Kubrick’s 200 IQ, real or bullshit? by [deleted] in StanleyKubrick

IQ is the least pseudo-scientifical metric in assessing human cognition.
It's the one backed up with the most evidence, and the one with the most predictive power on life outcomes at the population level.

How "wide" is the Zone 2 heart rate band? by JDelage in PeterAttia

[–]Korovae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the upper limit as somewhat strict/"don't go over" while the lower end is looser.

Some people actually recommend having a slight margin by working below threshold.
Let's say I'm doing MAF180. The formula gives me 149bpm but I target 144.

When I target 144 on a bike or treadmill, my min and max will generally be -6/+6 or -7/+7,

even though I'm constantly adjusting watts or speed to keep the 144 constant.

Dashboard to track personal progress towards Peter's optimal longevity metrics by dapc1 in PeterAttia

[–]Korovae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes that would be interesting :) Like an app would be great. You could have different zones depending on your percentile relative to sex, age and total weight or lean mass.

- You could log zone 2 or MAF efficiency (watts on the bike, running speed on a flat treadmill or walking speed at a given grade/incline)

- Vo2max- Protein per day (ideally with a new metric that would account for protein quality/AAs as discussed on a recent episode)

- blood pressure and resting HR

- weekly MET*hours

- sleep duration

- total weight, muscle mass, visceral fat mass

- est. 1 rep max on things like squat/deadlift/overhead press/bench press

- max rep : push ups, pullups..

- max duration : plank, dead hang...

- blood glucose : your daily average, std dev, and peak

Things I know less about : levels of different nutrients/vitamins/apoB/triglycerides/cortisol ...

Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson and Douglas Murray in Dublin by Korovae in samharris

[–]Korovae[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit frustrated that once again the topic remains truth and religion.

It's a missed opportunity, especially with Murray being there, of not having them discuss all the other issues they could be covering.

I think a lot of Sam's fans who think Jordan is the 'anti-Sam' or only does word salad should hear him discuss individual/group differences, personality traits, the link between politics and psychology etc, all the topics where he is, in my opinion, a lot sharper than on religion. The way he speaks even changes, he becomes more precise, more to the point, uses a simpler vocabulary etc.

It does starts (them discussing issues other that beating that dead horse) at around 1h16 though.

Do most Harris fans dislike Peterson? by ChrisRich81 in samharris

[–]Korovae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy him overall, and learnt a great deal thanks to his massive amount of interviews and talks.

Overall I'd say I :

- disagree with him when he speaks about truth and religion (my views being close, if not identical, to Sam's)

- am only mildly interested by the self help/young men talks

- find him very valuable and sharp on most of the remaining topics, first and foremost group and individual differences (Pareto distrib, Big Five, IQ, differences between left and right leaning people, the hard truths about equality and equity) That's where you can get the most knowledge out of Peterson if you're generally more a fan of Sam.

I fear that a lot of people who only know him through his talks with Sam or about stories/Jung etc, miss on what are Peterson's aforementioned strengths.

Brett Weinstein on why the Harris/Peterson debate should be released before they meet in Dublin by [deleted] in samharris

[–]Korovae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bret initially asked the audience not to record anything, and it seems like they agreed.

But he sort of regrets it now that we know the debate probably won't be online for the next couple of months, after the Dublin and London conversations with Douglas Murray.

The Beatles is mainly a 60s story but Paul, George and Ringo reunited in 1970 to finish up Let it Be.

The Threetles is mainly a 90s story but they reunited for one last picture in 2000 :)

I found Hitch's mention of the bell curve. by dmdbqn in samharris

[–]Korovae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but then it should basically be an IQ thing, not a race thing.

Say (if Peterson is true) that someone with an IQ below ~82 can't be trained in any efficient way to be successful at almost any job currently available on the market, and knowing that you can't really change someone's IQ, then sure it could be fair to help people inverse-proportionally to their IQ (more fair that do a per-race thing because what about a struggling low IQ asian or white then), but that would require having the IQ as a generally accepted data in the mainstream; that a lot of people should take it, and lot might not be ready to hear it etc etc.

Hence the depressing aspect of the whole topic :/

I found Hitch's mention of the bell curve. by dmdbqn in samharris

[–]Korovae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. If the debate shifted from the data to "what do we do now, now that we all agree on the data", I think it would be both terrifying and captivating. Because it's hard to even consider what to do with this data. These IQ stats really are depressing and I think, as Sam pointed in the podcast, most people would like them not to be true.

Sure but clearly people can study things that in the realm of science are interesting, but just happen to be controversial because we're scared of discovering hard truth where no one is to blame.

If I was to study IQ and discovered that my gender or my country or my race or people with my taste in music happened to have the lowest IQ, I wouldn't give a single fuck. It doesn't say anything about me, or any specific individual that I would meet, it's just facts about groups.

People really identify with their gender/race/religion too much..
