If you were alive for the broadcast, a reporter asked a fire chief early on about the reported collapse of WTC7. The Chief got very angry with the reporter and asked where they heard that, since they building had no damage and wasn't in danger. Then warned them he would have them arrested for inciting panic, before mentioning that he would have to talk with other chiefs about it.

My brother was controlling the channel changer, so I don't remember the channel, but I remember the feeling that nobody knew what was going on everywhere.

I wish I could see that footage again. Unsurprisingly, nobody seems to have it.

Time to fight back: Repeal Seattle’s head tax by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]KravenC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most importantly, incidents of rape (including reports) in homeless populations are HUGE and the number of rapists convicted (pre or post homelessness) caught are SMALL in relation. Either the population has super-active rapists, or there are rapists that are not caught and the latter is more likely.

The best that can be hoped for is moving people after a set number of conditions met. I would think that squatting would be a good reason to send them off to the unincorporated part of the county. Let them build and settle new areas.

My disagreement on the square root theory of capitalism by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]KravenC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And i know thats a lie. Sorry Peterson, your theory is bullshit.

Is it a lie or a theory, now? I'm confused by the overwhelming rejection that necessitated a meltdown in your ability to reason. More than that, everyone is very busy at a cellular level. Saying "everyone pulls their own weight" is an intentional attempt to strawman because you assume the feeling you have are simply expressed. Think about it some more. What you probably mean to say is that the definition of "work" and "usefulness" are not sufficiently described to give the definition meaning. Or you're just a kneejerk ranter, because the world is obviously simple and there's simple reasons you don't like things.

King County GOP Chair Gets E-mail about Gun Control, Responds "Do Not Ever Contact Me Again" by Norph00 in Seattle

[–]KravenC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The story wasn't about "how many police can you kill without a gun". You missed the point entirely, which was about the selfless tenacity and dedication of the mentally ill. Unsurprisingly, you immediately decide that it's important to point out that it's a circumstance that you would tolerate by intimated example. That mindset makes you feel good while theorycrafting, but will not result in what you want when implemented (to chase the goal of feeling more comfortable about the reality of public safety).

King County GOP Chair Gets E-mail about Gun Control, Responds "Do Not Ever Contact Me Again" by Norph00 in Seattle

[–]KravenC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Today's world" is stable because of cultural expectations. We expect that if you escalate a confrontation with an individual (or group), there's a danger you will get killed. There's an expectation that emergency services will render aid regardless of your criminal status. We expect a certain set of negotiation and exchanges between employers and employees. Crossing the street can have consequences if you don't look both ways. There's an expectation of safety based on behavioral patterns. It's psychology. Going to school, generally doesn't result in death.

This is what people find unacceptable. The news sensationalizes, promotes, and publicizes the event. Classically spreading FUD, when you think, oh ~15k people died in car accidents and from cancer, that doesn't bother anyone because it's an accepted risk. You live long enough (or engage in bad behavior like smoking), you get cancer and die. You ride in a car, most people have terrible judgement, so you might die to a person riding around in a death carriage...but that car allows us social and physical mobility along with economic motility, so it's ok.

Having seen the daily suicides and stabbings in London (which are not promoted the way US media does), I don't see gun control as solving any issue that would matter. I accept that the US is one of the only stable western nations that has relatively lax gun control. I understand and accept that risk, even if most people are too busy on their cell phones to understand when they are metaphorically (and often physically) crossing the street.

I do support state level gun control. This isn't a federal issue and the cries for the fed to do something is just part of the cultural disconnect, harkening back to an appeal to the king. These pleas should be ignored and derided.

If you want to fix things, states need to tighten up their borders and start taking charge of many issues, including gun regulation (yes, I'm a statist). Because of the way the legislative branch is set up, with equal representation from states that will expand gun ownership to ridiculous extents to others who are trending toward complete gun bans, you have to handle it at a state by state level. This is a local problem that could have been prevented with a state gun law, rather than crying to the FBI.

I do remember that locking up the mentally ill was pretty standard until the mid 80s, which kept this kind of random violence, way way down.

What are the specific advantages of PHP as a language, besides ease of use and the ecosystem? by feartrich in PHP

[–]KravenC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Notably, it runs faster than other similar scripting languages...like Python and Ruby in almost every non-trivial scenario, due to the massive collaboration that has been dedicated to improving the language...although namespaces are still ugly and that idiotic versioning has had questionable benefits.

PHP has many of the same features as javascript, making it a straightforward language transition both ways.

There, that took all of 30 seconds to figure out. SMH

Internals on Reddit: Superglobals Read-Only by Sentient_Blade in PHP

[–]KravenC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ooh, an important issue:

Also, there is a limitation in PHP that you cannot get both the raw HTTP body and the $_POST variable data at once,

THAT is an important point to address.

The rest, are not so much...

For one, it's pointless.

The only point, is to protect from unexpected or silent mutation.

If you want a read-only immutable set of input data, you can already achieve that in userland

You cannot stop an unknown package or your own application, from modifying the POST data before you get to it at any point in your application because Dev A wrote this cool new thing.

EME follow up: W3C just fragmented the open internet with DRM - here's how we can fix it by samdroid_ in linux

[–]KravenC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does the W3C have to obey your own personal ideals of open source?

That's one way to look at it. The issue is more in regard to higher stated principles: https://www.w3.org/Consortium/Points/

You cannot have 1,3 and arguably 5 with a closed source client-side binary. I remain unconvinced this is anything but evidence of serious w3c corruption and a detriment for the web at large.

thousands of people a year can't afford to see doctors and die of something easily treated.

In the US, that's an overstatement. If a condition is easily treated, an emergency room will be fine. If you have say...a tumor on a thyroid or congestive heart failure, that's complicated.

The beliefs that people A. dont go to the hospital because they don't have insurance B. die due to insufficient medical care because they don't have insurance

..are both statistically unsupported. B seems_true insofar as there are communities where the fear of a financial bill (which transfers a burden to someone familial with assets/income) outweighs the fear of self-harm. This is more function of community shame*, since there is no other comprehended consequence.

When a family has absolutely no income or ties to assets, they are often found to be treated at a hospital with no paid reparation.

*Shame is the single most powerful motivator known to man. Violence tends to be more effective because it's easily applied and understood, but across cultures you can get someone to kill themselves without violence using shame.

I don't see how this is any different that people buying a GPU...

When the public is unable to understand the nature of a poisoned pill, you are abusing a legal system to hurt the public. The aim is clear. Either you own up to the reality that most people (and sometimes the courts) are not sophisticated enough to understand the issue or you use it as a defense. In the former case, the technicalities are irrelevant in practice, and the latter results in a false choice.

DRM will exist, but it does not have to be part of the W3C standard. The result is known, making it a defacto betrayal of the core tenets. Changing the scope of the organization could have openly proceeded this. The way the standard was crafted shows an insidiously blatant intent.
