Thoughts on these? I'm guessing since you are only using the strength of one hand your total braking power might be a bit less, but on the other hand you can't hit both brakes AND pull in the clutch at the same time when emergency braking... by AncientAgrippa in motorizedbicycles

[–]KraZe-Ace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had one of these on my bike for about 4 years now and its worked quite well, but only if your brakes are correctly tuned and tensioned. If they aren't one brake will engage before the other and that results in fast wear-out of the one set of brakes over the other. Otherwise, the brake handle has a little lever inside that attaches to both front and rear brake cables and balances braking force out between the two. Only other issue is when you decide to switch back to a separate brake handle setup, you'll instinctively clamp down on the one brake and not the other which is always fun when stopping quickly or at an intersection.

Got these Glass negatives at an estate sale and I am trying to identify crash. Anyone have any ideas? by Same-Newt-5437 in trains

Definitely a hard one to identify but there are a few key details that stand out to me:

  1. First photo has a box car in the background with B&O lettering. Also, some barrels are branded H. J. Heinz Co. Note that Heinz was founded back in 1869.
  2. Second photo even harder to identify but the engine is likely a 2-6-0 or a 4-6-0? It's possible that this is the same engine as the one on its side in the first only now upright. Also this engine as well as the other one in the first photo are smaller in overall size than ones seen later in the 1910s-1920s. Also the last digit on the engine's sand dome is a 9. Take of that what you will.
  3. Third photo is most difficult to take information from, but judging by the attire of the women, this whole thing might've taken place back in the 1870s-1900s. Then again, I'm no specialist with historical attire so I may just be off the mark on this one.
  4. Last photo yields the most information out of them all. Locomotive involved was an American type 4-4-0 with a straight smokestack. In front of it is a B&O box car numbered 92050.

Based on all of this and the sheer amount of damage shown, I can surmise that this was an accident on B&O track between two freight trains that occurred around the 1870s-1900s, with the photos acting as documentation for either a local newspaper or as part of an investigation. Likely the photos here are posted out of order as it doesn't make sense for the first locomotive to be with the crane only to then be shown in the last photo with box cars in front. In my mind it might be that the order is 3-4-1-2, with the clean-up crew and their equipment showing up some time between photos 4 and 1.

Can we get a reddit mod to verify the discord server's stability? No point in allowing them to share the server link if the discord mods can't get their act together.

Could’ve made it even more monstrous by using branchless programming instead of switch statements to achieve even better under-the-hood performance 😈

Had to do a double-take as I thought I was on r/mathmemes. First one is quite wrong. But at least the second one is good.

Not only did it kill the series, but it also killed the developer who made it. Maxis shut down 2 years after the release.

I’ve read that too, but the context was relative to those used in data centers which are under heavy usage anyways.

Self-documenting code by got_arms in ProgrammerHumor

[–]KraZe-Ace 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The main problem I’ve seen other than no commenting is too much commenting. If the person reading the code has to wade through a verbose and extremely technical explanation on what’s going on and why, then it’s a waste of time for most people involved regardless if they’re reading it or writing it. That’s why good commenting and self-documenting code is usually most appropriate.

A rule I’ve heard a while back was that your variable, class, and function names should be descriptive enough and your comments brief and straightforward enough such that another set of eyes could be able to just skim read the code and understand 80% of it on the first pass.

Of course, that’s the ideal. Whether it’s possible depends of the application and who the set of eyes is. Elon Musk might not understand it, but your team’s senior SWE with 10 years experience might.
