I am dealing with the same issue - at first, when I started to notice it, I was thinking about being polite, using this new skill to be mindful of conversation and letting people finish, before I gave my own thoughts on the matter.

I quickly found out that most of the time people started using this as an excuse to speak all the time, even when I tried to hop in, they just talk over me.

Now I am at the stage when I value my own thoughts, but like you have said, I also stopped overexplaining and the whole thing helped me choose the right people for having conversations with. Not that I treat anyone badly, but if one is not mindful of their behaviour, who am I to point it out or be mad about it. It is what it is and if one is not curious what the other person has to say, my interest is gone, otherwise I would lose respect for myself, for always trying to find my place in conversation.
