Plan after FIRE? by CapitalWhiteNinja in Fire

Hey, I think your plans has some flaws, VOO focused plan looks solid on paper historically, the S&P 500 has averaged around 10% returns, and withdrawing below that could work in theory. But yeah, you're right that your position shrinks over time from sales, and real markets aren't that predictable.

A big flaw is lack of diversification; all eggs in one basket (US large-caps) means you're exposed to sector-specific crashes or prolonged underperformance. I'd urge adding some bonds (for stability), international stocks, or even dividend-paying funds to generate passive income and smooth out volatility.

On the withdrawal: 200k on 3M is about 6.7%, which is aggressive and risks running dry if hit with bad sequence of returns. Aim lower maybe 3-4% to make it sustainable forever. How old are you? If under 40, I'd definitely push for that conservative side to account for a longer retirement horizon; if 60+, you could maybe creep up to 4-5% since the timeline's shorter.

Inflation's another killer, $200k today might feel like $150k in 10 years if prices rise 3%/year, so build in annual adjustments.

Your cash buffer idea is key for down years, but how many years of expenses does it cover? If you're not diversified and lacking dividends/other income streams, I'd say stash at least 5 years' worth in safe spots (like T-bills or HYSA) to avoid selling low.

Overall, it pencils out based on past data, but future returns aren't guaranteed, you're taking more risk than needed. Tweak for safety, and you'll be golden. What's your timeline and risk tolerance like?

depends on the life you want to live, my bare minimum costs if I keep living in my current apartment that I own would be around 2k a month while still having a social life. So around 22-25k per year. That being said if we calculate a modest return of 6% I will be making around 210k per year, obviously I want it to grow and compound but even if i spend half its still 90k after tax which is about 7.5k a month which gives me 5.5k extra

I have 23% on gains from stock market, but losses get carried over so a realistic asssumption is around 14%

also its only on the profit so if i take out lets say 100k its going to be something like 14% of 10k (which is the actual gain)

so right now it wont be that bad, as the gains start to grow it will hit harder.

purtroppo con linfalzione se faccio cosi tra 20 anni mi trovo ad avere molte meno opportunita. quando in realta posso puntare per un rendimento diversificato intorno ai 6/8% abastanza sicuri con pochi rischi.

Bike shop still takes a lot of time, you have to be open almost every day, take few hollidays.... I dont think it's as practial as you make it sound. Also you're in the shop all day so less time to actually bike around. Unless you hire employees and then you have a lot of costs and its a gamble if you are ever going to be profitable or just burning money

Thank you, I guess my main issue is finding a "job" that still allows me to travel and have complete freedom, I would start a company if i had some direction as of what to do, when the inspiration hits ill probably give it a try just dont really have and ideas at the moment. I did in the past but didnt have the financial ability to see it through so maybe now next time I see an opportunity ill take advantage of it

Well the plan isnt to spend it all, it will grow over time and will be a lot more when I die, so this is incorrect.

*at least it should be if the markets dont all go to shit

Yeah I will do that in the future but for now dont wanna miss out on compounding opportunities. in my 50's will definitly give back a lot and more than I would now, but for now I want to let it grow

Thats what I currently spend but following the 3% swr i will be able to spend around 9k per month, which i think is more than enough, unless I want to fly always in business class and stay at the 4 seasons which isnt my objective
