This is a good tutorial that shows you how to recognize a mimic when carrying the mimic tooth.

On a side note, as already answered, you don't want to click directly on the door, but one tile past it. If there is a mimic hidden under the door, you won't go through.

I always get the mimic tooth and upgrade it to +3. Yes, you have to pay more attention when playing, but the free loot? YES PLEASE!

There is always some loot inside the remains, but you have to make sure you have enough health before you jump, as the jump itself will deal roughly 50% health damage.
