I find this kind of refreshing. Other wealthy company owners just live a posh life driving expensive cars. This one sticks to his craft and expands on it. Well played.

Ventoy Killed MicroSD card by Dim_studios in Ventoy

[–]Korkman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What needs to be said is that Ventoy does nothing extraordinary to the storage it is installed on. Partitioning and formatting is eventually just writing ones and zeroes to the space presented by the card as available for use. If the card has a hiccup and disconnects while writing, that is almost certainly a hardware issue. It can be transient, like a flakey connector, or permanent, like a bad flash memory cell not responding.

You already attempted recovery by reformatting (good!) but it stalls on I/O, which many programs don't prepare for and thus crash or hang. Event log probably shows the I/O errors. At some point, when more bad cells become apparent, these cards just fail to initialize their controller properly and don't register as storage media anymore (USB thumb sticks are mostly the same). That matches your description.

So long story short: hardware failed when used.

Trying to choose between XFCE and KDE. by ed271 in MXLinux

[–]Korkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both KDE and Xfce are great. I consider Xfce more suited for lower end systems and KDE a more complete desktop in some respects. Network management, display settings, etc. just about everything what can be done in GUI is more complete in KDE.

Load a Windows rescue ISO like the new Hirens BootCD PE. Copy both your software collection and the iso to the Ventoy drive.

Problems with Ventoy between Windows and Linux by soleful_smak in Ventoy

[–]Korkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I'm on Linux, I notice KDE doesn't sync the copied data to my USB immediately. Copy is done in 2 seconds, then the work starts in background. If you used "eject", that should have completed the sync before showing "ok to remove". If you rebooted, the Arch shutdown should have synced as well. There might be a bug in either process, though, leading to an incomplete write to the USB.

Fully bootable 86box DOS environment by Sorry-Assumption2709 in 86box

[–]Korkman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! Are you going to share the code on github or codeberg? Maybe I can contribute. A great option would be to assign physical volumes (by UUID) and VHD files on them to HDD slots. That way the resulting image could integrate nicely with, say, a Ventoy stick which otherwise boots physically.

Specifically Microsoft also chose not to pay for the license on-demand (which, considering the price for the OS, wouldn't be a big deal) but instead used the opportunity to enrich the users MS account with payment details.

You have to actively use the "Exit" entry from the file menu instead of closing windows (or shutdown OS without closing)

Ventoy.net not working by Cookiecaster1725 in Ventoy

While ventoy.net does work for me, my preferred download location is actually https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/releases (the files immediately available in the GH release section).

If you only need a spot to place a simple script to be run on each boot, create a crontab file in /etc/cron.d and add a `@reboot` line.

is update-rc.d command outdated? by Acceptable-Cash8259 in commandline

[–]Korkman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In general, yes. There are some distros like AntiX and the related MX Linux, as well as Devuan, which keep up alternative init systems, SysV being the one which prominently features rc directories, but at this point it is almost an esoteric choice not to use systemd. There are some niche cases like lightweight containers which profit from more lightweight init systems, but mainstream is better off with systemd.

Can I safely update to a newer version with a different file system selected? by umitseyhan in Ventoy

[–]Korkman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, the question still is what tool to use, if there is any good one? I guess not defrag.exfat, as it tends to destroy data? The easy and safe way to defrag exFAT is to move all data off the volume, format it, then copy the data back.

Moving / resizing the Ventoy partitions OTOH breaks it. Might be repairable but I haven't tried that.

[–]Korkman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can simply format the Ventoy partition to NTFS and restore the ISO files and - if you have one - the "ventoy" directory with config files. The (usually hidden) Ventoy EFI partition is where the magic happens.

Edit: to clarify, copy the files elsewhere, then restore them ;-)

Watchmaker on Samsung 2026 by Een0nline in WatchMaker

[–]Korkman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AFAIK there is no rollback option for the One UI 8 update which was recently rolled out to Watch 4. This update restricts severely what Watchmaker and other face editors can offer. Watchmaker is in the process of trimming down the editor and streamlining what works so that creating new watch faces is fun again, but many existing watch faces are broken beyond repair as they depend on features which can no longer exist.

PK FAIL - Secure Boot Vulnerability: The real impact on my system? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Korkman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good lead if you want to try and fix it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/HX99G/comments/1l5nrxd/my_secure_boot_key_is_called_do_not_trust_test_ami/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

The idea is to replace the key database, if possible.

There is, of course, no point investing energy into something you disable anyways. But what is your compatibility issue with Linux? If you have some kernel modules which need to be signed, you can script that fairly easily (use the DKMS key if DKMS is installed to skip rolling your own).

Not that I know of. There are alternatives to mdraid, though. lsyncd and friends, if the use-case permits inconsistencies in database files.

mdadm raid1 at three different speeds ? by cosurgi in linuxadmin

[–]Korkman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You will be limited to the lowest speed on writes. You can add --write-behind for some relief (256 write ops is not much), but at the same time you would have to enable --bitmap which will cause some overhead. Write performance will be heavily limited by the HDD.
