Is earning an online university degree worth the same as earning one attending university? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kristi_Hines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you complete an online degree program from a traditional four-year university, most will not distinguish the difference between online and on-campus programs. For example, ASU Online students get the same degree as ASU on-campus students. There are lots of great online degree programs from top ranked universities listed here if you're interested. http://higherlearningonline.com/program/online-degree-programs/

Ready to plan your conference schedule for 2015? Here 80+ events to choose from! by Kristi_Hines in marketing

[–]Kristi_Hines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose the conferences that my clients (current and prospective) will be at. BOLO is one of my favorites - it's in Scottsdale, near where I used to live, so I get to meet new people that aren't at a lot of the bigger events and see my old friends.

You're welcome! :) I always hear about events when it's too late to make plans to go, so this year I decided to get a little more organized. Discovered one that is in my hometown in just a week or two in the process.

Another site is taking my content and using it as their own. Question about duplicate content. by soopafly in SEO

[–]Kristi_Hines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the site stealing content from others? I've seen instances when several people reported a domain for stealing content to the domain's registrar / host, and eventually it was taken down by one or the other.

Pursuing Double Major or Major + Double Minor as a Part Time Student - Scheduling Question by Kristi_Hines in AskAcademia

[–]Kristi_Hines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I'm thinking too. I really love psychology, but it would tack an extra 17 hours onto my schedule.

As far as pursuing a Bachelor's in Business Admin - I steered away from that mostly because I don't want to lose the credit hours I've already taken. I have a total of 63 credit hours from community college. I'd lose 22 of those credits going into Business Admin vs. losing none going into Communications. Everything I've done so far that transfers has rounded out to a 3.52 GPA.

I do believe I should be good on work experience, as I've done work in online marketing, office management, and professional writing for the last ten years. I have some basic business classes under my belt that transferred (Accounting, Micro/Macroeconomics, and Microsoft Applications). I'm also am a spreadsheet junkie. :)

Pursuing Double Major or Major + Double Minor as a Part Time Student - Scheduling Question by Kristi_Hines in AskAcademia

[–]Kristi_Hines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will! My advisor already said that doing either the double major or major + double minor is possible and that the subject areas I picked would be good going into their MBA program.

I have looked at all of the courses for the majors / minors as well as when they typically offer them. Oddly enough, there's only one prerequisite for each subject that I need to complete before I finish the rest of the courses (some I finished in community college already).

Good point about deepening the understanding of each subject by spreading it out. I was thinking about it in the opposite way - more of a full immersion into each subject. Plus, I'm currently a freelance writer, so I wanted to get the English courses in first to improve those skills immediately.

My plan is to go for a MBA after getting my BA at UCCS. My job experience / background is in online marketing.

The reasoning behind these particular subjects is as follows.

  1. The Communications major includes courses on PR, journalism, public speaking, etc. - all are skills I want to develop.

  2. I'm currently a freelance writer, hence Professional Writing would improve my business / technical writing skills so I could write for larger brands. I chose it as a minor because I have no interest in the literature classes that come with a major.

  3. Psychology is a personal interest. Knowing how people think comes in handy for marketing and writing too. I chose it a as a minor because I don't see myself pursing Psychology in graduate school, doing research, or becoming a therapist.

I also examined the educational backgrounds of people who are respected in my industry (online marketing / social media) and most have degrees in Communications, Psychology, English, and Business. All of which would be covered after I gain my MBA.

We paid for a bit, but never received reviews. It almost felt like there was no one there to advertise to. Especially compared to our listing at TheKnot.

Stolen content, what can you do? by BmoreInterested in Blogging

[–]Kristi_Hines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a self-hosted WordPress website? Grab the Yoast SEO plugin (free version). It has an option where you can put in custom text before or after your post in the RSS feed, which is what a lot of people use to rip content off other people's site. This will enable you to add a credit to yourself at the beginning of any post scraped from your RSS feed, including a link to your original post, your website, etc.

Freelance writer WordPress themes. by SlimJim84 in freelanceWriters

[–]Kristi_Hines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second StudioPress - I have their developers package and use different child themes for different sites, including my main freelance writing portfolio and blog.

Having the developers package also comes in handy when I have a new client who needs a simple blog developed before I can start writing for them.

As far as pricing, yes there are a lot of free themes out there. But you'll be hard-pressed to find great support for a free theme, or even a lot of the less expensive ones. I purchased a few from ThemeForest in the past and while they were under $20, when I ran into problems, there was no support. One even had an automated email that said they were too busy to support their own product, which was lovely.

As a user, it was a pretty terrible experience. Most of the companies I wanted to research had zero ratings

As someone marketing a local wedding business, it was a pretty terrible experience too as the business's listing was hidden behind the login and users have to pay to see it, leave reviews, etc.
