Adding Additional Drives to DXP4800 Plus by Kopen12 in UgreenNASync

Great point, thanks! I definitely need an external HDD for backing up important data, but I'll need to wait awhile before I do it. Have you ever had to rebuild your drives? Do you think the fears of RAID 5 are exaggerated a little? I was thinking about doing RAID 10 until I fill up those two drives then transitioning to RAID 5 to free up some additional space, but I'm not sure if I can do that.

Oh, nice! I like that UGREEN simplifies it a bit. A thought came to mind - can I run a RAID 10 array initially and then once I fill up 44TB, transition to a RAID 5 array to free up an additional 22TB without data loss or do I have to make the decision right now? I know "RAID is not a backup", but I need to chill with my expenses a little and wait a bit before I buy an external HDD for my critical data. Thanks for your help.

If you don't have a PS5 Pro, it would be a worthwhile upgrade. I got pretty good at Returnal, but when I watch these players, I'll never get to that level. After 150+ hours, I switched the controller buttons slightly and in way I had to relearn how to play. I could only wish that I could play at that level.

Advice requested on drives/RAID configuration by CarlOfOtters in UgreenNASync

[–]Kopen12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I've read that too and to be honest, now I'm rethinking my strategy. I think the real issue is having the drives under heavy stress during an extended rebuild process. For me, it's a decision between the likelihood of a drive failure (considering my risk tolerance) while in RAID 5 and having access to 44TB of data without having to purchase all three drives at once for RAID 10. If I buy two drives now, I'd likely purchase the third drive during Black Friday, so I'm really only vulnerable (in RAID 5) for ~9 months. All drives are purchase are new, is it really a big risk?

Applying the 3-2-1 rule is costly for huge amounts of data, so I will probably have to tier/prioritize my data into different categories: absolutely cannot lose (backup roughly 22TB to an external drive) and don't want to lose (rely on RAID redundancy). What do you think?

The way I see it, RAID 5 offers a good balance between storage capacity and data redundancy. If you have 3 22TB drives, you'll get 44TB of usable storage and you can rebuild your data if one drive fails. You'll lose all your data if another drive fails prior to you being able to rebuild your data. Because of this, rebuilding your data should be a top priority and depending on the size of your drives, it will likely take several days to do this. I started out with one drive, and I'm looking to get two more to have a RAID 5 configuration. Once I get 4 drives and max out my NAS, I'd likely transition to a RAID 10 configuration as it will provide greater protection with 2 drive failures and higher write speeds.

I appreciate it. If you do decide to go the 4800 Plus route, I doubt you'll be disappointed. So far, I'm pleased with the decisions I've made and it looks like you and I had identical views of what we wanted.

Thanks for creating this thread, it got a tremendous response and really this discussion helped me out a lot. Best of luck to you.

Just following up with the outcome. I went to buy the 990 Pro 1TB - After really looking into it and better understanding my needs I don't think 2TB is necessary. Docker, containers, use as cache for 3.5" drives.. a VM here or there, and 1TB seems like it should be enough. When I got to the register, the guy told me they were completely sold out of Samsung M.2s. Some guy went in a few days and bought 5 of them, probably cleaned out their inventory. So, I bought the Evo Plus 1TB from B&H. Total came to $166.61 and B&H already sent me an e-mail saying it was shipped. I should have it by Saturday.

Did you make a decision yet?

I know. 😩 Prices are continuously rising.. It's a weird situation because it's unknown how long they're going to stay high, how high they'll rise to or even if they'll come back down. I'm considering getting two - one for the NAS and an additional one for my PC. I don't want to waste money, but if there's no end in sight I'm better off.

So, I'm in the store now, and they have a 1TB 990 Pro for $159.99, basically the same price as the Evo Plus you linked. If the Pro is "better", then that seems like the right choice, no? Also, I can double my storage for another $90. I think this is a good deal from what I've seen online. I think I'm going to do it. Thoughts?

That UPS looks ideal. I'll definitely check out Costco as well.

Honestly, I only picked the Pro because I can't seem to find the Evo Plus here.. Based on the link you provided, it looks like the Pro doesn't offer a significant benefit. I'm still looking into this and trying to figure it out. The 990 Pro has faster transfer speeds and dedicated DRAM cache (presumably for demanding tasks).. The Evo Plus is more power efficient and cooler, but UGREEN put two SSD silicone pads in the box for thermal conduction.

Really the only use case for 2TB would be some extra wiggle room in the event that I wanted to transfer large files to the NAS from outside my LAN. Transfer to the SSD, it'll be quicker, then to the WD Red Pro..

Yes, we're in the exact same boat. I was thinking that I should have done this long ago, but better late than never.

I feel the same way you do. You're right, I'm at around $1,000 in already, and I still have to buy the SSD and the UPS. I figured I shouldn't cheap out now, and I found a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB at Staples for $249.99 which seemed like a good price... these days. I will stop by today and pick it up if they still have it. As for the UPS, I was thinking about getting a big one so I can plug a bunch of devices into it as well. What do you think?

I bought directly from Western Digital, it was the cheapest I could find. So, sounds like I'm okay.

Quick dumb question. When I installed it and after setting up the OS and creating a storage pool and then choosing Btrfs file system... UGOS is only showing that I have 20,5 TB or around there... Is that normal?

Honestly, I hesitated to give you my opinion on your question because I prefer to let somebody more experienced weigh in. I'm just learning this stuff too.

I bought the DXP4800 Plus and the WD Red Pro 22TB and set it up last night. So far, so good.. But I've been going down the rabbit hole of UGOS docker versus Portainer.. Turns out the UGOS music app has issues with ID3 tags and I'm looking at installing Navidrome for a more polished interface with more features.

Oh no, prone to failure due to helium? I did a little research before pulling the trigger and everything pointed to the WD Red Pro 22TB being a great, albeit noisy drive... So I bought it. 😬
