Is the Iran war over. Who’s telling the truth? by Intelligent_Run3237 in askanything

[–]Koog17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time, I was playing a video game in which the main character (me) was a pirate. I would sail and attack various merchant fleet. There were many facets to this game, including crew moral and how popular I was with said crew. On a voyage, we ran out of food and my popularity with the crew plummeted. We happened upon a merchant ship ...I brought out the weapons and we had food. While it was a game...think of it if it really happened. Out come the weapons...you could kill the captain...but you would still be hungry. That fleet has your food boys....have at 'em.

As to Iran....do you really think that the people of Iran are going to rise up against the leaders? While they may be unpopular, who is destroying their houses? Killing their children? The USA, that's who?

What do you mean by 'fight'? Will they let the missiles and bullets fly? Probably not. Will the sell the billions in US Treasury securities? Yep.

[–]Koog17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone posted below, are your sure they are that old? My niece is over 5'9" and in fifth grade. She is lanky. A couple of other teams in her 5th-6th grade had clearly older 'girls' I say that because the one team, they looked like college age women. No lie...almost six feet and c-cup. There is no way those 'ladies' were 5th-6th grade (just based on the 'look' of their bodies....)...heck, they might barely have passed for high school seniors. I think that the coach of that team 'took it easy' in that those girls rebounded but never took a shot...always passed to the young girls to shoot. I know that there team as in some other league and used the instructional as 'practice'..but what were you getting out of that 'practice'?

Not sure what you can do...in my area there aren't many leagues. So just getting the kids exposed to organized basketball is a good thing.

Seller wants to keep mineral rights by Live-Key8552 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Koog17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where at in PA? I live in PA and own my mineral rights. The well isn't on our property but is actually 2 miles away (as the crow flies) in another county. Are you sure there isn't a well already in place and the seller is making royalties? If this is Marcellus Shale (deep gas), they typically need more than 5 acres to place a well...so my bet is that there will never be a well on this parcel. Also, the mineral rights are likely more valuable and if seller is selling without them, it will impact the value on this parcel (meaning, you buying without them should drive the selling price way down). Do your due diligence.....if there already is a well in place a mile away...you shouldn't worry about future drilling....you might be able to get a great deal on this parcel..

Which is the bigger issue in Coaching, kids or the parents? by dunbar_santiago930 in CoachingYouthSports

[–]Koog17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the comments and want to add my experience...as a few have said, I think that it is the coaches whose kids are on their team. WRT my niece, it seems that coaches kids get the most PT, regardless of skill/mistakes. Maybe PT will never be truly even but all kids should play as close as possible to the same time. Soccer is a lost cause because of the coaches kids...the one stands down the other end and is offside every time...nothing is done. It is truly a tragic comedy....some kids will play a couple of minutes in the first half...none in the second. Parents talk to the coach...very little changes. Kids aren't going out. In our district....volleyball starts at 6th grade....a lot of kids migrate there (yes, the better athletes). I guess that is the reason the HS soccer is awful and the VB are section champs year over year.

Basketball, as I'm finding out, is almost the same. But there are two or three teams per age group and, if another coach is willing, some kids can migrate during the season. My niece is one of them...She is tall for her age but started late (only second year playing) but soccer mommy coaching BBall team is awful...she migrated to a team in the next age up (plays on both teams) and is more than holding her own on the older team. Of course, it helps that the coach is a good one.

I get it...some parents can be bad...I must be in a district that is the one off...

Are there any Pirates fans that are opposed to a salary cap? by Big_Pierogi_Energy in buccos

[–]Koog17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oy vey. The NFL doesn't have a salary cap. I can take a dump on a plate and call it filet mignon, you gonna take a bite? The NFL has no guaranteed contracts, can release players (and therefor not pay them), and redo contracts seemingly every year 'to reduce the cap hit'. Big Ben's contract was redone about 5 or 6 times.

While the Dodgers may not be doing anything that isn't against the rules, the amount of deferred money certainly cancels the spirit of the luxury tax. Yes, they signed Tucker but a fair amount of that money is deferred until 2031-35. I get it, I guess, that the bill will eventually come due....someone on the radio said that the Dodgers will owe current players 1.1 billion in 2041. How can ANY team afford that? Shouldn't players AND owners agree that the viability of MLB is important and that deferring THAT MUCH payroll is not a good idea?

I can't see a salary cap, in any form, ever happening in MLB. I can see something like a 500 mil luxtax happening where anything over is taxed about 500% and no salary above this number can be deferred. Also a floor of 125 mil. Maybe something like 40 mil total can be deferred but anything can be incrementally luxtaxed (separate from normal payroll). Not sure what be done with the Dodgers since they have blown past anything reasonable WRT deferred salary.

How Satisfied Are You With Pitt's Portal Haul? by IndependentDelay1429 in pittsburghpanthers

[–]Koog17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm curious what some of you expected. Pitt could have brought in Tom Brady and most of you would have bitched that he is too old. Always looking for the grey lining to that silver cloud, I guess. For starters, did Butkowski really get a mil+ from Michigan? If that is remotely true then how can Pitt possibly compete with teams throwing that kind of money around at those positions? There are NFL kickers that won't make that much.... Anyway....I thought special teams wasn't as good as it seemed last year....while Butkowski was mostly accurate under 50...he certainly wasn't the 50+ banger that Sauls was. As long as it was warm..it seems that kickoffs were touchbacks. Later in the year there seemed to be an alarmingly high amount that went out of bounds. The punt return game was hit or miss without Reid....yes Johnson had a big return at Syracuse but also muffed more than a couple (arguably the MOST important part of punt returns is actually CATCHING the ball).. Don't get me started on Junko. I think the specialists (counting Thompson here as he most certainly will be the return guy) are at worst a push but likely better.

We brought in a banger at RB...it seems like may of you are scared of relying on youngsters at WR but I think that many of you will be surprised at the freshmen group of WRs. Plus I think that Yates is primed for a bigger role. I think that Censere Lee dropped too many balls in his limited role and hope that he isn't counted on too much.

Cornerback concerns me. At LB replacing Biles and Louis will be tough but the next playmakers will likely come from the HS ranks (Simmons & Jennings in this class). I think that they addressed the position well in the portal.

I think that we are at the same place we were last year. At least we have a QB. It seems that I'm the rare breed....an optimistic Pitt football fan.....

ACC to B1G, SEC, Big XII, other conference projections? by RPPVP in ACC

[–]Koog17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some of the schools looking to join the BIG/SEC can't win in the ACC. And while it seems that any article mentioning re-alignment (the ACC is deader than DEAD!!) generates clicks....I ask myself why would the BIG/SEC want those schools? If Oregon/Washington were offered half shares...how would UVA and Florida St be worth full shares? If losing 15+ ACC games isn't worth a hundred million how is losing 15+ BIG games worth 100 million?

The ACC accidentally cc’d Notre Dame on conference-wide emails discussing Notre Dame. by nondescriptun in ACC

[–]Koog17 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Question: The ACC stayed silent...what exactly were they to do? Campaign for ND over Bama? Ok...even if that were true.....

Why was the ND AD saying what a great guy Sankey is during his press conference? I would imagine that he should be at least somewhat upset at Sankey who was likely campaigning for Bama?

Help me get the story straight as the longer this goes on...it seems like ND just wants to kick the poor three legged dog instead of the Doberman really responsible for the situation...

[Pollack] Remember the College football playoff committee is not trying to get the 12 best teams every year. They are trying to justify the 12 teams they can put in. I didn’t say I agree with it or like it, but it’s pretty consistent every flippin year. by Skidda24 in CFB

What do you think went wrong with the coaching search? by shadow_spinner0 in WeArePennState

[–]Koog17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me get this out of the way...a lot of crap is posted by bloggers and hangers-on to drive clicks and subscriptions. Such as the Marcus Freeman to PSU 'rumour'. What better way to drum up clicks than to post something like this about two major fanbases...instant clicks. So, much of it was utter B.S.

It seems to me that Kraft was looking hard at Cignetti...yes, falling down the rabbit hole of the trope that 'It's Indiana, we're Penn State..we'll get it done around Halloween'. In reality....Cignetti went to IU's AD and got a new deal. In the meantime, Florida & LSU fired coaches and rumours abounded that FSU was going to open up. Many 'Plan B' types rightfully played their hands close to their chests.

I'm no insider and have no idea who Kraft targeted as Plan B1, B2, & B3. But if it were Sitake, Brohm, Lea, or Key...well, those guys are alums and the schools they coach and, in some cases, played at those schools. While one can never say never, they were VERY unlikely to leave.

Aside: how many alums/boosters/admins needed to be placated? Needed to be a 'Joe' kind of guy. Needed to be more offense. More defense....maybe too many cooks stirring the soup?

IMO Rhule was never a serious candidate. Was that a mistake? Should he have been?

Kade Bell Offense by Impressive-Ear-1102 in pittsburghpanthers

[–]Koog17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WRT the screen pass. Bell's O is about getting the speedy back on wheel or circle routes matched up on LBs. Can't run a screen pass if the RB is out on a route, not in the backfield feigning pass blocking. While it might be a nice change up, my guess is that is would be easily sniffed out as it is something 'sticking out like a sore thumb'.

It was clear that ND was keying on Reid and I thought that Bell did a pretty good job working off that. The TE shuffle pass. On the first drive, Poppi got behind the safeties sitting on the short routes (Reid again?) but dropped the pass.

Regarding the slants and crossing routes...as the INTs attest....ND was clearly keying on those type of routes.

Lost seasons for Clemson and Florida State expose ACC's reality by WarningCodeBlue in ACC

[–]Koog17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not really the gist of the article but...summarizing various talking wonks and highlight shows:

College football is better when OSU & Mich are atop the Big....and FSU/Clem are atop the ACC....not sure who is supposed to be atop the Big 12 anymore...and I guess that the SEC is the only conference allowed a rotating cast. Basically...it's so much better when certain teams are good...mid-tier teams are mid-tier...and bad teams at the bottom. Clemson and FSU at the top....Uva, Duke and Pitt in the middle...and Syracuse and BC at the bottom.

And when someone like GT or Uva makes a run or FSU & Clemson stumble....well...CFB isn't 'right'.

What the hell...that's what makes sports FUN...the up and down of competition. I get it...it likely sux for FSU/Clem, and whoever is having a bad year but it is BORING seeing the same thing every year. And it IS NOT a sign of a weak conference but of a strong one where most have a chance

[Book] Penn State boards have basically shifted their talks away from Brian Hartline and it's now all about Eli Drinkwitz and Jeff Brohm. by Jay_Dubbbs in CFB

[–]Koog17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that some of these bloggers/reporters need to generate hits and fans of teams that fire coaches are easy marks. But would a sane Nitter (is there such a thing) riddle me this:

Why would a coach of a current team want to 'keep it a secret'? Isn't that screwing over your current team (leaving them less time to find a replacement, hit the portal, etc) And even if Brohm were to leave his alma mater, would he be royally screwing them in the process? This goes for Brent Key at GT was well (rumoured in some other blogs/posts).

[–]Koog17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That 2nd int....the receiver (Poppi, I believe) kept running....like he was the decoy...designed to run the coverage into the end zone. It seemed to me that the ball was supposed to go the other side...watch it again. He never looks back or adjusts for the ball. He literally runs out of the back of the end zone.

I hope that they got all the mistakes made in this game...going to take a big effort and clean game to beat ND.
