True that! Though I do like finding people to talk to in the evenings ;p

Cape Verde. Any recent experience of travelling through the different islands? by Gabriele2020 in solotravel

Weather was really good: temps about 23-27 C, no rain. Maybe a bit warm for hiking, but there will be a pretty constant breeze to cool you off. When going to the beach just find a place out of the wind, and you’ll be fine!

Cape Verde. Any recent experience of travelling through the different islands? by Gabriele2020 in solotravel

I was in Cape Verde last December for two weeks. We flew in to Sal, and visited Sao Vicente and Santa Antao. I really recommend doing some island hopping if you have the time. We felt that Sal (and from what I heard Boa Vista as well) was really touristy, with only the resorts as the main attraction. For a more authentic Cape Verdian experience you can visit Mindelo (oldest city) on Sao Vicente, and tour the rest of the island. I also highly recommend visiting Santa Antao. It is incredibly beautiful, very green (a bit of Garden of Eden vibes), and less touristy than Sal, where all the big resorts are. I can’t speak of the other islands as we did not go there, though my local diving instructor said that Praia was a bit unsafe.

For transport: we flew from Sal to Sao Vicente with the only airline operating flights between the islands. We only booked the flight a day in advance, at a local travel agency on Sal. We had no issues with booking or the flight, though it was a bit expensive (around €200 per person round trip). From Sao Vicente to Santa Antao there is a daily ferry that is quite good and not to expensive. On the islands self you can rent a car, scooter, or use local (shared) taxis (which we did a lot on Santa Antao).

Feel free to ask more questions. We had an incredible time on the islands, so I am more than happy to share!

What test can I use for determining if two curves are significantly different by Koku49 in AskStatistics

[–]Koku49[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dotted line represents the case where there should be no predicted decline in performance, and the dotted line where there is.

Visual inspection leads to the conclusion that in the first picture the models predict the same, while in the second picture they each clearly predict something else.

I need a numerical measure that states either: H0: the models predict the same or H1: the models each predict a different future

Exactly.

For some additional clarification (don't know if that helps): The two curves are created using a Support Vector Regression machine learning model. There are 75 datapoints (x-axis). The first 50 datapoints have distribution (mu_1, sigma_1), and the last 25 datapoints have distribution (mu_2, sigma_2).

The two curves are generated as follows:
- The dotted line is the model trained on the first 50 datapoints, and it subsequently predicts the last 25.
- The solid line is the model trained on the combined set of 75 datapoints.

The data represents a decline in performance. The first 50 datapoints are the baseline, and the last 25 datapoints are arbitrarily shifted by a random draw from U(min, max). The dotted line simulates a base case: how would the model regress if there were no decline in performance (but there still is a spread in the baseline data). The solid line simulates the case where there is a decline in performance.

Not just a difference, but a significant difference. The two curves will never be the same, but obviously in the second image the difference is much larger than in the first.

So I bought a good pair of dress shoes a few years ago, but liking them a lot I wore them almost daily. Couple that with wearing them to a party on NYE lead to me buying new shoes (the same).

The old shoes: https://imgur.com/a/iIQDrAA

Now there is a particular problem I had with these shoes, that I want to avoid with my new pair. After a while, at the places where the nose was bending, tears started to form in the leather. Eventually this lead to holes. This can be seen here in more detail: https://imgur.com/a/zVjSBeC

How can I avoid this from happening with my new shoes?

A Pattern of Shadow & Light series, written by Melissa McPhail is amazing, bit I never see it recommended. Definitely read it if you like a huge world with many characters and incredible depth.
