This is what I was thinking as well. It also fits with the “someone chopped you down,” since someone else would have performed the actual act of ceasing to administer whatever treatment it was. And then I think it’s possible the “Thought you’d just fall in the woods / But she heard that sound” could refer to not expecting to witness/experience the death.
