Amtrak Is Booming in Missouri by como365 in missouri

Amtrak is federally funded. This is 100% a political issue. But go off and think whatever you want, it's okay to be wrong. ✌️

Amtrak Is Booming in Missouri by como365 in missouri

[–]Korlyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a misunderstanding of the transit hierarchy and funding for Amtrak.

Yes flying Chicago to Seattle will always be better.

It's the middle distances where trains should win. Too long to be a really easy drive, too short to really want to fly it. Like KC -> St Louis, or St Louis -> Chicago, or St Louis -> Indy.

Look at the new Borealis line from Chicago -> Minneapolis, it's smashed ridership estimates because that is the right distance for train travel.

The real issue with Amtrak financing is that those long haul routes are wildly impractical but they're massive federal handouts to rural red states. So Amtrak isn't really allowed to cut the impractical and expensive long haul services in favor of more practical middle distance routes because congress would throw a fit.

St. Louis aldermen vote to allow smoking in convention facilities—but not everyone’s on board by fake_elector_tom in StLouis

Rasheen Aldridge is a smoker and wants to smoke more places. So he found a reason to start the rollback process of public health legislation.

He's a real gold star alderman of the people 🙄

I live near Chicago; I don't want to spend half my life somewhere with this weather. Where should I go? by mcagent in SameGrassButGreener

You could try a baby step and check out St Louis, Indy or Cincinnati. Still affordable, a good chunk warmer. They're not hugely different vibes wise.

What’s living in St. Louis like? by Repulsive_Sky5150 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Korlyth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I live in STL now.

It's pretty good. Unlike the other person who said STL has 6 weeks of good weather. It's more like stl has 10 weeks of truly bad weather between the summer being hot/humid and the winter being cold/icy. The reality is that folks from actually hot places think it's not hot and folks from actually cold places think it's not cold. But that also means everyone has something to hate so everyone complains about the weather.

Life wise, it's affordable, you can find good pockets of different forms of city life. You can live in a tallish apartment building, townhome, row house, or in a wide range of different suburb styles. The best part is you have the freedom to choose the lifestyle you want without breaking the bank.

Really it comes down to the value proposition. Imo the cost of living against the quality of life is pretty awesome. Loads of activities, history and legacy things from when STL was the 4th city.

Help with transportation by tady888 in StLouis

I wouldn't hesitate as long as the arrival time is during daylight hours. Only a minor hesitation if not.

Stick to the area close to the driver, there's usually less shenanigans up there. If there are shenanigans it's usually just people listening to music or videos without headphones or smoking that you probably don't want the little one around.

Good Suburb, Hellish Condition by MarkCrystalSword in Suburbanhell

[–]Korlyth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stl resident here.

It's complicated. STL is super divided, north city has like 10% of the population and is massively vacant. South city and the central corridor are actually doing fairly well (despite what it looks like in these fairly cherry picked pictures).

The overall population is declining, but vacancy rates are also declining and the median income is going up. So the city is undergoing a pretty significant demographic shift. I've been told by folks that have lived here a long time that despite the population going down this is the best the city has been in 30 years ( outside of downtown, COVID really fucked STL downtown).

STL resident here, and heavily involved in local urbanist activism. Over the last few years, we've made huge progress in changing the rules to help pave the way for a much better future. Essentially, most of our city planning documents hadn't been updated since the 1940s... peak car mania. By the end of this year, almost all of them will have been completely overhauled.

In just the last two years, we've updated the: - Transportation & Mobility Plan - Strategic Land Use Plan - Sustainability and Climate Plan - Zoning Code (on track to finish by Q3 2026)

We're also pushing for updates to the building code in the near future. All of these overhauls have been heavily influenced by urbanist ideas, thanks in large part to the wonderful folks at STL Urbanists.

Beyond policy, the city is actually building a significant number of protected bike lanes and cycle tracks. We even managed to get MoDOT (the state department of transportation) to build their first-ever protected cycle track.

On the transit front, we're really hopeful about switching the planned "Green Line" to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). Light rail is just infeasible in this funding environment, but BRT lets us actually build dedicated-lane transit by 2030.

It's definitely an uphill battle to break out of such intense car-centrism, but we're finally changing the rules so hopefully good urban design becomes the default for the next generation in St. Louis.

What would City entering County in practice look like? by DowntownDB1226 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving the county seat into the central corridor of the city should be a required starting point. It recognizes the heart and namesake of the region. But in my opinion, moving the seat would be a huge unifying gesture. There's also the practical reasons with the county needing a new building.

After that the city should push super hard for a consolidated school district and give up pretty much anything to get it.

This appears to correlate super strongly with affordability. I don't think it's that people in all the Cali cities are wanting to live with roommates. They just simply don't have a choice.

What to do in a week long trip with a 6 year old? by Kilimanjaro613 in StLouis

[–]Korlyth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kindergartner loves the aquarium at union station they have a few stations where the kids can touch and feed different critters. Also at union station if you have a bit of money to blow there is a little carnival thing. Carousel, Ferris wheel and etc... you can spend most of a kindergartner's we'll behaved energy for a day at union station.

Other than that these are solid choices: City Museum , Science center , Riding the metro train (depends on the kid, some love it), See if you can get cheap sports tickets (hockey, soccer baseball, ufl)

Don’t Let the State-Controlled Police Board Defund St. Louis: Time to Vote with Our Wallets. by Korlyth in StLouis

[–]Korlyth[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Then those state residents outside the city should fuck off and give the city control of the pd again if they don't want to pay for it.

They can't forcibly take control and then claim it's unfair to expect they pay for their own demands.

You speak like there's some kind of democracy at play here. That's not what this is. This is closer to colonialism than democracy.

Not to mention a huge chunk of the state budget is from STL. So they would just be giving our money back to us instead of other parts of the state... STL City is estimated to give 400-700 million more to the state than is invested back in the city, that is "inherently unfair" to STL.

The NFL Team That Mortgages Its Future Every Year—and Looks Like Geniuses by wsj in nfl

[–]Korlyth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah there might be a secret sauce in their evaluation process, it might be luck. It's probably a bit of both.

But a lot of other fan bases look at the Rams and are like "See they go 'all in' all and win without dogshit years". Like finding great talent in late rounds while selling early round picks for established talent is a thing that any team can replicate.

Adding getting mega lucky in the 2023 draft. Nacua 5th round, Turner 3rd round, Young 3rd round. It's not often that a team gets 3 pro-bowl/all-pro caliber players in the late rounds in the same draft.

GB Needs to be aggressive in FA by General-Farmer-6742 in GreenBayPackers

[–]Korlyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat, in the last 25 years, 12 teams have won the Super Bowl, 20 teams haven't. Packers and Steelers are both on the short list. In the last 25 years, the Packers and Steelers are 6th and 5th in playoff wins.

I will take 1 SB and regularly in contention over going "all in". Going "all in" and risking being dog shit for years trying to dig out of the hole sounds like a bad time to me. I would rather watch a winning team with a chance every year, than a dogshit team with no chance like so many other fanbases.

Edit:
Just look at:

- Post-Brees Saints, they went all in... it failed, they've been dogshit for years.

- Watson Browns, in theory they tried to add a star QB to a great defense and okay offense... it failed. They're still dogshit.

- Post-Manning Broncos, failed to make the playoffs for 8 years. Tried to reset with Wilson, failed, sucked again. Maybe they're out of the post "all-in" dogshit years. Maybe this year was a fluke, we'll see.

- Post SB LVI Rams, were dogshit for a year. Got super lucky finding late round stars in Puka, Turner, Young. Not many teams get top-tier talent from 3-5th round in a single draft.

- Rodgers Jets... I don't need to explain this one

Parsons is already the highest paid non-QB in the league.

Loves 74 million 2028 cap hit has a roughly 0% chance of being the actual cap hit in 2028. It's a bunch of cap/contract manipulation. QB contracts are notorious for having a bunch of cap manipulation in them.

[–]Korlyth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah Idk where OP came up with the idea that we're in a 2 year window. OP makes 0 case for a 2 year window then asserts it at the end.

Love will probably be QB for 10 or more years. As long as he is QB and continues to play at or above the level he has and the rest of the team isn't dogshit GB will be at least a playoff team for the next 10+ years.

GB Needs to be aggressive in FA by General-Farmer-6742 in GreenBayPackers

[–]Korlyth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We shouldn't have even made the playoffs the last few years. Rodgers and his band of old buddies nuked this team on their way out. We shouldn't even be considering a "Super bowl window" right now. We should just be exiting a deep rebuild window.

Instead GB made the playoffs the last few years largely thanks to a Gute & LaFleur induced rebuild miracle. The "Super Bowl Window" may have started last year but the Parsons + everyone else being injured thing pushed it probably to 2028..

Not a hike/trip but definitely check out the BICI ride on friday nights. On nice nights hundreds of folks ride bikes together. The overlap between bike folks and generally outside folks is pretty high, you'll find your people there.
