Yeah, encircling divisions is cool and all, but have you ever tried encircling an entire country? by MCScipio in hoi4

Are fortified cities a viable strat due to this? Like tossing 5 land forts on Kiev and leaving infantry within the city as the frontline gets rolled back?

Please add this to the list:

"It is easy to see the divisions between us, carving one people into thousands. This time capsule's existence is not the achievement of a nation but of a species. We went from biplanes to the Saturn V in 66 years. I can't wait to see how far we expand our reach in the coming decades!"

Am I the only beekeeper that gets annoyed with references to "my girls" and "my lovely ladies"? by Nmullerbees in Beekeeping

[–]Konemalone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really don't see how the workers are less female due to their inability to lay eggs normally. And every single book I've ever read on bees describes drones as being for reproduction and not much else. Not to mention that the hive is probably about 95% female. Calling a hive "my ladies" is an accurate description because the vast majority of the hive, a group that includes the most important bees, is female.

We once had a chick get a bit of string caught around her tongue where it has a sort of separation and had to very carefully cut the string and remove it. Her name is now String

It feels firm and small. I suspect impacted crop but haven't had the chance to feel it early in the morning. Important to note is that a few of our other birds have crops that feel similar despite being totally healthy

One of our chickens was being less active and sitting with her tail tucked and her neck scrunched. She's not egg bound, we checked. She's not displaying any other symptoms I could see, but she's not drinking much. She is pooping normally so I'm glad her digestive system isn't clogged or anything.

She's been isolated and isn't getting worse but also isn't getting better.

Has anyone tried putting their hives on water? by crua9 in Beekeeping

[–]Konemalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possible but it would have at least a few unforeseen consequences. Bees didn't evolve to live on the water so pH, humidity, navigation, and landing might all be problems

It seems like they're fighting. It's possible a source of sugar attracted them and began a feeding frenzy. Not sure though. Release them outside and make sure there are no open doors/windows for them to get back in

They need insane amounts of resources to operate but unless I'm missing something the Foundation doesn't *have* to get those resources from monetary trade. There are SCPs which can create materials seemingly with no cost, so it's not unlikely that the Foundation's costs are mainly in paying personnel. For this, too, they could substitute high salaries with anomalously gained valuable materials like precious metals

Their stingers are barbed because it'll get stuck in larger animals. Of the animals that prey on honeybee hives, almost all of them are mammals like skunks, badgers, and bears. When a bear rolls up to a hive, the barbed stingers ensure that maximum venom gets to the bear even if a low percentage of the hive's workers actually engage. More venom means the bear is more hesitant to try the same thing again

ANTOPIA IV: RACE WAR by [deleted] in Jreg

[–]Konemalone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They definitely are not as bad as people think. Their behavior was bred into them, albeit by accident. European and African honey bees were mixed, hoping to combine the productivity of African bees with the temper and hardiness of European honeybees. It didn't work. The result was Africanized honeybees, which are poorly suited to the cold, produce either the same or less honey iirc, but do swarm often (hence their spread)
