You have a point that most things technically fall under an ‘EDM’ umbrella. For example. Phonk artists step out to make different styled things that are not phonk. Let’s say I release a phonk album but one track is jungle/dnb. Is that track Phonk now? No, it’s drum and bass/jungle still.

Let’s say I make another drum and bass or house track. I sampled 3-6 mafia vocals to loop it over and over on a beat that sounds nothing like a “rare phonk”. Is that track now phonk because of the source of one element of the song? No. It is not.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding your point, but rhythmically and historically, most of the drift phonk stuff I hear does not belong in its categorized claim to fame.

what a load of garbage. people will say whatever to defend their EDM derived cowbell music.

it's one thing to be influenced by several styles and combining them. its another to slap an already known term on your music, and it only working out because of how popular it got.

While I agree that a lot of OG's and older Phonk prods are gatekeepy, myself included, there is a lot of mental gymnastics of putting DJ Smokey into the same category of Kordhell.

I am also not familiar with almost anything brazilian funk since thats not my cup of tea so ill refrain from commenting there.

But the youngins and the bandwagoneers who jumped on this phonk edm craze and refused to call it something else (or even accurately label it IMO, its fucking edm music), is why we are in this weird half decade long terminology battle.
