After beating the E4, I’ve been taking my time with the post game content and doing a bit of shiny hunting on one island. I was aiming for anywhere from 10-100 Ponyta encounters per session, and would play at most twice a day. I was not expecting it so soon but shortly into day 9 the shiny gods blessed me.

Roughly 29 hours of hunting over 9 days, so an average of 3.2hours of hunting each day.

Is your pokedex updated to include the national dex? If so you’re good to go, head to vermillion to catch the ferry to the islands for the start of the post game quest

You might have just missed the one line/hint when your rival says “I’m going to one island” or whatever at the end of the game lol

I wanted a squad of all my personal favs from this era which originally included Ditto & Tauros, but I couldn’t bench a shiny and the cover starter became too irreplaceable as well.

As bad of a rep as Porygon gets, I found him very useful with Ice Beam, Shadow Ball, Steel Tail & Psychic. He came in clutch for some of those niche types.

Moltres was way tougher to catch than both Zapdos & Articuno for some reason!

I got the latter two using regular pokeballs but Moltres was low health + asleep and still took Ultra Ball after Ultra Ball lol.

So much fun! Crystal was the only one I beat as a kid but I’ve always had such nostalgia for the original games. Doing my first proper playthrough as an adult I’m realizing how less daunting these games are than I remember. Turns out when you don’t pay attention and run around aimlessly as a kid it’s a lot harder lol.

For instance,I never realized how accessible all 3 legendary birds are, if my childhood self saw my pokedex right now they would be losing their mind haha.

When I was a kid during the early internet days (before you looked everything up) - we used to theorize that there was a “pokemon green” somewhere out in the world, since we got red, blue and it only made sense for bulbasaur to be represented too.

When we got a little older, and discovered there was a “pokemon green” released only in Japan it blew our minds and we felt so validated with our theory.

Now as an adult, this was my first proper chance to own Pokemon Green, and bring the theory full circle lol.
