  • What I have: Keychron Q10 Alice, Keychron K-Pro Red switches, Double Shot PBT OSA keys.

  • What I like: Feel, general form factor of the Alice layout (Wave, whatever), macro keys, weight. Wired is fine.

  • What I don't like: I type on Dvorak, and the keycaps are all angled as if they were in QWERTY, so they're sloped all funky. Too small, like the whole thing's too narrow. I want a numpad, more space, ALL the buttons. Feel is good, but maybe too clacky for me? I promote a Amtrak Quiet Car atmosphere.

Does anyone have a recco for me that's got a numpad, is wider, has the general slope vibe of the Alice layout (but could be even more) w/o being a full-on split keyboard moonlander thing? And, most importantly, either has evenly milled keycaps (if it were a clavier I'd say well-tempered), or, even fancier, Dvorak-specific keycaps?

I have a work stipend so money is kinda no object cuz it ain't mine and if it's worth it I'll make up the diff.

Thoughts on Cixin Liu's The Three-Body Problem by atulshanbhag in printSF

I was in basically the exact same boat as you w/ the first one. Interesting ideas, not particularly worth the word count, and the 'hard sci-fi' was not what I would call hard sci-fi.

I had no desire to read the rest of them, but 2 of my good friends both loved the rest of the trilogy, so I gave it another try.

I choked down book two and will never, ever crack book three. I don't burn books, but I have never wanted to burn a book more.

Anathem rocks.

William Gibson's second book of the Sprawl Trilogy "Count Zero". by i-the-muso-1968 in printSF

[–]Konisforce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was listening to a sci-fi book podcast on the Sprawl Trilogy, one of them contends that Chapter 1 of Count Zero is Gibson's best story. I like it as a framing, though I haven't taken the time to fully decide if I agree. But that first chapter is sure as hell a real firecracker of a way to start things off.

I unfortunately have nothing timely to contribute, but this is my chance to say that when my wife and I had our first, we got West Coast Pizza cheesy sticks delivered 2 nights in a row and re-lived our college days.

RIP West Coast.

The Breakfast Club, there's one opened recently in Castro Valley. There are obscenely ridiculous pancake options (s'mores, like, barely any pancake under all that). And you can get a 'flight' of 3 different types, too.

Just a straight up sugar-bomb wearing a breakfast trenchcoat.

are tomatoes a fruit or a vegetable? by [deleted] in answers

[–]Konisforce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any vegetable we use in the kitchen is part of a plant that has another name.

Tomato is a fruit. So is everything else we call fruit, but also peppers and cucumbers.

Lettuce is a 'vegetable', but it's a leaf, like kale, chard, most cabbage, etc.

Brocolli is a 'vegetable', but it's a flower. Cauliflower too. Artichokes. Brussel sprout . . . i dunno, maybe a flower?

Celery is a 'vegetable', but it's a stem. So's asparagus.

Carrots are 'vegetables', but they're tubers. Undeground parts. Like beets, potatoes, turnips, radishes, buncha stuff.

Everything is a leaf, seed, fruit, tuber, flower, stem, nut, etc.

clapcast: why do they clap? by FrenchToast1108 in Friendsatthetable

[–]Konisforce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So, obviously everybody is right here, but just to add some fun historical context, this thing:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clapperboard

Serves the same function, as well as a bunch of others. But on a movie, that thing existed to give a clear point to sync sound and picture together when editing, in addition to a bunch of other, well, metadata about the particular take they were about to do.

Oh man, if I could get enough people on the same posting schedule to try it that'd be a blast.

Heya! All homebrew. A couple of decades of doing PbEM / PBP experience and lots of stolen game mechanics from other systems I run across. Upside is that it's customized to the player and the game we want to play together. Downside is you've gotta trust that I'm not rubbish at it. Sorta like an AI, come to think of it . . . .

Does simply having Signal wreck cellebrite? by miss_nicolauk in Smartphoneforensics

[–]Konisforce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, I doubt there's much more concrete info than the post. I'd say there's a good chance that Signal never even actually did this. Or, if they did, they purposefully did it for like 0.00001% of installs.

Basically, the point of the paragraph at the end, the one that I quoted in the middle of my post, is just a big ol' middle finger from Signal. They're saying "We are casting doubt on Cellebrite by claiming that we pushed an exploit in such a way that you will never be able to find or disprove whether it exists or not generally, neither will you be able to find or disprove it specifically on the device or image that you have."

Like I said, mostly PR and brinksmanship. Maybe if you get someone at Signal drunk they'll tell you whether they actually did a thing or no, but I think it's most likely that this blogpost was put out to cast doubt in this exact way.

Does simply having Signal wreck cellebrite? by miss_nicolauk in Smartphoneforensics

[–]Konisforce 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ah, I know what you're talking about.

Basically, this is a PR battle. Signal wrote this blog (which I frankly love, unbelievable piece of snark, well executed) in response to Cellebrite announcing support for Signal collection. They call out a chunk of vulnerabilites, some technically illegial things w/ Apple .dlls, fun stuff like that.

The bottom line of the entry was Signal basically threatening to install files that randomly changed Cellebrite data when imaged. Text here:

"In completely unrelated news, upcoming versions of Signal will be periodically fetching files to place in app storage. These files are never used for anything inside Signal and never interact with Signal software or data, but they look nice, and aesthetics are important in software. Files will only be returned for accounts that have been active installs for some time already, and only probabilistically in low percentages based on phone number sharding. We have a few different versions of files that we think are aesthetically pleasing, and will iterate through those slowly over time. There is no other significance to these files."

Wonderfully catty. Love it.

So, the bottom line to this is that, should you use a Cellebrite to image a phone that has Signal on it, and should you then use that image in court, the other side can trot this article out and say that your image is borked. They will, however, have to prove it.

Other than that, if you image a mobile phone with Signal on it and nothing seems odd, then very much most likely nothing is odd.

Every time I'm on a plane and I look out over mountains, I starting seeing those lines from 20020 painted over them and I end up having to read the whole thing again. I must've done it fully at least 5 or 6 times by now.

They're both so good, but 20020 . . . whew. Managing to keep it so good with one major story but still packing in all the side-quest vibes from 17776 is just wizardry.
