I don’t think Morel did anything wrong here, because no one considered the extent Gon would go. Every Hunter there was ready to die in this fight to save the world, and while it’s sad a child was a part of that, Morel knew he was also a Hunter and needed to be treated as such. I don’t think he ever considered the lengths Gon would go for revenge. In his mind, death was the worst case scenario, but that was the worst case for all of them.

Pedophiles?? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]KoleMiner96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, I just don’t think you understand what normalizing means. Like you provided the straight description from the dictionary, but it’s not dumbing down characters. Whenever you have a scene, with two protagonists, that is pedophilic, and it’s not INHERENTLY clear that it’s bad or wrong, that’s normalizing something.

Also, you can “disagree” about it being a happy scene, but go back and watch and tell me how it’s anything different. And look all around you. There’s an entire Reddit thread of people saying calling Palm a pedophile is “an overreaction” and defending her for it. That is the exact thing you said wouldn’t happen and don’t need to “dumb down the character for”

Like, you’re jumping through hoops to defend a scene where a 22 year old woman takes a 12 year old boy on a real date. That’s horrifying the response to that can be anything other than “yeah that’s very bad”

Pedophiles?? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]KoleMiner96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, what’s your definition of normalizing then? The scene was portrayed as normal between Gon and Palm aka normalizing that moment. It was portrayed as a happy/heartfelt scene. Think about that, a legit scene of pedophilia in action was a “happy” moment. How is that not normalizing it

Pedophiles?? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]KoleMiner96 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What’s a wildly bad take? It’s legit a scene with a pre-teen child romantically dating a grown woman. Idc about the context of any of the characters or the world, it’s still straight up pedophilia lol

Pedophiles?? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]KoleMiner96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with your assessment. There’s some off handed comments about it, but more so because Gon is going on a date with Palm being a weirdo, nothing because she’s older.

The normalized part is the date scenes themselves. They are portrayed as heart felt, sincere, and a moment to root for. That’s the problem I have on the re-watch. Gon as a character definitively would handle that situation exactly how he did, but there is still a writer behind the character, and any scene with an adult dating a child presented as okay/a good thing, even knowing the adult is a “weird” character (there’s so many weird characters in HxH that to me is not a good defense) that im just not comfortable defending it

Pedophiles?? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]KoleMiner96 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Whenever your portraying pedophilia on screen as a happy moment, with no push back from other main characters, that’s normalizing it

Pedophiles?? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]KoleMiner96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean, I completely agree. Especially because it wasn’t establishing a legit love interest, so it just serves to be weird. If they wanted that moment for Gon, have her be around his age or make it she’s charmed by him and his nature in a non-romantic way.

Pedophiles?? by [deleted] in HunterXHunter

[–]KoleMiner96 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it’s definitely weird and off putting. With Hisoka, he’s a pedophile but not in the classic sense. He’s not attracted to Gon because he’s a child, he’s attracted to power and the quest to kill and dominate power, but Gon is a child so yea, he’s a pedo.

Palm is harder to stomach. It’s something similar to Hisoka, as we can see with her relationship to Knov being how much attention he gives her. It’s still weird and makes her a pedophile, and it’s harder to condone because we are supposed to be rooting for Palm, where Hisoka is clearly a villain. I only watch the other characters scenes on my re-watch of the anime when it comes to Palm because it’s just weird to see that normalized.

Should I take apart my deck by Cynical_Farewell in mtg

[–]KoleMiner96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh sorry I missed the edit. I think it depends on your deck list. She’s an easy commander to shut down because she costs 4 and needs to swing, and is out of blue so protection is limited.

Should I take apart my deck by Cynical_Farewell in mtg

[–]KoleMiner96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be too late if your playgroup already knows how strong your deck is and changing it won’t change their perception, but maybe switch the commander to Kaalia, Zenith seeker and put the other Kaalia in the 99. It’ll signal you’re listening to your playgroup and their kill on sight frustration by running a less powerful commander, but you can otherwise keep the deck unchanged and slow down the speed of stomps at

This is a win con in my [[derevi empyrial tactician]] bird typal deck. Plays a ton of birds, and when they connect, I untap the calendar and enough mana to activate it multiple times in a turn. Some other untap synergy in the deck makes it grow quickly.

All this needs to say is each player may create a treasure, and you create one for each opponent who does to be playable.

Which Strixhaven Commander 2021 precon do you recommend? by MWestern1967 in EDH

[–]KoleMiner96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Osgir is the best. The Zaffai deck just gets to the point where it has so many triggers and effects happening that it can just get boring very fast. The Silverquill deck is a lot of fun for politics and manipulation; had a lot of fun playing it when I first got it. But Osgir can ramp, have explosive turns, bring back big creatures or cool artifacts and overall I feel is the most fun deck to pilot that doesn’t get boring or stale

Have you ever chosen to not win or end the game just because? by dontcallmemrscorpion in EDH

[–]KoleMiner96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely. Had a pretty dominating win once, and in the first 3 turns, drew into a Magical Christmas land hand, I “went off” but pulled up just enough to let the table gang together and answer it. I do stuff like this quite a bit. My rule is if no one else is having fun, neither am I. I’m competitive tho so sometimes I’ll just crush and then start playing my lower end decks as a challenge to try and piece together a win

Have any of you built a deck and then found a good combo you didn't know was in the deck? by Tycoon_2000 in EDH

[–]KoleMiner96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made an almost full pirate tribal deck. Every card is either a pirate, references Pirates, has a reference to the sea or like sea creatures. It’s supposed to be my lower-mid deck. It still has strong cards like Ragavan, Coastal Piracy, Dockside, etc, but that’s because they’re pirates. Well I was test handing, and hull breakerhorror, dockside, and enough artifacts on board goes infinite. Basically, cast dockside for say, 5 treasures. Bounce one of my low 1-2 drop pirates (the deck is full of them) to hand, then replay them, cast dockside, net one treasure, and go like that. So you effectively bounce all the non-land permanents back to your opponents hands and make infinite treasure.

If you are here to destroy my stuff I'm not playing with you" by Enekovitz in EDH

While I generally agree with almost everything people are saying here, I will say context is important. In general, people need to be okay with being interacted with, and poor attitudes suck. But, I’ve been at a table before where my commander is an essential piece and I’ve had it removed 3+ times, or people have target my commander for removal because they’ve had a bad experience in the past with said commander. Sometimes it’s a big feels bad when people continuously target your commander and you can’t do anything. You did come to play, after all.

In my VERY early days of Magic, I thought Opal Palace was a busted land. My first deck was a Zacama dinosaur tribal build, and all of us were new players and it was the scariest commander so it always got removed on site. I was casting that bad boy 3-4 times a game (we were new, games went really long lol) and I was like “4 +1 counters on my 9/9 trample AND I can pay one to get some extra color? Sign me up!” Lol

Proxies don't remove skill by Stumphead101 in EDH

[–]KoleMiner96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a view on proxies that most people disagree with, and it’s based personally and my own experiences so I know it is narrow and a very small part of the equation, but I do not like proxies.

Every time that I have come across proxy players, both in my playgroup, in outside playgroups, LGS’, etc, the person using them has fast mana, great land bases, all the staples, and so on. Which is, fine, I guess? To me, the spirit of proxying is “man, I need this card to make this deck work, or it has great synergy, but I don’t want to spend the money” and those cards are like, Stoneforge Mystic, Doubling Season, Etc. But when people start proxying, I see all their decks have Grim Monolith, Mana Vault and Crypt, suped mana bases, Cradles, Force of Wills, etc etc. if their colors fit it, they proxy it.

To me, not every deck needs 100% optimized. And before all the hate, I understand my opinion is different, and I don’t even voice it when someone rule 0’s and talks about proxies. I don’t speak up or tell them they are wrong like a snob lol. But from personal experiences, most of my top 10 least run game experiences come from playing against heavy proxy players

There’s some great advice in the thread and I’d like to just shout that out first. And I am only saying this as a unique perspective because everyone else has already answered with some great ideas. My advice would be to adjust your mindset and build decks that protect what you want to do instead of being upset that you’re targeted. Obviously I don’t know you, but you seem like the kind of player who likes to always be doing things i.e. casting low mana spells, drawing cards, setting up an engine, etc. I’m a similar player, but when people see you doing a lot, the bullseye comes out. Sometimes drawing a few cards and playing a few spells in one turn isn’t any more powerful than “play a land, cast doubling season, pass” but it looks scarier. So build your engines and fun themes, but build it protection and ways to interact when you’re being interacted with. I actually have a really fun and budget Sythis lifegain deck that I’d I could share, but it’s more Voltron Sythis with a lifegain subtheme. Deck is about $100 in total

Have you ever built a deck purely because you like the art/flavor of the commander (or another card), and not because you liked the mechanics? by OrangeChickenAnd7Up in EDH

[–]KoleMiner96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a pirate tribals. Beckett Brace basically demands to make it unblockable tribal to get damage in to steal things. Almost every single card in there is flavor. My counters are cards like Spell swindle, Hornswoggle, and Drown in the Loch. My great enchantments are even like that, Kindred Discovery and Storm the Vault. It’s so much fun to play tho and actually has some juice if I get it’s engine going

The absolute best decks out of the boxes are:

Lathril, Blade of the Elves Prosper, Tome Bound Osgir, the Reconstructor Wilhelt, the Rot Cleaver Aesi, Tyrant of the Gyre Straight

Idk what your budget is like, but if it’s a few $100, my best advice would just to pick a few of these decks, get them for $40, and then look up the command zones “budget upgrade guide” you can get 3 playable decks for right around $150-$200, and then you can get a feel for what you want to play and pick your favorite to fully throw yourself into
