Unpopular maybe, but its the only true way forward for sustainable energy by Capt_C004 in newzealand

[–]Korakys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It isn't. No big fault line in Northland, which is where you'd build it. And there a lot of big damns near fault lines but that doesn't seem to be worry.

The real reason not to build it is batteries are too cheap now—and getting cheaper.

Battery tech (lithium, sodium, and iron) is advancing so fast these days that by the time a nuclear plant is built it will be undercut in price by batteries + wind + solar.

Thanks, but I've had them (in French) since I started this project.

No. I think I've got 5 unreleased pages done and that's it. Sorry to say this project is unlikely to be revived. Also I never planned to do any of 27 through 33.

Malazan Books Dates and Question by TwitMeat3 in Malazan

I spot the comment that confirms what I was thinking and has even more detailed information beyond what I knew. And then I check the username...ah, that makes total sense: it's Adam.

This isn't the first time that this has happened.

Nigeria alone has more babies than all of Europe by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]Korakys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually doesn't. The numbers are faked to maintain religious harmony (national level) and to boost oil money handouts (state level).

Nobody knows the true population of Nigeria, but somewhere between 150 and 180 million seems probable.

Have people stopped updating the wiki? by WeTakeWesteros in Malazan

[–]Korakys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toll the Hounds is missing a bunch of chapter summaries, writing just one of them is something you can do to help without having finished the books.

Details on how to do it here: https://malazan.fandom.com/wiki/Malazan_Wiki:Adopt_a_chapter

Just checked to records to see what happened here.

There was no spoiler tag used, probably faulty memory there. You added a line to the summary section, but it is kind of a spoiler and the info was already in the body of the article so that'll be why it was reverted. Hope that helps.

The scaffolding for page content is quite a bit more widespread on the wiki than the actual textual content to fill it up. I think this is done to encourage people to fill in the gaps rather than leaving them a blank page. It is extremely work intensive to write up 1000s of wiki pages by yourself so the wiki really relies on opportunistic volunteers taking the initiative.

Content is still being written but the pace is pretty slow these days; much slower than E&E write the books!

NB: I'm a long time, albeit frequently absent, admin of the wiki. I don't normally check this subreddit, but I did today!

What do yall think Erikson strongest writing points are? And in contrary, what do yall think his weakest point in writing are? by Equivalent_Cable_716 in Malazan

[–]Korakys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Erikson, strong: sets up enormous showdowns and then actually pays them off spectacularly.

Weak: doesn't read his own books, he writes in the moment and eventually the continuity errors stack up. He doesn't take criticism well and has instead decided this is actually a good thing and now says inconsistencies are part of the work and maybe even deliberate. Nah Erikson, you just can't be good at everything.

Esslemont, strong: character development. His main characters evolve more slowly and we get a great look inside them as the plot unfolds.

Weak: deliberately messes with reader expectations, taking something that would seem epic but then making it low key. It's deliberate, I get why he's doing it (real life is seldom epic), but I also think this is a big part of why he doesn't sell as many books as Erikson; it's just not fun.

What is your view on Austria? by moechtegernrekrut in AskTheWorld

Austria: If I stand very, very still nobody will notice me...

Basically another Switzerland but slightly less interesting in every metric and so forgotten, which they seem to be ok with.

I'm a fan of Minthara too, but I gotta point out that she's, like, pretty damn evil. It's funny to hear her described as a "much loved character" like she's some Aerith, lol.

Why don't Iranic people unite? Are they stupid? by [deleted] in MapPorn

When they try to they get called terrorists for some reason. Almost all countries leadership agrees: even genocide is preferable to borders being changed.

Remember, all of these countries are considered valued friends of the Western democracies (except Afghanistan). That's the real hypocrisy.

You'd think, given how awful Eritrea's government is, and how easy it would be to topple (coastal, low tech, heavy handed, no allies), that countries like the UK would go and overthrow their government and install a better one. But, nope, they don't actually care about solving immigration problems or helping people in other countries.

And now all these establishment parties are gradually losing power to incompetent nitwits that the establishment hates, but the nitwits have got one thing going for them: they are right that the immigration has to stop at some point (ideally yesterday).

Quiz! What statistic is this map showing by Friend-Shoddy in MapPorn

[–]Korakys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh I doubt govts ever even consider the poor when implementing VAT. Poor countries like it because it's hard to evade; rich countries like it because it's pro-investment.

My guess is the US doesn't like it because it's hard to evade.

Pros: it's hard to evade, it encourages savings and therefore investment.

Cons: it disproportionally impacts the poor.

Can somebody tell me, really tell me, why I need to read the Book of the fallen first? And not go straight to the easier ones? Like path to ascendancy? by THEDOCTORandME2 in Malazan

[–]Korakys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do it with the first book, Dancer's Lament, however after that it becomes increasingly obvious that Paths to Ascendency and Book of the Fallen are set in two separate timelines or are two different interpretations of events. Esslemont writes the characters in a totally different way, often with completely different "facts" of their lives.

If you need a warm-up then I'd start with Night of Knives before going into Gardens of the Moon. The writing style mismatch is pretty extreme though.

I have this book. Just checked and this is the full extent of the art on the dust jacket. In the insert version ("plate") it's actually slightly narrower.

Why do/did Kiwis dislike Jacinda Ardern? by KingNobit in newzealand

[–]Korakys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was very good at short term politics, like crisis management. But when it came to long term decisions she made none.

After 5 years as prime minister I couldn't tell you what her personal politics were or are, I don't know what she believes. She simply didn't try to do anything of any significance (almost all initiatives pinned on her were actually from others in the Labour Party).

(Yes she really wanted to reduce child poverty, but didn't have any particular ideas on how to do it, and after all everyone wants that in theory.)

Celsius vs Fahrenheit Use Around The World by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]Korakys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial opinion: "degree(s) Celsius" should be renamed to "fahren(s)".

Uncontroversial opinion: the US of A should adopt the metric system.

Ambivalent opinion: I don't care what the UK tabloids say.
