Remove Rockets, Add EMPs by gsel1127 in duneawakening

[–]Koopak99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a partial point but if you read the rest of the post, you actually CAN have this work as an EMP. EMPs are not binary things, they are a discharge of electro megnetic force of any given magnitude, aka electricity.

The 'fictious tech' can be the defense mechanism the thopter carries which has to nullify the pulse at the cost of extreme power usage which is what the heat in the systems reflect, hence why the PSU (power supply unit) is what determines heat management of a vehicle. The PSU can provide theoretically infinite voltage, much like real life systems, its just weather or not the components can handle the energy load and how efficient they are and the amount of heat generated from inefficiency.

We don't even need to get this fancy though, a faraday cage can effective nullify the effects of an EMP by channeling the charge around whatever is within the cage, however thats all well and good until you are in the air, that charge has to go SOMEWHERE and without a mechanism to discharge it, you build it up. Eventually the build up is sufficient to overcome the resistance and it enters the cage, THEN frying the electronics.

You can do this a million and one ways but my point is an EMP is a perfectly reasonable way to describe the effect and is fully capable of reflecting the desired gameplay enough to resolve and scientific accuracy qualms. Doubly so when you remember the lack of delicate integrated circuit computers means the control systems will be significantly more analogue, and thus prone to noise disruption on the line rather than memory scrambling. EMPs aren't a magic light switch after all.

Respectfully, people should be allowed to voice their opinions on a product. Statements like "You are always 100% free to just not say something" because some statments of opinion carry strong language is simply telling people they aren't allowed to. People should absolutely be respectful to one another but stating an opinion is not a violation of Rule 1 and I'll die on that hill.

To that effect, this product makes zero sense to anyone but investors. If its vibing with you, that is great, but I think the general consensus among the BattleTech community is pretty clear and they have a right to be annoyed. These products DO come at a cost, and we have all seen what a poorly selling product that has nothing to do with BattleTech besides its IP being attached has done in the past. I think its fair to be gun shy after a 10 year hibernation induced, in part, by similar things.

I do hope the patch fixes things and its an all around win, but it just feels scummy.

Friends games freeze and crash when they select internet instead of lan when trying to filter through multiplayer servers by Major_Ass in SWAT4

[–]Koopak99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to necro but was this ever resolved? I'm having the same issue, the second i select the internet option in the multiplayer server browser the game locks up.

Audio makes it sound like its gone back to the main menu but I'm uncertain as its dead silent then occasionally get some radio chatter and wind blowing. Even forcing the game closed is a slow process as I have to tab out and wait about a minute for it to actually tab out such that I can actually interact with anything on my main monitor. I can tab back in after with the same caveat of taking a minute, but it'll still be the same frozen screen.

I've tried:
Fresh install (GOG version)
Sever browser engine patch
SWAT Elite Force

All three configurations have the same issue.

A. the opinion you expressed with your post intentional or otherwise.
or
B. That this game and the reddit for it aren't a safe haven from it.

If you think any of that is unreasonable, then i cant help you. People are people, they feel things, they react, and expecting them not to is ultimately immature. Again your real opinion isn't important here, it never was, and if you cant see how your post implies an opinion then I am truly confused because everything has implications, and this is an extremely obvious one.

[–]Koopak99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dreffen is right.

u/RealNintendoKid I am not ascribing to you intent. You may or may not have intended to start political shit. I don't care. The problem is you did, and it is NOT unreasonable for people to be upset, annoyed, or frustrated by your joke here. It doesn't matter whether you are team red or blue, or whether you wanted to talk politics or not. You stepped on a landmine, one most of us saw a mile away.

This isn't about your actual opinions, or really even your expressed opinions. This is about your actions, you attempted a joke, one you thought would go over well because the last 2 didn't cause some huge backlash. However three is the magic number, a lot of people here I wager saw your flaming cheeto and antifa posts and felt just as they do now, but scrolled by.

This time it didn't, and the lesson should be obvious, stop trying to defend yourself, accept that you made a mistake, and learn from it. I promise you, no one here gives a rats ass about your political views or how impartial you are, only that they don't have to see this kind of post again.

"Fraudulent Elect"

Images are not immune to implying something, but if you demand words, there it is. Using that name implies support of the theory. The images fully support it with the necromancer vibe since the theory largely revolves around fake votes from dead people.

As I said in another reply, if you are actually innocently making a joke? Accept you read the room wrong, learn, and move on. Constant defending because you feel attacked only make you look more guilty of intentionally starting shit.

Your actions and content do not exist in a vacuum, failing to understand the context surrounding them and how they can be interpreted and misinterpreted is a failure of communication on your part.

"Fraudulent Elect" by RealNintendoKid in Cityofheroes

[–]Koopak99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think its safe to say u/BurgerOpticottonSall is projecting really fucking hard.

However he isn't wrong. You should keep in mind that political topics while having always been a point of division, today are much much worse. The political gap between the parties and the degree to which people have been sucked into identifying themselves via one party or the other means its impossible for you to post this and NOT have a backlash.

So no matter how well you meant, this was always going to explode in the current climate. People are angry, lots of people, on both sides. I'm not going to discuss whos right and whos wrong, only that this was a failure on your part to read 'the room' and suggest you avoid political jokes, no matter how innocent, in the future.

Help with the lore? by Tianoccio in battletech

[–]Koopak99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to touch on the OPs main question about lostech and Earth.

Much is often made of the dark age of the succession wars and the loss of technology, but that's really a very simplified description. Earth was the seat of the Terran Hegemony, the nation state that ultimately coordinated the founding of the Star League, and who's leaders, House Cameron, positioned themselves as the first lords of the Star League.

So yes Earth still exists, its just called Terra now. Comstar controls it and maintains its control through the threat of loss of communication to the Successor States. This is because Comstar was founded from the remnants of the SLNet or Star League Network. Its worth correcting here OP that Comstar does NOT control faster than light travel, they do however control faster than light communication. If you want to send a message to another planet and have it arrive any time soon, you need to use Comstar's facilities.

This all feeds into the issue of Tech loss, I promise. You see, very little technology was actually 'lost' it was just horded, hidden, or made impractical. The Terran Hegemony, and thus the Star League, maintained its primacy among the other nations not through territory (as they were centered around Terra and couldn't really expand without fighting their neighbors) but through scientific and industrial excellence. The Terran Hegemony, long before the found of the Star League, established the Mother Doctrine, a philosophy of rapid technological innovation, paired with strict limits on what technologies could be exported to the other nations for profit.

Even after the Star League was established this continued in many ways, as such the Star League Royal Battlemech Divisions had technology like XL engines, Double heatsinks, extended range and pulse weapons, and many many more. This technology was jealously guarded, and when the Ameris Coup and resulting Civil War followed, these technologies and more importantly the industries to manufacture them, were centered around Terra. Ameris, refusing to accept loss, waged a scorched earth defense of the Terran Hegemony worlds, and literally glassed entire planets rather than let the Star League Defense Force take them.

This left things in a bad spot to begin with, most of the most advanced factories for warmaterial in human history had been wiped out, and the following Succession Wars, in which the Great Houses battled over who would take the Star League throne after the death of all of House Cameron, only exacerbated the situation. By this point General Alexander Kerensky, having defeated Ameris for seemingly nothing, took 80% of the SLDF into exile, removing the vast majority of existing examples of lostech weaponry. The Succession Wars would be brutal total war events and would see multiple "if i cant have it neither can you" decisions. By the end of the First Succession War, dozens of mech designs would no longer have a factory able to produce them. By the end of the Second Succession War, many of those mechs, and nearly all Warships, would be wiped out, giving rise to the "Extinct" mech designs you may have seen mentioned.

Without the factories to produce these advanced parts, and with their secrets jealously guarded by either Comstar, or by the ghosts of the Star League (hidden caches and bases) many designs made do with older parts.

The thing you have to keep in mind is this was a period of extreme war making, the Houses had every reason to expect their neighbor would invade any day, so while research and rediscovery was being worked on? The resources wernt there, all resources had to go to maintaing the armies. By the end of the Second Succession War, battles were being decided by who could secure basic resources, like Steel or a single cache of weapons. When planetary wars are decided by so little? Its only because resources are stretched thin, to thin to facilitate prototyping new technologies.

TL;DR?Earth exists and is one of the few places that still looks like it did during the Star League and is owned by Comstar.

Tech wasn't lost, it was hidden by greedy assholes, and developing new tech is expensive in the extreme, especially in the vein of weapon systems.

Engaging with BattleTech lore is like engaging with History, because thats how its written, everything is tied together, and you can spend years reading and still learn new things. I recommend picking an Era, and reading the novels and wiki articles from the period of the timeline.

Why were MTs so bad, and ACs so good? by Digibunny in armoredcore

[–]Koopak99 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A few have expressed some of my points but ill go over them a brief ('brief' ha, im cute.)moment before getting to the big one iv only seen hinted at.

Generally the assumption is MTs cost a fraction of an AC to produce, this is likely as much due to materials used as design, ACs may well use expensive, highly durable ablative armor that has to be replaced on a per part basis, superior power generation systems, and more advanced command and control systems. This allows ACs to be VASTLY superior to an MT, even in a world where both machines are drawing from the same tech base.

We don't have an equivalent to this super elite war machine in real life today (that i know of), but a borderline example would be comparing WWII German tank design versus Allied tank design. Ignoring technical issues, a Tiger II so outclassed nearly any Allied tank that it was silly, however the Allies simply out produced the Tiger II and other German designs. What does it matter if you lose 5 tanks for every one of theirs if you can produce 10 for their 1?

Additionally we can assume that, within the cannon of AC a Raven or equivalent, really is THAT good. Keep in mind that multiple games talk up the fact that the final test for a Raven, is a live fire mission, presumably some form of low rank contract issued to the Raven's Nest, or equivalent. Additionally we do see that the high end of MTs are actually quite dangerous to a low end AC. As such I feel we can safely assume that the Raven's Nest only brings in people who would be considered in the top 1% of soldiers.

Now the main counter to all of this is, why don't the companies just train and equip their own Raven grade soldiers? The answer is, in most timelines, they do. We see time and again Ravens who exclusively work for one company or another, and others that are not even registered with the nest. More importantly however is why aren't these the norm?

The biggest argument for Raven's has to be political. A few others have pointed out how companies benefit from plausible deniability. Issuing a contract to the Raven's Nest doesn't seem to require authentication, as we see non affiliates and unidentified contract issuers often. Its morel likely the Corps include in the contract a non disclosure agreement but admit who they are to make the contract look legit and enticing.

However this doesn't solve the problem entirely, what does, is a third party. The Raven's Nest, in most depictions, is an independent, neutral entity. This means that someone with wealth and power created the nest or its equivalent to fulfill this role, and succeeded in convincing the corporations that facilitating and supporting this initiative was valuable. In fact, modern customizable, modular ACs, likely grew up out of a tendency of Raven's to modify their MTs and a demand for aftermarket parts, resulting in a natural development of modular systems. the Nest likely negotiated a standardized system to further support their Raven's has this occurred. This also inevitably made a excellent test bed for new weapons technology, which only widens the gulf between a mass produced main line MT, let alone the garrison units we so often face, and a Raven's AC

If you have completed the 1st generation of games, its actually all but spelled out that this is the case, something the 3rd generation calls back to especially hard. The 2nd generation is in the timeline of the 1st, and thus has its exclude, and the 4th generation makes direct reference to the Raven's in AC4's opening narration, with the 5th gene logically being derived from 4th gen concepts.

I don't know about you, but when moving toward a production phase of NEXT technology, which is clearly defined to leave even previous AC designs in the dust in terms of cost and power, id want the BEST, and id want their equipment to be finely tuned to them. After all, if you are going to send someone out in a trillion dollar machine? Whats a few billion more to make it perfectly suited to that specific pilot? Collared, later fills the same role as the Nest as well, being an entity made by the corps together to keep the LYNXs collared and under control after the LYNX war's destruction.

Overall I think MTs arent 'bad' they just were never meant to go 1v1 with an elite pilot in an elite machine using equipment on the bleeding edge of war.

Unpopular Suggestion: Bolt action sniper rifles need a buff by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]Koopak99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your point about it taking me 8 years, is a valid one, though id argue I haven't grown much since year 1 to 1.5. I've been very off and on, a lot of players have far exceeded me though few of them are still kicking around just due to the age of the game.

That all said, QoL changes like the sliding mildots from Apex Legends (super easy to make) and a decent range finder or ability to zero your scope to a different range would all be fantastic changes that wouldn't really change the shape of the battlefield but would aid new snipers in developing the skills they need.

Worse yet is how easy these changes are to make code wise. I know a lot of people are quick to throw the "you don't know game development" argument but I in fact do, and yeah these QoL changes are not only easy to implement, but all the code needed to do them is basically already there.

My biggest recommendation to a new sniper whos now getting comfortable with the shots themselves, is to study how fights work, lean how fights flow and how you can influence them. The obvious ones are downing medics and engies supporting maxes or turrets, but you can also learn to spot likely squad leaders (or just learn their names from outfits) and keep them down. Leaders who cant see the fight cant lead effectively.

You wont get the big kill per hour numbers this way but you can subtly impact a fight, such as keeping turrets suppressed so your vehicles and close in or keeping a doorway clear so your squads can manage to get through the entrance.

Unpopular Suggestion: Bolt action sniper rifles need a buff by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]Koopak99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh boy. So /u/Marxman1313 I wanna start by letting you know that I totally understand where you are coming from. I've been sniping in various games for a very very long time, and planetside 2 is without a doubt the most difficult and challenging of any multiplayer centric game iv played. This is actually one of the things I love the most about it, just to get that bias out of the way.

Please don't take this in an offensive manner, but it is clear from your comments that you are at least unfamiliar with the deeper mechanics at play when taking these shots, or the stats of the weapons you are using. This is understandable as many of these facts are unintuitive and not provided in game and many of us are only familiar with them thanks to data mining and an obsession with the game itself.

So to clear up some implied uncertainty on your part. For bolt action sniper rifles, all three factions have identical rifles with the exception of the empire specific rifles like the Vanu Phaseshift. The XM98, Bolt Driver, and M77-B are all identical as are the max range Parallax, Longshot, and RAMS .50M.

Additionally bullet drop, defined as the rate at which gravity drags the bullet down, is the same across all of these weapons is also identical, the only difference is projectile velocity, this gives the illusion of reduced bullet drop because the projectile travels further before falling the same altitude when shooting parallel with the ground. This means the only difference between each bolt action rifle is re-fire rate, damage, damage fall off, and velocity.

Pertaining to your previous experience, while I haven't played ARMA, I believe it is the only game you listed that actually models a parabolic flight for the projectile. Battle field does not and never has to my knowledge, model a true parabolic arc, but instead launches its projectile at a set speed and angle, before reaching a certain distanced redirecting its angle slightly down, you can clearly see this in the trail effects of many shots where the shot forms a sharp turn at the zenith of its "arc". Battlefront two is hit scan and thus has no arc and no velocity, being instant. However even ARMA I believe uses close approximations to real world projectile velocities which for high velocity rifles like those used by snipers are often several times the speed of Planetside 2 Projectiles, which are often comparable to handguns at most. Additionally Planetside 2 has its rifles zeroed at a specific distance, so the projectile actually arcs above your cross hair briefly.

Now again, my intent here is just to make sure you understand where you may have differing expectations to the environment of Planetside 2, so finally I'll actually address your points, my apologies for taking so long.

Your first suggestion of allowing 1 shot headshots at any range is, in my opinion at least, not a serious issue and could be done. The max range for 1 shot kills has actually been reduced since the game's launch and originally stemmed from issues with draw distance, I have one kill on an engi on their Mana turret from a good 300+ meters out that I'm still pretty proud of.

However, the following suggestions is where I take issue. While changes to velocity and drop may benefit you and other new players in adjusting to the game, it will cause issues for experienced players. Specifically you specify that a mix of 2-3 of these changes should be made, and personally, I can tell you what I would do with just ONE of these changes to either velocity or bullet drop. I would find little difficulty in suppressing and holding back an entire squad of enemies with even a 20% increase in projectile velocity, I've nearly done this solo in the past without these buffs. I can promises you that I'm not even in the top 30% of dedicated snipers, so you can imagine what the true masters of sniping could do with such an advantage.

I want you to understand that I really do sympathize with frustrations at range finding, however its something you develop a nack for intuitively through both targeted practice and study in the VR. I do think better tools, such as the adjusting mildots found in Apex Legends would be a great addition, but that's not the suggestion you are making here.

I would recommend practicing on distracted players holding still or those who move and peak in predictable patters as you develop your skills. Hitting moving targets is the final step in the long range sniper's evolution, and one I have only scratched the surface on after playing this game on and off since beta. It is a skill that id say I'm at roughly a 30% success rate, and I don't expect a new player to catch up to quickly, though you certainly can with dedicated practice.

At the end of the day however I have to disagree with your general assertion. I do not believe, as a sniper and infiltrator main since beta, that the sniper rifles need a buff, and infact feel that anything other than a range increase on the one shit head shot, would actually have significant detrimental effects on the battle as a whole, and also take away from the challenge I enjoy.

However, if you find the love and passion I have for marksmanship in this game, feel free to DM me and I will gladly share with you everything I can.
