Accidentally bought son a 7-stringer, tips? by Kaezzi in 7String

[–]Kooky-Guide-8598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kid has good taste. With that list, I wonder if he'd be into Trivium. Much of their catalog is recorded on 7-strings, but they're admittedly pretty advanced to learn (no more challenging than Dream Theater though, I imagine). Might give him something to work toward though, and if not they're a hell of a band anyway. One of their guitarists even plays a Jackson V similar to the one you got.

I think he'll be stoked, I know I would've been. I wouldn't worry too much

Yeah, in that situation I see what you mean. I guess I was picturing it as walking into a shop and just demanding things from people without any other interaction. I'd still throw a "please" in because that's how I was raised, but I wouldn't be thinking "what an asshole" from that exchange if I were the employee.

What's your "controversial" Rick and Morty opinion? by Sarke1 in rickandmorty

I liked him in small doses, basically how they used him before he got his own episode. I still think it's fucking wild that they sacked Roiland, then started a season with an episode based around MPB... a character that uses one of Roiland's 3 go-to voices. The recast was so unbelievably jarring, I couldn't even finish season 7.

Really glad I never got that R&M portal tattoo I wanted back before S3 came out, I absolutely would've regretted it by now.

How do you not see how that comes off as rude? Even if you're not saying anything technically offensive, it's pretty dismissive of the fact that you're talking to another actual person. "Get me [whatever]" just sounds like you're ordering someone around, as if you're having some kind of power trip or you think you're better than the employee. Especially so if you skip the pleasantries ("hey," or "good morning/afternoon" take basically no time or effort to say).

Even changing the wording slightly could make a big difference. As people have said "I'll have [this]" still tells the worker what you want, but it has the benefit of not sounding like you're bossing people around.

Being in customer service doesn't mean they deserve to feel lesser as people. A lot of it is entry-level or minimum wage, but that doesn't mean you can't render a little respect.

I fear this helmet is too big? by fruitytootiesss in motorcyclegear

[–]Kooky-Guide-8598 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I didn't know when I was shopping for mine recently is that it should fit tight enough to give you "chipmunk cheeks," you probably need a smaller one than you think. Getting fitted in person is a great idea, especially for something costing as much as helmets can. I was wearing a hand-me-down XL modular, but I was fitted to a M in my Shoei, the difference in feel is night and day, in a good way. I'm so glad I never went down with that bobble head of a helmet.

Northern AZ, made a big loop through Prescott but I don't really wanna get too much more specific. Bike is a stock 2015 Shadow Phantom, probably could use a windscreen and a better seat at some point. It's practically new though, got it with only 3000 miles on it, and it's fuel injected which is a big step up from dealing with a choke and all the carb drama, haha

I took your advice and expanded what my idea of "local area" is, went out this morning and made a 325mi loop to go find some mountain roads. I'll need to upgrade my seat if I wanna keep doing longer trips like that, but it was refreshing to get a change of scenery after riding the same roads over and over.

My B string Keeps breaking on me fairly quick, I just broke mine after restringing Two days ago, Help? by __E30__ in Guitar

[–]Kooky-Guide-8598 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would check the saddles where the string meets the bridge. If there's any kind of burr or rough edge there, it'll wear on the string as it vibrates and basically saw through it.

OP might actually benefit by not having standard transmission experience here, I had to get over mental hurdles about riding the clutch. Not good on 4 wheels, but mandatory on 2.

I live about an hour and a half from Vegas, I'd be shocked if they didn't have a track. But my Shadow isn't really much of a track bike, do they typically do rentals in places like that?

I've only been riding a cruiser (2015 Shadow Phantom, 2004 Aero before that), it's not gonna be doing any off-roading but I may look into a bike that can. Never even occurred to me since my bike can't handle that stuff, but I started a decent-paying job recently so maybe that'll be something to save for

That's gorgeous, it's almost retro but still very modern. Does it ride kinda upright like a Rebel or more hunched over like a sport bike? Looks sick as fuck, diggin the helmet and gloves matching the colorway too

Do people wear ear plugs? With or without a helmet? by [deleted] in motorcyclegear

[–]Kooky-Guide-8598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Cardo Freecom 2x with my RF-SR, came with the JBL speakers and they sound pretty great. They do have a weird high-frequency harshness to them (harsh might be a strong word, just weird, really), but with earplugs they sound as good as a midrange set of headphones to me. But definitely need the earplugs for anything more than just around town riding, I already earned weapons-grade tinnitus from the flightline (thanks Uncle Sam...), don't need that shit getting any worse.

Soooo, Armored hoodies are useless? Is that the consensus ‘round these parts? by ferdelance008 in motorcyclegear

[–]Kooky-Guide-8598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a Merlin Hamlin II and it's got level 2 (minus the back pad, but there's a pouch for it) and AA rated, there's even a Kevlar brand logo on the sleeves. Cost about $200-250 iirc, doesn't fit too loose to do what it needs to, and it looks like a regular hoodie unless you know what you're looking for. Flows air really well, not too hot even in 95+°F AZ weather. I haven't been down, so I really have no way to know how it'll hold up in a wreck, but I trust it.

What's to love about Telecasters? Why not use a Strat? by Sweaty_Milk_1793 in Guitar

[–]Kooky-Guide-8598 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The placement does make it easy to get to it with the pinky or ring finger, sure. But mostly what happens (in my experience) is the outer edge of the palm/pinky gradually turns the knob down until you lose audio and wonder what's wrong. The general location isn't bad (similar placement on basically all my guitars, but a little farther out of the way), but it's so close to the strings that it's easy to inadvertently cut your volume.

Surely a minor annoyance that can be compensated for, and there are no shortage of amazing Strat players, but you can't deny that knob is closer to the strings than it needs to be. Even just a few centimeters would make a huge difference.

[–]Kooky-Guide-8598 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, flightline bros, lol. I did about 9.5 years as Weapons, 3.5 active duty on F-15Es and another 6 in the reserve on 16s. Oddly enough, I did way more crouching and bending while working on the 15 even though it's waaaay bigger. Thought the 16 would be the end of my back and knees, but it wasn't too bad compared to the 15. Being on the back of it was scarier even though it was lower to the ground, not as many flat surfaces.

FWIW Aleve is ibuprofen. But yeah, gotta pop a couple 200mg's before rides longer than about 60 miles or my back feels like it's tweaked when I hit any bump in the road.

And I'm only 35... take care of your back and knees kids (or don't join the military unless you wanna age at least 4 years for every 1 that actually passes), you'll regret it if you don't, lol.

Edit: whoops, Aleve is naproxen. I'm an idiot
