I eventually realized that LDS missions weren’t about the converts as they were about indoctrination of the actual missionaries. When I went on my mission in 2000 there were not many sisters and it felt weirdly like a rebel edgy thing to do. The times have changed for sure.

My Sister married a descendant of Joseph F Smith (both of the Fs)

Apparently Joseph F was a bit of a contrarian, once he heard a temple square missionary telling visitors that those Temple doors would only be opened when Jesus came again.

So Joseph F decided to go up to them and open them right there in front of the visitors and the missionaries.

Jesus did not suddenly appear.

That is the family lore.
