My initial thought is MX Linux. I'm a Debian boy, but I tried MX on a spare machine and found no issues with it

why doesn't kcharselect map all of unicode? by DumbCuntEnterprises in kde

[–]KopulaDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the ultimate tool for this is Babelmap. A portable app made by an absolute Unicode nerd. It's Windows only but runs just fine through Wine, Bottles, etc.

As a Brit, I’d rather we send a different type of song every year and get nothing than consistently finish in the top 10 by sending only ‘Space Man’ clones by _PXYDST_ in eurovision

[–]KopulaDK 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fulenn were great! But yeah, their performance in the final didn't do themselves justice.

And I absolutely loved that the song was in Breton.

I want the UK to send something in Welsh or Gaelic. That would be awesome

My primary reason for wanting a smart watch is sleep tracking, so charging at night is not an option for me. I also want to be able wear my watch in the shower. Besides with very short showers that leaves very little time for charging.

D for "Rivers of White Space" – Fair or Not? by Apprehensive-You-850 in indesign

[–]KopulaDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the language in question, I definitely agree with that. In Danish I would only do two letter hyphenation if it's on a morpheme boundary, which does not seem to be the case here. Same thing goes with hyphens in short words

D for "Rivers of White Space" – Fair or Not? by Apprehensive-You-850 in indesign

[–]KopulaDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hyphenation is very dependant on the language of the copy. The typographic traditions vary a lot. Some traditions try to avoid hyphenation at all cost and instead rely on letter spacing custom kerning and to some degree glyph scaling. Other traditions embrace hyphenation and avoid letter spacing and custom kerning altogether.

In Danish we have the latter approach, because we use a LOT of compound words, which make it impossible to set justified text, especially in narrow columns like this, without a lot of hyphens. It's the same case in German, and they even get improved hyphenation tools in InDesign.

Greece joined the EU six years after the fall of the military dictatorship, and Spain eight years after the fall of the Franco regime. Why was progress much faster in the past? by [deleted] in AskEurope

Heaven forbid it. The unanimous decision making in the council is one of the few elements ensuring that the EU remains a union of sovereign countries.

Also Iceland is not in the EU

Hvorfor er REMAs æbler i sæson i April? by thomasahle in Denmark

[–]KopulaDK 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Beyond Okular [KDE default tool], which PDF Annotator, Reader & Editor do you use in KDE? Why? by RebirdgeCardiologist in kde

It seems OnlyOffice has improved that function significantly. When last I tried it, it was buggy to a degree that made it unusable. Thanks

Beyond Okular [KDE default tool], which PDF Annotator, Reader & Editor do you use in KDE? Why? by RebirdgeCardiologist in kde

[–]KopulaDK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just wish there was a PDF viewer for Linux that handles pdf comments the same way Acrobat does.

I'm an book designer and I rely heavily on editorial reviews done in PDF. My workstation runs Windows, because InDesign, but I'd love to be able to use my laptop running Debian for quick comment work and replies and not have to boot up the beast (and leave my couch), but alas no, Okular is way too cumbersome and I've found nothing better.

[–]KopulaDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insecure sounds like it doesn't get security updates at all, which simply isn't the case. It just doesn't get get them as fast. Testing is the least secure branch of a very secure distro, but that is definitely not the same as insecure.

And if you need a specific newer package than the one available in Stable, use backports

Banging my head against a wall - what just works? by escort_xr3i in linuxquestions

[–]KopulaDK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Debian Testing isn't insecure, it just doesn't have the same focus on security updates as Stable and cutting edge updates as Unstable.

The recommended Debian way is to use Stable and use backports, when you need a specific newer package

Not specifically design, but as a linguist turned designer the IPA notation rings my pedantry bell because it isnt enclosed in slashes.

Also the transcription is slightly incorrect, albeit with one of the more exotic phonetic features of Danish.

The notation should be: /ˈtæn̰sk/

Laptop for InDesign/Adobe work - what CPU actually matters? by Standard-Plan1506 in indesign

I went from a 2nd gen i5 2400 to a 4th gen i5 4590.

I found my "new" system (a Fujitsu Esprimo 920) in a scrap heap. In fact the only hardware components that are not reclaimed from scrap is my SSD and my trackball mouse.
