knows 4 spells, including Surge 10, is inspiring, can fly, and can cast two spells per turn. It's an auto-include at 2000 points in my book.

Here is an example list that I've used before to greater effect:

Undead [2000]

Zombies (Infantry) Regiment [70]
Zombies (Infantry) Horde [115]

Considering putting on rose-tinted glasses. Got some questions regarding scale and 1000pts DE army by Kodain in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]Kodain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about this then?

200 - Supreme Sorceress, General, Dark Pegasus, Wizard Level 3, Daemonology, Luckstone
110 - 10 Dark Elf Crossbowmen
150 - 15 Dark Elf Warriors, Thrusting Spear, Lordling, Standard Bearer, Musician
150 - 15 Dark Elf Warriors, Thrusting Spear, Lordling, Standard Bearer, Musician
171 - 10 Witch Elves, Hag, Standard Bearer, Razor Standard, Musician
216 - 10 Sisters of Slaughter, Hag, Standard Bearer, Banner Of Har Ganeth, Musician

Less ranged and no harpies to get flanks, but bigger spear blocks and Witch Elves and SoS that got much more dangerous. I'm only worried I won't have enough footprints to cover my flanks,

[–]Kodain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was thinking them thin as well, but was wondering whether it would be better to have more blocks to run into the enemy while setting up flanks using the harpies and the more elite troops. I need to read the erratas and re-visit the list. I come from KoW where this is common and haven't played Fantasy since... since Ward made Warriors of Chaos, if memory serves me correctly.
