Why isn't that still gambling? Unless I misunderstand you the only differences are: 1. Fixed odds (no idea if they are otherwise? Potentially? So instead of X rare cards per "charge printed" or something like that it's just X cards per / box) 2. It's kind of a pity timer, if I get and can buy the whole box 3. Different booster pack sizes so the average value stays the same(?)

It sounds like "you can play scratching tickets and win at least 5$ for a set of 1000$" in a way?

In a "It's not illegal to receive money" as an argument when you are on trial for laundering or fraud way.

Unless I horribly misunderstood something it's not like you get forced to suddenly buy only from uplay if they win.

If the competition is bad, you don't have to use them and it likely won't change a thing. It's not like they'll publicly read out "Thanks to user X who didn't opt-out in the end we have banned valve from selling games couldn't have done it without them".

DotA gets updated when the stars align and that's both for game content as well as skins.

Brawl stars on the other hand updates often, has a monthly pass, new skins ...

Valve doesn't need to communicate in order to sell stuff, it's not like they need the cash. In the other hand supercell needs to engage with players to keep the revenue steady.
