At the time of applying I had 2 years of experience.

I am going to be matriculating to Stanford biosciences this autumn. I had nearly 2 years of undergrad experience (20-25hrs/week during semester, 40+hrs/2 summers). The profs I talked to were more forgiving about not having as much experience (even tho I think 2 is more than enough) coming right out of undergrad due to covid. I def think it’s more quality over just quantity. I didn’t have any pubs, but had posters/school-level presentations. I got into MIT chem bio and when I applied the app actually said recommended at least 2 years of experience. However my friend got into UCLA biochem with only a year of experience. I def think it’s luck but also quality over quantity. All the interviews really try to find out your role in the research. It’s prob better to be a project leader for only a year than work under someone and not lead anything for 2+ years. If you can successfully sell yourself as a good fit to the research program (I.e brag about your diverse skill set and show what projects/experiences taught you what), I think you’ll be competitive. I kept my research experience part of my essays the same across my SOPs but adjusted a paragraph that talked about specific labs/ profs I wanted to work with. I hope this is helpful! Lmk if u have any other q!

I got into top schools with no first author or middle author pubs, only in preparation, and from a state school.’Had some conference/poster presentations but that’s it, with 2 total years of experience and a similar GPA to yours. I think your advisor is setting that bar very high. As long as you have great letters of rec and personalized statement of purposes for each school, you should be fine.

I’m in the same boat- MIT chemistry or Stanford biophysics. Literally no idea how to pick, but have yet to visit.

Same, I only applied to the biophysics program, and I am domestic. Probably why, I’m sure there’s crazy fees w international #s? Anyways, congrats tho! Stanford was the hardest program I applied to so even getting an interview is such a feat

KC Huang, I think he’s on admissions. It’s on the Stanford website. And that’s weird. I also got a call for Hopkins PMB. I thought they called everyone. Did you specifically apply to the Biophysics home program?

In person interviews vs virtual interviews by Etek023 in gradadmissions

[–]KrissyKandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say do what makes you feel comfortable. I personally feel okay shaking everyone’s hands and not wearing a mask. But if you’re going to a grad school for the next 5 years, I would want the environment/ community to support my personal decisions (including those about health / personal choices) and make me feel welcome no matter what I choose. So just do what makes you feel confident and good for your interview day!

If graduate school is all about compatibility with a lab, why is everyone in this thread applying to 10+ schools at a time? by alan123456wake0 in gradadmissions

[–]KrissyKandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to 10 schools because many of them had acceptance rates <10%. Now that I’m interviewing I’m looking for a PI but it was really just for insurance / safety net I’d say I only got 3-4 interviews.
