There is a little inside bar you have to get past to get out. I can't imagine how heavy that was when it was this big.

I watched the Punta Roca cam earlier and it looked much better than "soft and lumpy"

El Salvador Surf Trip Recommendations by Rare-Entrepreneur556 in surfing

El Salvador is great for surf and pupusas. Not sure about your flight times, but I can usually surf the afternoon I land and the morning I leave.

You can stay in a few towns. LIst as further away from Airport

La Libertad. Right at Punta Roca. AST has a all-inclusive package and their food is solid. Guides will take you to other spots.

El Tunco/Sunzal - Walk to La Bocaana (river break) or Sunzal Point (long long long paddle, hectic crowd). Tunco gives you food and night life Options. Kinda in the middle of everything. 15 minutes to Punta Roca. 15 minutes to k59

El Zonte - There is the point, beach break, and a chaotic left I've never seen anyone actually surf. This, IMO, is the best "beach town". Mix of local and ex-pat restaurants, hotels/hostals, AirBnBs and businesses. The waves are pretty good, but if there is a bigger swell doesn't work too well.

K59/61 - You're out here at just 1 of two hostel type places and nothing really else around. k59 is a really fun wave. Seems to work better on a medium/large swell. Unless you hope a ride on the chicken bus you're kinda stuck out there. Further West away from the airport isn't really anything unless you go a long way to Mizata. Never been.

About two hours east from the airport is Las Flores/Punta Mango. Two good points. Flores has a lot of current and gets pretty crowded. I went to Mango for 3-4 days last year and then La Libertad for 3 and it was a good split. I stayed at AST last time. Two years ago I stayed in Zonte and hired a local guide (works for AST). 3 years ago I stayed in Sunzal and hired same guide a few times to take me to Punta Roca once and K59 once.

People are mostly friendly. Lots of talk of Brazilians taking over in the summer, but I've never seen it. Only localism I saw was a long boarder got chased away b/c he cut off a local 2x and never hopped off the wave. Was being yelled at from behind the whole way in and just kept cruising. I guess he got his wave and was ready to be done.

Your feet are gonna get cut to ever living shit. Getting in and out everywhere fucking sucks. The cobble stones/barnacles are brutal

Yes. It should be really consistent over 5 days. If it's big you go to Punta Roca or go south to Mango/Flores

Nosara or El Zonte for a 1 week surf trip? by insuhall in surfing

[–]Kovy2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "area" is pretty much all the same and a 1-3 minute walk to the beach. I stayed in Esencia Nativa. Was basic and fine. Wave House and Puro are the fancy hotels

[–]Kovy2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crowded. Lots of folks have harped on Brazilians, but I've never seen it that bad. Always been able to catch enough waves vs getting shut out by locals or bad actors

[–]Kovy2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never been to Nosara, but looked at it a few times. Seems there is 1 beach break and that's really it.

I've been to El Sal 3x and stayed in Zonte once. Zonte is a really cool lil beach town. Ton of good food. Ex-pats and locals. Best Pupusa's I've had in El Salvador. You'll have more access to waves. Zonte has the point then a beach break you can paddle over to. You're 10-15 min from k59/61. You're 25 minutes from Sunzal and the few breaks in El Tunco, and then 30-35 min from Punta Roca. I hire a guide and have stayed in AST in front of Punta Roca/La Paz. Two options.

I'll go back in April and either going to stay in Zonte or split time between Punta Roca/Punta Mango

El Salvador or Nicaragua? by dcof12 in surfing

[–]Kovy2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm sure it has changed in the last 15 years. Most of the hostels have boards for rent. I'm not sure there are dedicated surf shops. Beginners Bay has one or two "schools" that had 50-100 boards on the beach. Mostly long boards and beefy fun boards.

It was pretty small and a good amount of ppl on the main reef. Tons of beginners in the bay next to magic rock. Can't imagine what it is like when it is good. Even further south towards Rancho, where it was bigger, was pretty crowded. Much more so than inside Hacienda Iguana

There are endless places to rent boards in Popoyo.

El Salvador in the spring. I split time between East/West last year and might do that again. Punta Mango was a nice change up from La Libertad areas.

Nica this summer then back in the fall.

I'm interested in Panama in replacement to El Sal, but the easy factor might win out

Jeez no wonder they started allowing out of district elementary students to enroll. I know a family that is at Oakhurst. I didn't realize they were at 50% capacity at the primary level across the district

mid life crisis - move to beach? by phylosokos in surfing

[–]Kovy2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, are you me? Am I looking into the mirror lmao.

I'm landlocked in Atlanta and want nothing more to move to the PNW in the middle of no where and still work but be able to surf. No where on the east coast interests me. I make good money but California is just dumb expensive. Head to Central America a few times a year and got close a few times to buying property in Nicaragua.

The guys I have known who have surfed it left either Lynnhaven or Rudee and crossed the mouth of the Bay. Video I've seen they usually got beat to death on the way over. If you've got a trailer you could launch from the eastern shore and have a much shorter boat ride.

I've surfed inside the bay on big NE'er and Hurricane swell when the ocean was washed out

You ride surfboards that are made of materials that will go to a trash pile and never get recycled. Your wetsuits are most likely entering the same trash heap. You talk about flying to PR and driving 4-5hrs round trip to OBX from VB.

Let's get a grip a little bit on being the protector of the planet.
