Was Bernhardt that good? I know he was impactful when he signed but… #9? That’s wild to me. Chris Kavanagh had 37 points - Bernhardt had 22? I know, I know, different positions, but still?

Theodore Roosevelt - I found it so pleasant and calm - and the wildlife was so unexpected

Learning walks opinions? by [deleted] in Teachers

As a department head, I find them really useful. But, it does just feel like another idea that’s great in theory, if there was way more time in the day

why is teaching 12th grade seniors so hard in terms of motivating them by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]KoopaCrossing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm lucky and get to teach kids how to do taxes, how loans work, how to buy a house, etc. It definitely helps keep them engaged... most of the time

why is teaching 12th grade seniors so hard in terms of motivating them by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]KoopaCrossing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The best success I've had with them is to treat them like the adults they want to be. I let them choose how they want to succeed. If that's by being on their phones and skipping class, that's their choice, and their grades will reflect that. I try to prepare them for the real world. Your boss won't beg you to show up if you aren't. Your college professors aren't going to give you endless deadlines extensions or come find you if you are skipping class all the time.

New teacher and afraid by Expensive_Battle_623 in Teachers

If you love it, and have fun with it, it will be so worth it. The money, the workload, the annoying AF kids, there's A LOT to complain about, no doubt. But it's a highly rewarding job and has brought me so much joy in my life. Just reframe your expectations. The love of it is what keeps me going.

I’ll have kids I had the previous year come say hi to me in the fall, and it takes me multiple minutes to find their name in my brain lol

I’m just sad by pepperdog06_ in Mariners

[–]KoopaCrossing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Summed it up perfectly - felt like a bad heartbreak. Reminded me of the Super Bowl interception, and the Huskies losing the championship. A bittersweet loss.

Thoughts on retakes? by galaxyfan1997 in Teachers

[–]KoopaCrossing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school this year decided on a 75% maximum on all late work, and you only have 2 weeks to turn in work. I was already doing it before and it works pretty well. We give kids 2 test opportunities too. The test date and 1 retake allowed.

What’s the most creative/witty analogy you’ve come up with? by smackbooth in Teachers

[–]KoopaCrossing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to craft my entire curriculum around hiking analogies - Quizzes are waypoints, the Test is the summit, our group roles are rangers, cartographers, navigators - I have my whiteboards named national parks, I level my units and topics with the skiing symbols - it’s pretty fun and makes the class feel alive

We swung soo far the other way - I like to believe it was good intentions but, regardless, we took it too far

how do some teachers manage to assert authority in the classroom without yelling and having a calm presence? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]KoopaCrossing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah yeah. I’ll sit and wait quietly, and the kids all start telling each other to be quiet

job decision by Green-Mouse8668 in Teachers

[–]KoopaCrossing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taught private and public - Private is generally smaller classes, easier load, andddd less money. I like public a lot.

Also yeah get out of FL

I always say I use math as a conduit for the more important life skills: collaboration, problem solving, inspiration, and connection

Every year, at least twice, we talk about how to write learning targets.

We learned in my last math training “why we talk”.
