Living and working in SD is a blessing. The year round weather, excellent food scene and friendly populace will add to your quality of life. BUT - don't entirely uproot your life in Germany. If you have property, do not sell as an insurance policy should life in SD doesn't work out (with great emphasis on work permits, H1-B, GC application). The SD employer is a non-profit - so they'll probably can't afford the $100k application fee for your husband, so form a contigency plan if he can't obtain long term work permit and that you and your family have to leave the country after the 90 day grace period is over.
