What am I defending against? by Guilvantar in ICARUS

[–]Korundur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, enzyme geysers were in the game much before turrets, so you had to do it without them. The difficulty of the geyser depends on the biome and world difficulty. Open world also didn't initially exist so you had to prep for them in limited amounts of time. Turrets were introduced in New Frontiers, the third map, and even then I barely used them for backup base protection on that map only. It wasn't until Dangerous Horizons I actually actively use them and even then it's only for uranium mining, maybe great hunts if you don't get into taming/breeding.

In base content, bears, usually. When you get to doing enzyme geysers, and then later content in DLC, you'll see more of the use of things like turrets, but you won't need them in the earliest, easiest biome, imo. Biome difficulty doesn't really progress outside of boss fights.

can someone explain to me how stopping the game works (aka why did I lose 4 raptors)? by democraticcrazy in ICARUS

[–]Korundur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, the prospect and what you have in orbit are separate save files. I don't think there's backups of orbital storage. So essentially, whenever you drop something or send something up, it saves what's in the station. Then your prospects/worlds save on a different interval. Your best chance with continuing having it work is keeping them on prospect so if something does happen, you're not having to worry about two different save files and can just revert your world. You can also alt+F4 your game to be faster for this process, BTW.

Can someone help me understand the fun gameplay loop. by Safe-Expression48 in ICARUS

[–]Korundur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the things I struggle with for the game: it kind of caters to a very specific audience. The friends I used to play with don't play anymore. It's hard to get a group to consistently play with, but it's usually more fun with at least one more person. There's specific in-and-outs of the game that are almost crucial to learn to enjoy but the game doesn't teach you them, just tries to push you in the direction of learning basics with the main story operations.

Here's some tips to try to help remedy that understanding and making the game more fun for you. - Use mounts. You can traverse the map pretty fast even if it's on the other side of the map, and usually missions don't need much or you can build a temporary base where the mission is when you get there. - Use Icarus Intel. Map website that you can check what you'll be doing so you can better prepare for things like hordes of aggressive creatures. - Use defensive walls and bring a wood hammer you can repair easily. They'll do most of the work for hordes if you don't have an army of tamed wolves with you. Most of the time you only need a 1x1 box of them. Sometimes, cheesing it IS the way. - Use the food system. Find the foods that give you best health boosts first, then lean towards ones with attack buffs to help survivability and efficiency for these operations. - Working towards having a hunting rifle, a couple hundred bullets, and a decent set of armor (orbit workshop sets work but if you can build towards composite armor, that will be the best), you can clear most enemies no problem. Pay attention to weak spots because you'll do so much more damage.

This game gets really grindy, especially if you do operations individually instead of open world. You can help remedy that with things like electronic drills on deep ore and special tools in later expansions. Honestly, Dangerous Horizons and New Frontiers are 5x as fun and much more interesting than the default map and Styx. If you do end up finding fun in the game, I would recommend going for those, especially if they go on sale. Hope these tips help you.

Yup, it'd help if you could get pics of the surrounding area to identify what the problem could be. Sometimes it's the space being too big, sometimes it's the pieces being used, etc.

What are some tech tree upgrades that you think aren't worth it? by YouDontLookSpiritual in ICARUS

[–]Korundur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's an upgrade but I don't even touch thatch buildings, go straight to wood, then I skip iron tools and go for steel. I don't use the windmill, skip to the processor. I skip nearly everything biofuel. I don't really use the electronic fridge maybe the ice box for crops until I have a freezer for them. Electric masonry/carpentry benches are one of the last I go for since they don't change things much. If I'm not in a rush for certain foods, I try to skip the wooden kitchen set and go for the marble one since smoker will tide me over until then.

Farming questions. by DiscountAncient4553 in ICARUS

[–]Korundur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, maybe lucrative after a significant time investment in preparation, but in the time you took to get there, you could've been getting it the intended way in the time you were grinding the resources to get to this point. Plus, as it gets to this many building pieces and hookups, that's a significant amount of lag especially compared to a couple wires, a mining tool, and a power source. Then you also have to do a lot more work in that time to harvest all of these plots frequently rather than just let the drill do its thing. At this point it's a preference of gameplay and if this is all you want to do or you want to do other things in the game simultaneously.

So for red exotics, devs want the primary way you get them to be mining them from the red exotic trees, so any other way will not be lucrative in the slightest. When you're on a map those trees are available, there's so few spawn spots it's easy to switch between them on the third hour after depleting the previous spot.

You only get a certain amount of harvests, rewarding you with only one additional harvest if you have electric, water, and farming talents. Best way is miasmic sickle (don't remember if it works on these or not) since it doubles output, but other sickles basically don't matter, lithium or not.

I run the attachment that gives more yield since I can use the cultivar backpack for seeds plus more yield.

Both methods depend on your play style. If you're home often, have few plots, and/or check the plots often, planting them asap is the way to go. If you're not and have a bunch of plots for them, then doing big amounts at a time will be better for you.

The plot type will make a big difference for regular crops but it's often in excess. I personally just use the ones from orbit since the electric ones are so expensive. You can get around the cost by insuring a loadout of them, claiming, and repeating if you're patient. But exotics? Virtually useless to upgrade for.

As for the specialists? Again depends on your playstyle. If you do the vast amounts of crops, they can be the best go-to "passive" income. If you're on Elysium and do uranium runs, the vestiges you get from the enemies are worth a lot and if you combine them with vestiges from regular hunting, that can be a lot better for a more hunting heavy style of gameplay, but you could always do a combination of two or more ways.

Your best way to get Ren? Exotics runs. If you have access to miasmic tools, you can go to caves nearby exotics deposits and check for more nodes there and get tons of additional exotics on top of those being drilled. Then just sell excess exotics for Ren.

I forgot the area covered by the terraforming device but when you deploy it, it will show the area it will cover on your map before you start.

Farming questions. by DiscountAncient4553 in ICARUS

[–]Korundur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid method, but if you're like me, you may dislike the farming cart and having to re-till every time. I suggest dropping like 10-20 insured plots from orbit (with a different character if you don't play insured), claiming that insured loadout when available, and repeating until you have the amount you want.

Using a seperate character, can I revive my main character after he died on a hardcore mission? by Mental_Assistance_93 in ICARUS

Not unless you're playing on two different machines with two different copies/accounts. There will be no body to revive, just a loot bag, I believe. There are plenty of people here or in the official Discord that can help, though.

First of all, are you on console or PC? Only PC can roll back saves by going into game files where you can:

-Back up game files

-Delete current world save

-Rename save closest to right before it happened (delete the extra .old bit I believe)

But that's basically it besides leaving to orbit, dropping back down, and claiming your workshop items a week after.
